Riquelme leaves Atletico Madrid for Real Betis

Atletico Madrid's Spanish winger Rodrigo Riquelme has signed a contract with Real Betis until 2030, the two clubs confirmed on Friday. "Atletico Madrid and Real Betis have reached an agreement for the transfer of Rodrigo Riquelme," Atletico wrote in a statement, without specifying the transfer fee for the 25-year-old Spanish international, who came through the club's youth system. Advertisement The two teams finalised the deal last week for a reported eight million euros ($9.4 million) for half the Spanish player's rights, with Atletico retaining the other half. Riquelme will replace 19-year-old Jesus Rodriguez, who joined Italian club Como this week for a reported 25 million euros ($29.4 million). Riquelme came through the youth ranks at Atletico and played for Bournemouth and Mirandes before exploding into prominence at Girona in the 2022-23 season. He earned two caps for Spain after making his debut in November 2023. In total, he made 85 appearances in La Liga, 13 in the Champions League, and 14 in the Copa del Rey. rsc/ea/lp

Liverpool cancel planned preseason testing after Diogo Jota's death; Salah, Henderson pay tribute

Liverpool cancelled preseason tests for a small number of first-team players on Friday following the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, with Mohamed Salah revealing his fears at returning to the club because 'Diogo won't be there' in a heartfelt tribute. A handful of players were due at Liverpool's Kirkby training base on Friday for testing after the summer break, but a staggered return will now begin from Monday to give the squad more time to process Thursday's news and say goodbye to their teammate. Advertisement A funeral for Jota and Silva are due to take place in Gondomar, on the outskirts of Porto, on Saturday. Jota and his younger brother, who was also a professional footballer, were killed in the early hours of Thursday morning when their car came off the road in the province of Zamora, in north west Spain. The pair had been en route to the port of Santander in northern Spain, where Jota intended to take a ferry back to the United Kingdom ahead of the start of preseason – having been advised by medics not to fly following a minor procedure. Arne Slot, the Liverpool head coach, described the 'state of shock' at the club as 'absolute' in a statement on Thursday, and a number of Jota's teammates have said they are struggling to find the words to express their grief in tributes to the Portugal international, who was 28. Salah, Liverpool's star forward, said the news had left him 'frightened' to return to the club for preseason, knowing Jota would not be there. 'I am truly lost for words,' the Egyptian posted on Instagram on Friday. 'Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. 'Team mates come and go but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back. 'My thoughts are with his wife, his children and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.' Liverpool have opened physical and digital books of condolence for supporters to sign, and thousands of fans have paid their respects to the pair with tributes outside Anfield and Molineux, the home of Jota's former club Wolverhampton Wanderers. Among those to visit Anfield on Friday was former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who played alongside Jota for three seasons until 2023 and is now with Dutch club Ajax. Advertisement A visibly-tearful Henderson laid a wreath of flowers with a note reading: 'Rest in peace my friend, along with your brother Andre. We will all miss you. Love Hendo and family'. Meanwhile, dignitaries including the Portuguese prime minister Luis Montenegro were among the mourners at the Sao Cosme Chapel in Gondomar on Friday afternoon for a private wake. A funeral is due to take place on Saturday, with a number of Liverpool players and staff expected to be in attendance. The bodies of the two men were returned to Portugal from Spain on Thursday evening. (Top photo of former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson paying his respects at Anfield:)

The lowdown on UEFA Women's EURO 2025 Day 3️⃣

The 2025 Women's EURO action is ramping up following goals and drama on day two. Here are our day two headlines and the day three stories to have an eye on ... Before we get into today's action, what happened yesterday? ⏪ Italy briefly went to the top of Group B after securing a deserved 1-0 victory over Belgium. The Azzure were the better side throughout and a stunning, curling finish from Arianna Caruso just before half time proved to be a worthy matchwinner. Advertisement It was a more one-sided affair in the later Group B kick-off as Spain made a big statement as pre-tournament favourites by thrashing Portugal 5-0. The world champions ended a run of eight games without a clean sheet with their triumph and notched their biggest EUROs win to date. Who is playing today? 👀 Group C begins with Denmark vs Sweden and some star players are set to feature, including Pernille Harder and Stina Blackstenius. Sweden are one of the biggest European teams historically and head to Switzerland in terrific form, having not lost a game since July 2024. Germany take on EURO debutants Poland in the second Group C encounter. Christian Wück's side are among the favourites at EURO 2025 after reaching the final in 2022, eventually losing 2-1 against England after extra-time. Poland will make their maiden appearance at the tournament and all eyes will be on Barcelona sharpshooter Ewa Pajor. Advertisement Player to watch 🔍 📸 RONNY HARTMANN - AFP or licensors It's finally time for a wider audience to see and appreciate the talent of Germany forward Selina Cerci. Bundesliga top scorer, goal every 97 minutes despite playing for a Hoffenheim side who only managed to finish sixth. Five goals in seven appearances for Germany since this time last year. Cerci emerged as a potential future superstar as a teenager and was prolific at 21 but injuries set her back - she made just nine league starts in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons - so, now aged 25, this is finally her first international tournament. Advertisement She may not start but she will be looking to make an impact no matter what role she plays. Key storyline 🔑 📸 Charles McQuillan - 2025 Getty Images There will be plenty of intrigue around Poland's major tournament debut. The Eagles had a qualification campaign of two halves, losing all six games in the qualifying group stages before winning four play-off matches. That improved form in the play-offs kick-started a huge upturn in form as Poland are unbeaten in 11 consecutive matches, winning 10. However, taking on European giants Germany will be a major test for Nina Patalon's outfit in Group C. Advertisement Key to the Eagles' hopes at the Women's EUROs will be Ewa Pajor. The Barcelona striker scored an incredible 25 LaLiga goals in just 22 starts last season and has four goals in her last four internationals. Must-watch video 🎥 Fun facts 📊 Spain vs Portugal's attendance of 29,520 was a record for a Women's EURO group stage game not involving the host nation. Since making their EURO debut in 1989, Germany have qualified for 12 successive finals and won a record eight titles.
