In preparation for the upcoming festival of Bakari Eid, Pune Police organised a coordination meeting with maulanas and religious leaders in the Zone 5 area of Pune city to ensure peaceful and lawful celebrations.
The meeting, held at the Zone 5 office in Wanowrie on Saturday, focused on various guidelines and regulations to be followed during the festival. DCP Zone 5 Rajkumar Shinde, senior police officials from Hadapsar, Wanowrie, and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officers were present during the meeting.
Police addressed key concerns such as the conduct of animal sacrifice, the use of loudspeakers at mosques, the prevention of illegal animal trading, and the operation of unauthorized slaughterhouses.
Police officials emphasised the importance of adhering to civic norms and maintaining communal harmony.
'We want the celebrations to be conducted with respect to the law and public sentiment. Our goal is to ensure that the festival is observed peacefully and in a spirit of unity,' said Shinde, who addressed the meeting.
Maulanas and community leaders assured the police of their cooperation and committed to spreading awareness among community members about the guidelines. In addition to animal sacrifice protocols, the police urged the religious leaders to ensure that loudspeaker use complies with time restrictions and volume limits as per Supreme Court directives.
The meeting concluded with an appeal for inter-community respect and cooperation to make Bakari Eid celebrations smooth and joyous for all.

PMC urges forest dept to drop charges against Katraj zoo director, return animals

Pune: The civic body has urged the forest department to drop all charges against the director of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Museum for alleged mismanagement of wild animals in the Wild Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WARRC), also seeking return of all animals the department took away during investigations. In Sept 2023, the forest department had registered an offence against the zoo director after receiving a complaint from honorary wildlife warden Aditya Paranjape regarding irregularities at WARRC. The department carried out three investigations as ordered by DCF Tushar Chavan. Investigations covered allegations such as the release and relocation of 612 wild animals — including birds, mammals and reptiles — outside their natural habitats; the mistreatment of Schedule I and II species, including snakes and chausingha, and the failure to maintain records or data for 328 animals that reportedly died at the centre. The department registered an offence under sections 2 (16-G), 9, 39 and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) was also told to carry out an investigation into the matter and submit a report to the Maharashtra Zoo Authority (MZA). MZA conducted an inspection at the site after a leopard escaped from the WARRC for 40 hours in 2024. According to PMC's letter addressed to the forest department, the Indian Herpetological Society (IHS), responsible for WARRC, was to be held accountable for the events — including maintenance of accurate records, taking care of animals, administering medication on time and releasing animals into the wild while informing the department about the same. "Even though PMC has sought that the charges be dropped, I think people responsible for the mismanagement should be held accountable. The department and corporation must find the person accountable in place of the director and pursue the case," said Paranjape. After the turn of events in 2023, PMC permanently closed WARRC and terminated the contract with IHS. Alongside this, the CZA granted permission to the zoo to permanently keep the animals from the rescue centre on Dec 8, 2023, said PMC. "The errors observed in the work related to the wildlife orphanage are not intentional, but show deficiencies in daily working. Since the zoo director or any PMC official is not responsible in this regard, the Forest Offence First Report No. WL 1/2023, dated Sept 14, 2023, filed on their behalf under the Wildlife Protection Act (1972) should be cancelled. Also, since the approval of the CZA has been obtained, the animals taken from the zoo should be sent back," said PMC in its letter on May 30. The forest department is yet to file a chargesheet against IHS for mismanagement. "We have received the letter and will wait for PMC's report to the MZA. Even though we registered an offence, no chargesheet was filed. Hence, the MZA would take the next call on the subject. We have submitted our report to them," said deputy conservator of forests Mahadev Mohite.

