Google Pixel phones to get battery health feature but not all: Check this list

India Today07-05-2025
Google is finally bringing a much-requested battery health feature with Android 16. However, this feature will not be available for all Android phones. According to reports, the new Battery Health menu feature, spotted in Android 16 Beta 3, will only be available on a select few recent Pixel models, leaving out even some of last year's flagships and other Android smartphones.
This feature is similar to Apple's Battery Health, which the Cupertino company introduced in iPhones back in 2018. The feature allows users to view key battery stats such as maximum capacity and health status. This information helps users understand sudden drops in battery performance or unexpected shutdowns.
Google began testing the feature as far back as Android 14 Beta 2 in December 2023. However, the company didn't reveal the exact timeline for its availability. As noted by a Reddit user and highlighted in Android Authority's report, Google has responded on its public Android Issue Tracker, confirming that the battery health indicator will in coming months roll out to the Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
"Due to product limitations, this feature will not be available on older in-market Pixel devices," said a Google developer in response to user queries. The company listed the issue's status as 'Won't Fix (Infeasible),' reads the note. This means Google Pixel models like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, which were launched in October 2023, won't receive the update.
So the Pixel devices eligible for the Battery Health feature are:
– Pixel 8a– Pixel 9– Pixel 9 Pro
– Pixel 9 Pro Fold
If your Pixel isn't on this list, unfortunately, you will not get the update, at least for now.
The unavailability of the battery health feature comes as a turn-off for many Pixel and Android users, as users have been requesting the feature for quite some time. On the other hand, Apple, which made the feature available on iPhones as old as the iPhone 6 (from 2014), gained battery health metrics with iOS 11.3. When will the Battery Health menu be available on Android?
The Battery Health menu is still in beta testing and hasn't yet reached eligible users. It is expected to become widely available once Android 16 rolls out in its stable version in coming months. However, when it does, only the Pixel 8a and newer models will benefit from this system-level diagnostic tool.
Meanwhile, as for other Android smartphone brands, Android 16 might not bring this feature. But given that the feature is part of Android, it is expected that phone makers will offer it in their custom software. In fact, some Android OEMs like Samsung and OnePlus already offer similar battery health tools through their custom Android skins although these too are often limited to newer phones.

How students can spot value in a sea of AI-era certifications

The AI boom is powering everything from virtual assistants to self-driving cars. Online platforms are bursting with courses: 'AI Master' bootcamps, micro-credentials with blockchain stamps, and even 12-hour 'become a data scientist' marathons. The hype is real, and so is the pressure to 'upskill' fast. But here's the catch: not every course is a golden ticket. So, how do you, as a student, sift through the chaos to find certifications that truly matter? Don't fall for the flash: Scrolling through learning platforms feels like wandering a neon-lit arcade. Every course screams for your attention, your group chat is buzzing with friends signing up, and X posts make every new course sound like the thing. But stacking credentials without strategy is like buying every gadget at a sale. A 2025 Coursera report found that 72% of students regret taking courses that didn't align with their goals. The fix? Don't chase the sparkly promises. Instead, focus on building a skillset that screams you. You're not here to collect digital trophies. You're here to carve out a future. Watch for traps: Some courses are more hype than substance. Spot these warning signs to save your time and energy. If a course promises you'll 'master AI' in a weekend or become a 'data guru' with no prior skills, it's probably selling dreams, not skills. Real learning takes effort and time. If the instructors' bio is vague or they've never worked on actual AI projects, move on. You need mentors who've been in the trenches. Look for teachers who are data scientists at tech giants, researchers with published work, or engineers who've built AI tools. Platforms like Coursera often share instructor credentials; check them without hands-on work — think coding a model, debugging errors, or presenting a project —are often too fluffy. The best courses have you creating may be a predictive model, a computer vision app, or a data dashboard. These projects show employers you can do AI, not just talk about it. If the course is all abstract theory with no tie to real-world problems, like AI in healthcare, finance, or art, it won't equip you for what employers want. Seek the real deal: Learning AI is a journey, and you need a crew. Courses with forums, peer reviews, or mentorship, like specialisations, keep you motivated and sharp. Check the credentials. Does the certificate carry weight? Google's AI certificates or MIT's MicroMasters are respected because they are rigorous and tied to industry needs. Don't just trust the course website. Scroll through Reddit, check CourseReport reviews, or ping alumni on LinkedIn. A 2024 Glassdoor survey found that 65% of students who vetted courses felt more confident in their career prep. Own your future: Don't chase what's loud on X or what your friends are doing. Chase what sets your heart on fire. Does this course make you better at what you love? Does it push you toward the future you want? Your learning path should reflect your dreams, not the world's noise. The right certification is the one that helps you become the innovator, problem-solver, or leader you're destined to be. In a sea of options, your focus is your strength. How Elon Musk may be right when he told Mark Zuckerberg: Many top engineers of Meta are joining my AI company xAI, and I am paying them …

