Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo named hardest players they've ever faced
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have come up against some of the best defenders in the world but there are two players who stand out as the most difficult they've faced Football legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have spoken out about the toughest players they've had to face off against during their illustrious 20-year careers. These titans of the pitch have encountered their fair share of formidable opponents as they graced top-flight football. Messi, now dazzling for Inter Miami, singled out a somewhat unexpected name tied to his spell in Barcelona – that of RCD Mallorca's right-back Pablo Maffeo. The Spanish player, who briefly featured for Manchester City before moving on loan to Girona, left a lasting impression on Messi when they squared off in 2017. In his first season in the prime league at just 20, Maffeo's robust marking of Messi during the match was notable even though he couldn't prevent the Catalan club from securing a 3-0 triumph. Three years down the line, Messi honoured Maffeo with high praise in an interview with DAZN, the Express reports. "Pablo Maffeo, when he was at Girona, was the hardest defender I've ever faced," conceded Messi in a 2020 conversation. "I've never been one to complain. I believe that physical contact is part of football." For Maffeo, 27, to earn such accolades from an icon like Messi was extraordinary. Reflecting on Messi's words, he shared with The Athletic: "It's the best recognition from the best player in history. We lost that game, but the experience will always mark my life." Reflecting on his days as a dazzling right-winger before shining on the left at Real Madrid and transforming into a striker, Portugal skipper Ronaldo, 40, has faced a host of challenging opponents in his illustrious career. Choosing his most formidable rival wasn't easy, but it was during his tenure with Manchester United that Ronaldo reminisced about one player he found particularly tough - Ashley Cole. Despite clashing 14 times and the Red Devils legend besting Cole in eight encounters, it was the gritty showdowns he remembered. Speaking to Coach Mag in 2016, Ronaldo confessed: "Over the years I had some great battles with Ashley Cole. He does not give you a second to breathe. He was such a tenacious player when he was at his peak, quick, tough in the tackle. You knew it would never be an easy game." Cole, who squared off against Ronaldo while with Arsenal and Chelsea, held mutual respect for the Al-Nassr striker's all-round prowess and relentless drive to succeed. "He was willing to learn and adapt," said the former England left-back. "He wanted to be the best player in the world and became a machine. He had everything. He could dribble, he could sprint behind, he could leap and jump and head a ball, he could go inside, he could go outside. "So I say he always gave me nightmares, but you try to work each other out and we got the best of each other at times. Whenever I hear his name or see his face, I always think of when he made me do the splits!" Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Kylian Mbappe closing in on golden boot after opening gap to Robert Lewandowski
Real Madrid have little to play for in the final two games of the season, but there is little doubt that Kylian Mbappe will play the full 180 minutes in both of those games if he is fit. The Frenchman is in hot pursuit of both the Golden Boot and the Pichichi in his first season in the Spanish capital. After grabbing the equaliser against RCD Mallorca on Wednesday night, Mbappe hit 40 goals for Los Blancos, cementing his as the best ever first season for a forward in the history of Real Madrid. Having started El Clasico behind Robert Lewandowski in the Pichichi race, he is also a hot favourite to win the award for Spain's top scorer in La Liga. One goal away from top spot in Golden Boot race As highlighted by Marca, Mbappe is just one goal away from taking the lead in the Golden Boot race. Although he is ten goals behind Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting CP, due to the weighting, a single goal would take him into the lead. His 28 league goals is the most of anyone in the 'top five European leagues', alongside Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, who is also firmly in the running for the award. Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski and Bayern Munich's Harry Kane face an uphill task to catch those in front of them. Kane and Gyokeres have just one game left to add to their tallies, and if there is something in Lewandowski's favour, it is that he has three games, the most of anyone, to make up the gap, while Salah and Mbappe have just two remaining. El Clasico key in Pichichi race Mbappe started El Clasico a goal behind Lewandowski, but with the Polish striker not getting off the bench, and Mbappe scoring a hat-trick, it moved him firmly into pole position for the closing stages. Lewandowski's injury absence in recent weeks has cost him dearly in that regard. Lewandowski has fixtures against Espanyol, Villarreal and Athletic Club to mount a comeback, while Real Madrid face Sevilla and Real Sociedad.

Ancelotti praises youngsters as injury-hit Real beat Mallorca
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti shakes hands with RCD Mallorca's Toni Lato REUTERS/Susana Vera (Reuters) - Manager Carlo Ancelotti heaped praise on his young players who helped a depleted Real Madrid fight back to beat Mallorca 2-1 thanks to academy centre back Jacobo Ramon's dramatic winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time. The win delayed Barcelona's title celebrations and kept Real's slim hopes alive but, while they have two games remaining, they are four points behind leaders Barca, who have a game in hand and will claim their 28th LaLiga title on Thursday if they beat city rivals Espanyol. "We didn't give up despite having 12 players injured, something that is very rare," Ancelotti told a press conference. "The match was won thanks to a good attitude from the team and the players who came in and delivered a good performance. I've never seen a team shoot 40 times at goal like we did today. "We have covered so many absentees with an extraordinary effort by all the players who did step foot on the pitch today. If we had done it in more games with this same attitude throughout the season, it would have been a better campaign." Ancelotti confirmed on Monday that he would be leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season to take over the vacant Brazil national team job. The Italian, however, said his focus would be in the Spanish capital until May 26, when he travels to Rio de Janeiro to start his new role with the five-time World Cup champions. "Whenever I've sat on the Real Madrid bench at the Santiago Bernabeu it's always been special for me," Ancelotti said. "I leave with the peace of mind and the serenity of having done what I have been able to do, that my team tries to win until the last minute, as we did today. "We believe in doing our thing, in winning what's left and see what happens. They have to lose, but anything can happen. We will fight."
