Beef prices keep going up, and there's no end in sight

Beef prices are at record highs, and industry experts tell Axios they could stay that way into 2026 and beyond.
Why it matters: Meat's high price tag is squeezing grocery budgets at the height of grilling season, and as President Trump's tariffs creep into the inflation data.
These prices "are just the tip of the iceberg," Patrick Montgomery, CEO and cofounder of Missouri-based KC Cattle Company, told Axios.
"Prices for beef will continue to be tumultuous for the next two to four years."
CPI shows rise in ground beef, steak prices
By the numbers: Ground beef averaged $6.12 a pound in June, up nearly 12% from a year ago, according to new federal data released Tuesday.
Steak prices jumped 8% year-over-year, per the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
It's the first time that ground beef has been above $6 since CPI data collection began in the 1980s, per the Joint Economic Committee's minority arm.
It's a heavy price pressure for the second-most consumed meat in the U.S., according to USDA data released Thursday.
The average American is expected to consume 59.1 pounds of beef in 2025 — compared with 102.5 pounds of chicken and 50.3 pounds of pork, per the data.
What's behind the high price of meat
The big picture: America's beef supply chain is being strained from multiple angles: climate, policy and economics. A multi-year drought shrunk cattle herds, and global imports are under threat — but consumer demand remains strong.
"We're dealing with lower supplies of beef, and that's what's really driving up our prices of beef right now," Courtney Schmidt, sector manager at Wells Fargo's Agri-Food Institute, tells Axios, noting that it is taking a long time for herds to recover from the 2021-2022 drought.
The number of farms in the U.S., including ranches, declined by 7% or 141,733 between 2017 and 2022, according to the latest USDA Census of Agriculture report, published in February 2024.
The American Farm Bureau Federation cites high production expenses and foreign competition as two reasons for the closings.
Zoom in: In May, the U.S. suspended live cattle imports from Mexico because of the New World Screwworm, a parasitic flesh-eating maggot.
Andrew Coppin, CEO and co-founder of Ranchbot, tells Axios the temporary banning of the import of Mexican cattle added to this price pressure.
"What we are experiencing as a country is a trifecta resulting in the perfect storm for record high beef prices," Montgomery told Axios.
Trump's new 50% Brazil tariff, more imported beef
Zoom out: With lower supplies in the U.S., Wells Fargo's Schmidt says there has been an increase in beef imports.
"Those higher imports of beef have not been enough to offset the lower supply that we're having in the U.S. but that is helping with some of our prices," Schmidt said, adding that imported beef is primarily coming from Australia, Brazil and some from New Zealand.
Yes, but: A new 50% U.S. tariff on Brazilian imports starting Aug. 1 could further disrupt global supply chains.
Brazil accounts for around 23% of all U.S. beef imports.
Brazilian meatpackers are reconsidering future beef shipments to the U.S. because of the tariff, Reuters reported Tuesday.
Walmart opens its first beef facility
The intrigue: Walmart, the world's largest retailer, opened its first-ever owned and case-ready beef facility in Olathe, Kansas, last month — part of a multiyear push to gain more control over the meat supply chain.
Beef from the new 300,000-square-foot facility will be sold at Walmart stores in the Midwest region as part of a commitment to American-made products, the company said.
Walmart hasn't disclosed what percentage of its total beef supply this facility will serve, but told Axios the Midwest region represents more than 600 stores across 14 stores.
The retailer said the new facility increases "needed capacity in the beef industry and allows Walmart greater control in offering high-quality items for its customers while keeping up with customer demand."

China just bet $2 billion on fusion energy. The US must respond.

China has just placed a major new national bet on commercializing fusion energy, and now is the time for the U.S. to respond. Chinese state and industrial leaders are positioning the country to lead the world in innovation. They're working to replicate the ecosystem of ideas and invention that has made the U.S. so special on the world's stage, touching billions of lives with core technologies like the automobile and the internet. Doing so supports China's own economic development and extends the country's long-term geopolitical influence, the exact same advantages the innovation ecosystem brought to the U.S. over the last century. The Chinese effort is forward-looking, placing bets on the technologies that will dominate the global economy for generations. That means funding both for basic research areas like life sciences, materials science, and quantum computing and for applied research in areas like semiconductors, electric vehicles, AI, batteries — and fusion, the last new energy source humanity will need. This week, China took a major new step down that path of progress with about $2.1 billion in new funding that positions Shanghai-based company China Fusion Energy Co. as the central state-controlled commercialization vehicle for fusion in China. China Fusion Energy Co. links expertise from major universities, industrial powers and state-owned energy companies — several of which are investors in the new company. Their aim — develop a Chinese fusion industry. As one Chinese press report put it, 'the national team has arrived.' This is a direct competitor to the company I co-founded and have been building for the last seven years. Like Commonwealth Fusion Systems, the Chinese effort aims to build a fusion device called a tokamak to generate electricity. Also like Commonwealth, this effort will use high-temperature superconductors, an approach that enables a more compact and therefore competitive power plant. It's highly validating that our technical approach is very promising, but it also shows that coordinated state action has now fully entered the race for fusion energy. From afar, it can be hard to understand exactly what China's blend of government and private efforts is doing. It's clear, though, they are organized and well resourced. Some of their fusion work is significant enough that you can see the facilities from space. Add China Fusion Energy Co. to the list of signals that China understands the importance of fusion and is moving aggressively to lead the race to develop it. 'This is a clear signal that Beijing is consolidating its fusion efforts into a full-scale, nationally coordinated industrial strategy,' concludes RAND analyst Jimmy Goodrich, who tracks Chinese science and innovation efforts closely. We've seen this movie before. China's manufacturing might, deep supply chains, workforce development and centrally driven development has let it dominate new industries like solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles. Many of these technologies were invented in the U.S. In contrast, the U.S. government isn't keeping up when it comes to fusion. A recent report by the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office found that only about 1 percent of Department of Energy-funded fusion efforts supported commercialization — through the department's modestly funded Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program. If the U.S. is to compete with other nations in the race to commercialize fusion, the federal government needs to radically improve its commitment to deploying fusion. We know other ways Congress and the administration could help fusion besides funding the Milestone program to match the ambition of China and other competitors. The Department of Energy Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee in 2020 published a new long-range plan — ' Powering the Future: Fusion and Plasmas ' — that details the research facilities that could help all fusion energy companies deploy power plants and scale more quickly. But it's China, not the U.S., that's building these research test stands and facilities the U.S. fusion industry needs to accelerate fusion's deployment and rapid scaling. Energy unlocks prosperity for people, businesses and nations. Whoever controls that energy commands an outsized impact on the world and on the future of everyone who lives on it. Right now Washington is focusing on American energy dominance, powering AI and improving energy security. It's clear what the government could do to cultivate that instead of its present course that fails to respond to Chinese energy dominance for fusion.

Trump to fire BLS commissioner after bad jobs report

President Trump on Friday said he directed his team to fire the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics following a dismal jobs report he blamed squarely on the Biden appointee. Trump said on Truth Social that the commissioner, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, had 'faked the Jobs Numbers' before the 2024 election in order to boost his then-political rival Kamala Harris. He cited revisions both during the Biden administration of labor statistics that at the time boosted job numbers ahead of the election. The jobs report released Friday showed a significant downturn during Trump's administration in May and June that showed the U.S. added 258,000 fewer jobs during those months. 'No one can be that wrong?' Trump said. 'We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can't be manipulated for political purposes.' McEntarfer was nominated by Biden in 2023 and confirmed by the Senate in 2024 as the 16th commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is part of the Department of Labor.
