Cubs to add Willi Castro to bench, taking advantage of Twins' sell-off: Sources
The Minnesota Twins on Thursday continued their sell-off, trading Castro to the Cubs, sources told The Athletic. The return is not yet known.

Castro is the fifth player traded by the Twins in the hours before the deadline and the seventh of the week. It's a fire sale that included the stunning deal sending Carlos Correa and cash to the Houston Astros for a prospect.
Since Monday's trade of Chris Paddack to Detroit, the Twins have also offloaded relievers Jhoan Duran (Philadelphia Phillies), Danny Coulombe (Texas Rangers) and Brock Stewart (Los Angeles Dodgers), and outfielder Harrison Bader (Philadelphia).
'Now no one wants to stay if they are selling like this,' one player said after news of Correa's trade back to Houston broke.
Castro, 28, has played six different positions while putting up above-average offensive numbers (103 OPS+) this season. He ranked No. 24 on The Athletic's Big Board of trade candidates and was one of the few everyday middle infielders who seemed readily available.
Castro provides the Cubs much-needed versatility on their bench. Given their remarkably healthy group of position players thus far, the Cubs haven't been forced to use that many backup plans. Without the August waiver period for trades, the Cubs wanted to get more coverage at multiple positions.
Though Matt Shaw has played well recently and proven himself as a plus defender, the third baseman has struggled offensively for most of his rookie season. Cubs manager Craig Counsell can also find matchups for Castro, a switch hitter.
Signed as minor-league depth in 2023, Castro revived his career with the Twins. He first made an impact with his speed and versatility, stealing 33 bases in 2023 while playing seven positions, including pitcher, for a division winner.
After winning over Twins manager Rocco Baldelli with his ability to play everywhere effectively, Castro became clutch. He earned a trip to the 2024 All-Star Game and was named the Twins' most valuable player, finishing with 31 doubles and 12 homers. Castro also made baseball history playing at least 25 games at five positions (second, shortstop, third, left and center). This season, he's played mostly second base and the outfield corners.

Typically better hitting left-handed, Castro made big strides this season to tighten up his right-handed swing and as a result is raking against southpaws with an OPS over 100 points better than his career average. Castro isn't stealing as much, but he's upbeat, will play anywhere and can add a spark — the kind of player the Twins would have loved to extend if not for the uncertainty of their ownership situation.
Instead, Castro became trade fodder three months before reaching free agency.

SafeSport Center to offer free training courses this week
DENVER (AP) — The U.S. Center for SafeSport is offering free training this week to 500 people as part of International Safe Sport Day, which takes place Friday. The center's 'SafeSport Trained" course is part of a series that teaches about recognizing factors that make athletes more vulnerable to abuse and knowing when and how to report abuse and misconduct. The Denver-based center was opened in 2017 to combat sex abuse in U.S. Olympic sports. It considers training among its core missions and receives a federal grant worth more than $2 million each year that helps support training and education on abuse prevention as well as the center's audit and compliance efforts with organizations that run Olympic sports in the U.S. The free courses are being offered to people outside the Olympic and Paralympic movement who would otherwise need to purchase the course. Registration is open this week on a first-come, first-served basis. ___ AP sports: The Associated Press

Jets' Mason Taylor and Tyrod Taylor miss practice with injuries
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor sat out practice Monday with an ankle injury and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor didn't participate with a knee ailment. Coach Aaron Glenn spoke to reporters before the session, and neither player's injury was mentioned. Glenn is expected to provide updates after practice Tuesday. Mason Taylor has been one of the Jets' standout performers during training camp, with the second-round draft pick out of LSU expected to play a major role in the offense with quarterback Justin Fields. Tyrod Taylor was on the field and in uniform throughout the session, but didn't take any snaps as Brady Cook and Adrian Martinez worked behind Fields during team drills. Glenn said wide receiver Xavier Gipson and cornerback/special teams ace Kris Boyd will be out this week after they both injured a shoulder during the Jets' scrimmage Saturday. Neither will play in New York's preseason opener at Green Bay on Saturday night. 'We will re-evaluate those guys going into next week,' Glenn said. Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf) and left guard John Simpson (back) will also sit out this week. Rookie safety Malachi Moore, who has been sidelined with an oblique issue, will be worked back into practice this week. It's unclear how Glenn will approach the preseason opener, as far as who might play, after he declined to provide details on his thinking. 'I will answer that question later on in the week,' Glenn said. Shaky Fields The Jets' passing offense has struggled in the past few practices, with Fields looking out of sync at times with his receivers. It hasn't all been on Fields, who dislocated a toe on his right foot early in camp. There have been drops, bad routes and mental errors. But it hasn't been smooth lately for Fields, who was unofficially 4 of 16 in team drills Monday. 'I think he's really improving, I really do,' Glenn insisted. 'I'm excited about that player. I'm excited about the things that he is going to be able to create for us. And every day, man, he's just got to continue to keep chopping wood. And the type of person that he is, he's going to continue to do that.' Second-year cornerback Qwant'ez Stiggers echoed his coach's sentiments — and took it a step further. 'He's very athletic, he's very fast," Stiggers said, 'and he's going to take us to the playoffs.' ___ AP NFL:
