Qatar's YoC initiative extends Qatar-Indonesia cultural ties through Ceramic Residency

Qatar's Years of Culture initiative is set to build on the legacy of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture (YoC) with the launch of a new Ceramic Residency Project, welcoming renowned Indonesian ceramic artist Francisca 'Kika' to Doha this August.
Hosted in collaboration with Liwan Design Studios and Labs, the residency continues to promote cultural exchange and creative dialogue between Qatar and Indonesia, featuring the shared values of craftsmanship, community and artistic innovation. Running from August 4 to September 7, 2025, the programme will see Kika working side by side with local artists and craftspeople to develop a series of collaborative ceramic works inspired by the craft legacies of both Qatar and Indonesia.
Francisca, widely known as Kika, is an Indonesian ceramicist recognised for blending contemporary forms with a strong sense of community. She previously led the popular Indonesian Workshop Month in Qatar during the 2023 Year of Culture, where she invited participants to sculpt their own creations and discover new ceramic-making techniques. Her interactive, inclusive approach demystifies traditional craft and welcomes the public to connect with clay as a medium for storytelling and cultural exchange.
A core part of this new project is public engagement, with weekly Pottery Fun Classes welcoming community members to learn directly from Kika every Friday — on August 8, 15, 22, 29 and September 5. Participants will explore hand-building and pottery wheel techniques while contributing to the creation of works that celebrate the cultural connections at the heart of this residency.
The Ceramic Residency embodies the spirit of friendship and artistic dialogue that the Years of Culture programme champions. By bringing communities together through craft and collaboration, the project reinforces the enduring legacy of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture and its commitment to building connections that extend far beyond a single year. Renowned Qatar-based writer Asif Shafi publishes second edition of his bilingual poetry collection
Well known and acclaimed Qatar-based poet Asif Shafi has released the second edition of his bilingual poetry collection Strangers for Centuries (Sadiyun Se Ajnabi) featuring verses in both English and Urdu. The 144-page collection, featuring 63 selected poems and ghazals by Asif, has been published by Zarbaft Publications, Lahore. First published in 2011, the book has been translated into English by noted writer Salim Ahmad Siddiqi. Asif has dedicated the book to his beloved wife, Ainy Asif. 'In the second edition, we have exclusively included remarks from renowned scholars and writers such as Professor So Yamane of Osaka University, Japan; Dr Ali Bayat, Associate Professor in the Department of Urdu Language and Literature, University of Tehran, Iran; Prof Dr Anwar Rizwi, former Chairperson of the Department of Persian, Aligarh Muslim University, India; and Dr Nazia Jaffo Khan. The rest of the content remains unchanged,' remarked Asif who hails from Dharanawala city in District Bahawalnagar in Pakistan. Asif is celebrated as a distinctive and sensitive poet, renowned for his evocative exploration of love, separation, reflection, and emotion. This collection transcends mere translation—it stands as a profound literary endeavor to convey the delicate essence of love to a global audience. Over a creative journey spanning three decades, Asifhas consistently placed love and the spectrum of human emotions at the heart of his poetic expression. Reimagining these themes in a contemporary context, his work reflects a delicate aesthetic, emotional authenticity, and intellectual depth—qualities that collectively offer a renewed dimension to the landscape of Urdu poetry. Asif is a professional planning engineer who graduated from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, in 1997. He began his career at Petrochemical Industries in Faisalabad, where he served for over eight years. Prior to relocating to Qatar, he gained valuable experience working in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Asif, who published his first collection of critical essays at the age of 24, regards engineering as his profession but holds poetry close as his true passion. His first poetry book Zara Jo Tum Thahar Jatay comprising ghazals and nazms was published in 1998. His other publications include Teray Humrah Chalna Hai; Koi Phool Dil Main Khila Nahi; Juda Hona Hee Parta Hai; Piyar Sazawan; and Kabhi Waqt Milay Tu Aa Jao. Asif's ghazals have been sung by famous Bollywood singers like Penaz Masani, Vaishali Samant, Pooja Gaitonde and Rafique Sheikh. The album of his ghazals has been named after his book 'Kabhi Waqt Milay Tu Aa Jao' and recorded at Buzz In Recording Studio, Vile Parle East, Mumbai, India. Pakistan's Urdu magazine Zarbaft dedicated a 212-page special edition to the literary achievements of Asif in2018. The special edition of the magazine was published by Faiz Academy, Narowal, Pakistan comprising Asif's selected work and articles written by men of letters on Asif. Asif Shafi's literary contributions have inspired academic research, with MPhil theses written by Azam Jamshed of Minhaj University, Lahore; Mohammad Ahmed Shakir from the Urdu Department at Sargodha University; and Fauzia Rasheed of Government College University, Faisalabad.