This was the second time, after Sierra Leone, that a country offered its condolences to the all-party delegation led by Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde. On their final day of the four-nation tour, the team was warmly received in Liberia. Shinde's team met Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr, foreign minister Sarah Beysolow Nyanti and other leaders as well as officials. Uddhav Thackerays Saamana Slams Shinde Faction Minister, Demands Dismissal For Marathi Insult

The Shiv Sena(UBT) in a scathing attack against the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena following its Minister Pratap Sarnaik's statement that Hindi has become a dialect or a spoken language in Mumbai, said on Monday that this is "humiliation" to the Marathi language and the minister should be dismissed. Minister Pratap Sarnaik, while addressing an event organised on the occasion of Hindi Patrakarita Diwas in Mumbai on Saturday, said, 'Hindi has become the language of speaking in Mumbai'. He also said that Marathi is his mother tongue, while Hindi is 'ladki bahin' (beloved sister), who helped secure 237 seats in the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha. The statement has been criticised by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT). In its hard-hitting editorial in the party mouthpiece 'Saamana', the Thackeray group claimed the Shinde faction, which considers itself the heirs of Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray, has become the pawns of the BJP. 'The BJP people do not leave a single opportunity to weaken Maharashtra, humiliate the Marathi language and the Marathi people. Therefore, the Shinde camp, a dependent of the BJP, is also repeating the BJP's anti-Marathi stance.' 'The ministers concerned should be dismissed for insulting the Marathi language and Maharashtra like this. Did 107 martyrs sacrifice their lives in the Samyukta Maharashtra struggle just to hear that Mumbai's language is not Marathi? But Mumbai and Maharashtra are currently ruled by traders and builders, and our Marathi language is being crushed under their bulldozers," said the editorial. 'When I come to Mira-Bhayander areas, Hindi automatically comes out of my mouth. Because the language of this area is Hindi, and you all vote for me," said the minister of the Marathi state. Does this Marathi fit into the official language policy? The official language of Maharashtra is Marathi, and now Marathi has been made mandatory in the central establishments in Maharashtra as well. This is not a policy for Maharashtra only. Those living in Bengal will have to learn Bengali, those living in Gujarat will have to learn Gujarati, and those living in the North will have to learn Hindi and deal with that language in that state. Being proud of our mother tongue or official language does not mean that we hate other language sisters. As soon as Pratap Sarnaik showered love on Hindi, BJP President Bawankule came to his aid. "Don't forget that we have given Marathi the status of a classical language," he said. Have your ministers been given the licence to insult Marathi by giving this status?" asked the Thackeray camp. "Have you been given permission to accommodate foreigners under the Marathi umbrella? Answer this first. Maharashtra has a population of 11.5 crore, and about nine crore of them speak Marathi. They do business in Marathi. Don't the ministers of the Shinde group know that there is a law that says that Marathi is the only official language of the state of Maharashtra, and everyone living here must know Marathi?" asked the editorial. "Marathi language is the language of Chhatrapati Shivaji, Veer Savarkar, Lokmanya Tilak and the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray," said the editorial. A few days ago, a leader of the RSS leader Bhaiyaji Joshi, visited Ghatkopar and mutually declared that the language of Ghatkopar is Gujarati. "When there was an uproar in Mumbai over this, Joshi clarified. Sarnaik and his leaders did not even show that much courtesy," claimed the editorial. "Shiv Sena was formed so that the Marathi people of Mumbai can live with dignity, and the Marathi language remains respected. Shiv Sena has been fighting many Marathi battles for 50 years. The Shinde faction has been working to tarnish Balasaheb Thackeray's struggle for the growth of the Marathi language, which is the language of the farmers of Maharashtra, the working people of Mumbai and the mill workers,' said the editorial. "Someone should tell all these BJP supporters that Marathi pride cannot be bought with corruption and contractors' money. Marathi is the language of every corner of Maharashtra. Ghatkopar and Mira-Bhayander have not been torn apart and thrown out of Maharashtra, and private builders have not made them independent, autonomous states. Maharashtra is and will remain intact. No matter how many raids the BJP conducts and no matter how much the Shinde faction people try to force Mumbai down the throats of the builders, every particle of Marathi soil will erupt like a volcano. The BJP's East India Company (Surat) has already sold Mumbai. The hypocrites, who call themselves the heirs of Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray, will definitely expel Marathi people from Mumbai when they become partners of this East India Company. Saying that the language of Mumbai is not Marathi is just the beginning. Marathi people will have to fight," said the editorial.
