Sioux City Career Academy builds second home in two years
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – Students with the Sioux City Career Academy have nearly finished another house and will be offering it to the community very soon.
The nearly 1,500-square foot house is a three-bedroom, two-bath space, with additional room for a basement if the homeowners wish to add one. This is the second home the Career Academy has built for Siouxlanders to purchase — the first was sold in July 2024 to a couple whose previous home was destroyed by flooding.

This year's home was built by 18 seniors and 26 juniors and began undergoing construction last September. Sioux City Career Academy President Eric Kilburn says projects like this house will bring great pride to their students for years to come.
'One of the things that one of our instructors said, and I felt this too, is if you've ever built something, it stays there and lasts,' Kilburn said. 'Like, I helped build a very tiny little thing at a church we used to attend, and we drive by that, and I still have some pride in building that. Imagine being a junior in high school or a senior in high school, and then a couple of years later, you drive by a house and you can tell your family, your wife, your kids, 'that was me, I built that.''
If you're interested in bidding on the student-made house, the last day to do so is May 9.

Big Brother Big Sisters of Siouxland appoints new executive director
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland will soon have a new executive director. Ciarra Prather will be taking over as executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland (BBBS), as Kristie Arlt will be relocating to Omaha. Prather brings a background in sales, leadership, marketing, public relations, strategic communication, and community engagement into her new role. Some of this experience was fostered here at KCAU 9. 'Originally from Utah and raised in Iowa, I've always felt connected to the values of hard work, integrity, and community,' said Prather. 'I'm honored to lead Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland and look forward to building on the strong foundation Kristie has created.' Part of roof collapses during fire at Dakota City boat dealer
DAKOTA CITY, Neb. (KCAU) — On Friday morning, local fire crews responded to a fire in Dakota City, Nebraska. Around 5 a.m. Friday morning, Dakota City Fire Department personnel were called to a fire at 1909 Broadway Street in Dakota City, which is a local boat dealer business known as Cimmarina Boats. Crews found the roof of a building on fire when they arrived, and a section of the roof collapsed while they were at the scene. South Sioux City and Homer fire crews also responded to assist in firefighting efforts. No one was reported inside the building during the fire. Further investigation will determine if the building needs to be red-tagged or if it's safe to re-enter. Power to the facility is cut off at this time, and the cause of the fire is unknown.
