CBS Sports analyst Rick Neuheisel names Jackson Arnold his top newcomer

USA Today5 hours ago
The key to the success for the Auburn Tigers this season on the football field will be the play of quarterback Jackson Arnold. He is looking to rebound from a subpar performance last season with the Oklahoma Sooners where he was benched for some games early in the season. As a freshman in 2024, Arnold threw for 1,421 yards and 12 touchdowns with a completion percentage of 63%. He did not meet the expectations that were placed on him before the season.
The struggles were not just with Arnold last season. The Sooners had issues at the offensive line, and Arnold was without his top receivers. Neither should be an issue with the Tigers this season. Arnold will have one of the best groups of receivers, not just in the SEC but in the entire nation. Sophomore Cam Coleman and Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton Jr lead the wide receiver room.
CBS Sports analyst and former college football head coach Rick Neuheisel sees Arnold as his top newcomer this season. Part of his reasoning is that head coach Hugh Freeze needs Arnold to be successful. 'I think Jackon Arnold is going to have one heck of an impact on war eagle nation', said Neuheisel.
If he does have a big impact on the team, that will be good news for Freeze. His first two years as head coach have not been what the fans have expected, with an 11-14 record so far. A big year from Arnold, the offense should result in Freeze staying off any hot seat.

Iowa football has QB that understands what 'it takes to win'

After acquiring the talents of quarterback Mark Gronowski through the offseason transfer portal from South Dakota State, Iowa football offensive coordinator Tim Lester praised the incoming senior signal-caller entering the 2025 campaign. At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, the Naperville, Ill. native, led South Dakota State for the last four seasons to a pair of FCS national championships in 2022 and 2023, while passing for a total of 10,308 yards and 93 touchdowns and rushing for 1,767 career rushing yards and 37 touchdowns. He would end up closing his tenure with the Jackrabbits tied for the title of the winningest quarterback in FCS history with a 49-6 record. With Gronowski now donning a Hawkeyes uniform, Lester hailed the quarterback's ability to find ways to uplift the team to victory, whether it's through his own plays or creating opportunities for teammates. "The biggest thing is that he just understands the things that it takes to win. The saying he always uses is, 'Have a positive football play.' He realizes that negative football plays change games, and he does an unbelievable job of taking the bad plays and turning them into less bad plays," Lester said. Lester also highlighted Gronowski's upbeat attitude as an indicator of his championship-level pedigree. "The other thing is, he is a super positive person. He is always upbeat. He's had mostly good practices, but he's had a couple missed throws or the first time running something where he missed something, but he just never gets down. He's very steady Eddy. It's very evident why he's won as much as he's won as you watch him go through the good and the bad, and how it never affects his mindset," Lester said. Given that the Big Ten possesses some of the most passionate fan bases in the nation, maintaining composure throughout the game is pivotal to the goal of earning a victory, especially on the road. While objectively, Gronowski's "on paper" quarterback skills and achievements are heralded as one of the best in the Kirk Ferentz era, there is still some skepticism amongst fans who have been led astray in years past by players who did not meet their expectations. While it is fair to hold those concerns, the true test for Gronowski will be how he performs against live competition outside the program, which Lester believes will finally kickstart the Hawkeyes' dominance fans have craved for years. Iowa opens its 2025 season on Aug. 30 against Albany from Kinnick Stadium with kickoff set for 5 p.m. CT and the game broadcast on FS1. Florida football's Jake Slaughter named to CBS Sports Preseason All-America team

Florida football redshirt senior center Jake Slaughter was named to CBS Sports' Preseason All-American first team, making him the lone Gator on the prestigious list released Wednesday. Slaughter, an Ocala native, is coming off a dominant 2024 season in which he started all 13 games, logged a team-high 728 snaps and earned first-team AP All-American honors. At 6-foot-5-inches and 303 pounds, Slaughter has been a steady force in the middle of Florida's offensive line. His leadership is just as valuable as his physical play, with teammates voting him a team captain heading into 2025. Anchoring the line in front of quarterback DJ Lagway will be crucial for a Florida team looking to reach the postseason. With one of the most challenging schedules in the country, having an experienced leader like Slaughter calling protections could be the difference in close matchups. CBS Sports noted that the SEC led all conferences with 11 selections on the preseason team, underscoring the week-to-week challenge the Gators face. Slaughter joins an elite group of players from across the league, reinforcing his status among the best at his position in college football. Here is everything CBS Sports' John Talty wrote about the Florida football center. What CBS Sports said about Slaughter "Slaughter had a terrific 2024 season for the Gators, logging a team-high 728 snaps in 13 starts and earning first-team Associated Press All-American honors. The 6-foot-5, 303-pound redshirt senior was the only center last season to earn 80-plus grades as both a pass and run blocker, according to Pro Football Focus. "He's big, strong, moves well for his size, doesn't get easily caught off guard and has earned consistent praise from his teammates for his hard work, which included voting him as team captain. He's the anchor of a unit charged with protecting star quarterback DJ Lagway, a paramount task if the Gators are going to match their lofty preseason expectations." Which Oklahoma Sooners player made CBS Sports' preseason All-America team?

The Oklahoma Sooners are entering a pivotal season for the program in 2025. After a 6-7 record in 2024, many are doubting what OU can do this year, after seeing what things looked like in the first season in the SEC. Others believe that the Sooners can bounce back in a big way this season, due to all of the changes that have been made in Norman since last November. On the player acquisition side, one of the biggest additions to the roster came in the form of former Cal running back Jaydn Ott. Oklahoma picked him up in the spring transfer portal window. Aside from the move to go get quarterback John Mateer to run the offense, the signing of Ott is probably the biggest offseason player acquisition OU made for the upcoming season. Ott was the first big name that new general manager Jim Nagy added to the fold, and Sooner Nation hopes the senior will be able to help jumpstart the offense from the backfield this fall. CBS Sports believes he has the capability to do just that. CBS Sports included Jaydn Ott on their preseason All-America team, which they released on Wednesday. Ott was the only Sooner to make the team, serving as the second-team running back behind Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love. Penn State's Nicholas Singleton was CBS Sports' other first-team RB, with Louisville's Issac Brown behind him on the second team. While he was at Cal, Ott broke onto the scene with a big season in 2023, showcasing his speed and dynamic playmaking ability. He was injured for a good part of last season, but the Sooners are hoping his breakaway, game-changing tendencies return to pre-injury levels. If Oklahoma can consistently get big-time plays from Ott at the running back position, it'll open up so many other things for this offense and take the pressure off of so many other parts of this team, including the defense and the special teams. Ott is healthy and ready to roll heading into the fall, and OU might have a really special back toting the rock in 2025.