Tasweer Photo Fest issues Open Call for 2025 awards

This latest edition of the biannual initiative continues to celebrate and support photographers aged 18 and above residing in Western Asia and North Africa (WANA). The programme offers funding, visibility and professional development opportunities through two distinct award categories. 'With the launch of the 2025 Tasweer Awards, we reaffirm our mission to nurture and support the region's image-makers at every stage of their careers,' said Khalifa Al Obaidly, director of Tasweer. 'These awards not only provide financial and curatorial support but also serve as a powerful platform for sharing personal and collective narratives through photography. Tasweer remains deeply committed to fostering a thriving visual arts community in the WANA region, grounded in collaboration and creative expression.' Participants will have the opportunity to connect with the broader artistic community and gain international recognition, contributing to the growth of photography and visual culture throughout the WANA region. The Tasweer Single Image Award is open to photographers of all levels and invites submissions of a single photograph that conveys a personal experience or narrative. Selected photographers will receive a cash prize of QR2,000 and will have their work featured in Tasweer exhibitions, along with additional visibility through online and public programming. The Tasweer Project Award offers a QR30,000 grant to support the initiation, development, or completion of a photographic project. Poet Sameeha unveils cover of her 3rd book‘Shielding Sunflower'
Tribune News Network Doha The Skills Development Centre came alive with literary fervour on Friday evening as Doha-based young poet Sameeha Junaid unveiled the cover of her much-anticipated third poetry collection, Shielding Sunflower. The event was graced by several eminent personalities from Qatar's Indian community, making it a memorable evening of cultural and literary celebration. The cover page of the book was officially released by Dr. Amanulla Vadakkengara amid loud applause and admiration from the gathering. The event also witnessed the presence and addresses of distinguished guests, including P N Babu Rajan, chairman, advisory council, Indian Cultural Centre (ICC); K S Prasad, advisory council chairman, ICBF; Satyendra Pathak, senior journalist, Qatar Tribune; Avinash Gaikwad, president, Outreach Qatar; Hussain, general secretary, Qatar Indian Authors Forum; K Krishnakumar, former general secretary, ICC; Sandeep Reddy, MC member, ICC; and Anwar, CEO, Radio Malayalam, along with several other community leaders. Sameeha Junaid got her first book published at the remarkably young age of 19, making her one of the youngest poets in the region to break into the publishing world. Her journey as a writer has been deeply personal. The passing away of her father left a profound impact on her life, and it was in poetry that she found her solace, strength, and voice. Since then, she has continued to serve society through her writings, using poetry as a means to heal, inspire, and encourage self-reflection among readers. Her debut book, One World, One Life, One You, BE YOU (2020), published by ePublica, was a collection of 50 poems that reflected her youthful yet profound perspective on life, individuality, and self-expression. Her second book, Inner Voice, The Unheard Noise (2022), also published by ePublica, further cemented her position as a poet of depth and sensitivity. It comprised 105 poems and nine thought-provoking articles, delving into themes of introspection, resilience, and the human experience. The newly unveiled third book, Shielding Sunflower (2025), published by Open Read, contains 50 poems, many of which are drawn directly from her personal diary, Journal of a Stalwart. The collection promises readers a glimpse into her innermost reflections, blending vulnerability with strength. The cover design for the book was beautifully conceptualized and created by Vasila Jahan. In her remarks at the event, Sameeha expressed that poetry for her has always been a medium of healing, inspiring, and connecting with people. 'My words come from a place of emotion and lived experiences. Shielding Sunflower is special because it carries pieces of my own journal, which makes it deeply personal,' she said. Speakers at the event lauded Sameeha's contribution to literature as a young voice emerging from Qatar's vibrant cultural landscape. They highlighted her ability to blend simplicity with depth, making her works relatable yet profound. The evening not only celebrated the unveiling of a book cover but also stood as a testament to the nurturing of young literary talent in the Indian expatriate community in Qatar. With three impactful books to her credit — 'One World, One Life, One You, BE YOU', 'Inner Voice, The Unheard Noise' and now 'Shielding Sunflower', Sameeha Junaid continues to shine as a promising literary voice whose works bridge inspiration, reflection, and healing.
