Google Pixel phones to get battery health feature but not all: Check this list
Google is finally bringing a much-requested battery health feature with Android 16. However, this feature will not be available for all Android phones. According to reports, the new Battery Health menu feature, spotted in Android 16 Beta 3, will only be available on a select few recent Pixel models, leaving out even some of last year's flagships and other Android smartphones.
This feature is similar to Apple's Battery Health, which the Cupertino company introduced in iPhones back in 2018. The feature allows users to view key battery stats such as maximum capacity and health status. This information helps users understand sudden drops in battery performance or unexpected shutdowns.
Google began testing the feature as far back as Android 14 Beta 2 in December 2023. However, the company didn't reveal the exact timeline for its availability. As noted by a Reddit user and highlighted in Android Authority's report, Google has responded on its public Android Issue Tracker, confirming that the battery health indicator will in coming months roll out to the Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
"Due to product limitations, this feature will not be available on older in-market Pixel devices," said a Google developer in response to user queries. The company listed the issue's status as 'Won't Fix (Infeasible),' reads the note. This means Google Pixel models like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, which were launched in October 2023, won't receive the update.
So the Pixel devices eligible for the Battery Health feature are:
– Pixel 8a– Pixel 9– Pixel 9 Pro
– Pixel 9 Pro Fold
If your Pixel isn't on this list, unfortunately, you will not get the update, at least for now.
The unavailability of the battery health feature comes as a turn-off for many Pixel and Android users, as users have been requesting the feature for quite some time. On the other hand, Apple, which made the feature available on iPhones as old as the iPhone 6 (from 2014), gained battery health metrics with iOS 11.3. When will the Battery Health menu be available on Android?
The Battery Health menu is still in beta testing and hasn't yet reached eligible users. It is expected to become widely available once Android 16 rolls out in its stable version in coming months. However, when it does, only the Pixel 8a and newer models will benefit from this system-level diagnostic tool.
Meanwhile, as for other Android smartphone brands, Android 16 might not bring this feature. But given that the feature is part of Android, it is expected that phone makers will offer it in their custom software. In fact, some Android OEMs like Samsung and OnePlus already offer similar battery health tools through their custom Android skins although these too are often limited to newer phones.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai responds to Apple senior VP Eddy Cue's claims on Safari Search's 22-year low
CEO has directly disputed recent claims by senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue , who said in a testimony that Apple saw a decline in Safari search volumes for the first time in 22 years. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During a recent interview, Pichai countered the statement, saying that the company is "seeing overall query growth in search." "Look, we've been very clear. We are seeing overall query growth in search," Pichai said in an interview with The Verge. When pressed specifically about a drop in Safari, he stated, "Look, we have a comprehensive view of how we look at data across the board. There's a lot of, there can be a lot of noise in search data, but everything we see tells us we are seeing query growth including across Apple's devices and platforms." It is to be noted that Cue said Apple is considering revamping Safari's search feature to incorporate more AI features . He blamed an increase in AI searches. Pichai further quantified query growth from AI Overviews, noting that "the query growth is continuing to grow over time." Pichai also issued a challenge to other companies in the Search space on "sending traffic to the web". "I would challenge, I think more than any other company, we think about, we prioritise sending traffic to the web. No one sends traffic to the web in the way we do," he said. "I look at other companies, newer emerging companies, they openly talk about it as something they're not going to do, right? We are the only ones which make it a high priority," he claimed. Pichai draws Search growth parallel with YouTube's rise Pichai characterised the competitive landscape as "very far from a zero sum game." He drew a parallel to the emergence of TikTok, asking, "How has YouTube done since TikTok has come, right? You could ask all these questions there. Like why is it that TikTok comes and YouTube has grown?" Pichai concluded by suggesting that observers often "underestimate in these moments... people are engaging more, doing more with it. We are improving our products."

Google Gemini now automatically summarises your Gmail emails
Google has been steadily injecting AI features into Gmail. Last year, the tech giant integrated Gemini into Gmail, allowing users to leverage the power of generative AI to get a summarised version of individual messages or long threads. This was useful for people who wanted to catch up on a long conversation, especially on small-screen devices like smartphones, but it required users to open the email and tap on the 'Summarize this email' button that appears below the email title. However, Google, on Thursday, May 29, announced that 'summaries will be available at the top of the email content for messages where a summary is helpful, such as longer email threads or messages with several replies.' This means that Gmail will now automatically show a summary of the email created by Gemini wherever it thinks is useful. Google says Gemini will also dynamically update to reflect any updates to the email conversation. If an email or thread does not automatically generate a summary, Google says you can resort to the Gemini sidebar or tap on the Summarise this email button. As of now, this functionality seems to be limited to English and only works with the Android and iOS Gmail apps. Also, the tech giant says the new functionality will be rolling out gradually to everyone in the coming days, so it might take a while before Gemini starts automatically summarising emails for you. Note that this feature will only be available for Google Workspace users, Google One AI Premium subscribers, Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium customers. Announced as part of the May Workspace feature drop, Google is also rolling out Gemini summaries in Google Chat's Home view and a new summary building block in Google Docs. NotebookLM, the AI-powered research tool, is also getting interactive Mind Maps, which can help you discover how different ideas relate to each other.