recently claimed that many top engineers from Meta are now joining his AI company, xAI, asserting that his startup is winning the talent war not with 'insanely high' salaries but with a "hyper merit-based" culture. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This claim appears to be backed by a recent report which indicates a significant talent migration from major tech firms to Musk's AI company. According to a report by The Information, xAI has successfully recruited at least 40 former Google employees since 2023 – essentially supporting Musk's argument of influx of talent from technology giants. Citing LinkedIn and X posts and profiles from xAI employees, the report claims that out of the 40 hires from Google, a notable 19 of those engineers and researchers joined xAI this year alone. Not only Meta and Google, xAI is reported to have hired AI talent from Microsoft. What Elon Musk said on Meta engineers joining xAI Recently, Musk said that a significant number of engineers from Meta are now joining xAI, crediting this appeal to xAI's 'hyper merit-based' culture, where outstanding performance is directly tied to a substantial increase in compensation. Additionally, he highlights the company's 'vastly more market cap growth potential than Meta.' 'Many strong Meta engineers have and are joining xAI and without the need for insane initial comp,' Musk wrote on X, explaining that xAI offers competitive, yet sustainable, compensation and a high-potential alternative to tech giants. The Information's report said that this movement of top-tier talent is central to the development of Grok 4 , a new AI model that Musk claims outperforms similar models from rivals like OpenAI, Meta and Google. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Few employees leaving xAI for other companies ' While a few employees have left xAI for other companies, such as co-founder Kyle Kosic who moved to OpenAI, and infrastructure engineering head Uday Rudarraju , there hasn't been a significant outflow of talent to Google, Microsoft or Meta. Recently, Igor Babuschkin, co-founder of xAI, announced his resignation in a long post shared on X (formerly known as Twitter). Babuschkin talked about his journey from being a physics student to becoming a co-founder and building xAI. He described the experience as 'the most exhilarating time of our lives,' likening his departure to 'a proud parent driving away after sending their kid to college'. He also revealed his early days at xAI were not easy as starting an AI company from scratch required a lot of hard work. xAI is well-known for its demanding work environment, with some teams reportedly working seven days a week, The Information report said. While such an intense pace could lead to burnout for some, many employees are highly motivated by the company's ambitious mission and are eager to contribute to its goals, embracing the rigorous schedule as part of the startup culture. Apple event preview: iPhone 17 lineup specs and prices leak ahead of September launch

September is almost here, and that means one thing in the tech calendar: Apple is about to unveil its latest iPhones -- the iPhone 17 series. The Cupertino giant is expected to pull the wraps off the iPhone 17 line-up, complete with the new iOS 26 out of the box. While the official event is still a few weeks away, the internet is already awash with leaks, renders and bold claims about what Apple might have in store this year. So, what's on the cards? Here's a round-up of the most credible 17 lineup rumoured pricesPricing is always the million-dollar question. Apple has reportedly managed to blunt the full impact of Trump-era tariffs thanks to its growing US manufacturing partnerships. That said, with Asia still central to its supply chain, price swings remain a latest chatter suggests Apple may increase base storage to 256GB across the iPhone 17 range, up from 128GB. If that happens, insiders say a $50 (around Rs 4,400) price bump could follow. So this means, if the iPhone 16 (vanilla variant) was launched at Rs 79,900, the iPhone 17 would cost around Rs 83,300. If the rumours are true, then the high-end variants will also witness a big price hike. As for the brand-new iPhone 17 Air, several sources have reportedly pointed to a price tag of around $900 (Rs 78,886). That would place it above the standard iPhone 17 but below the Pro models, carving out its own niche in the line-up. Since this is the US pricing, for Indian users, the iPhone 17 Air could range between Rs 90,000 to Rs 1 lakh. iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Air expected specsiPhone 17 Air: Rumoured to be Apple's thinnest phone yet, borrowing the 'Air' name from its ultralight laptops. Expect a 6.6-inch screen, Dynamic Island, Camera Control button, and a titanium frame. Colour choices may include black, white, light blue and light 17 and 17 Pro: Leaks hint at aluminium builds, lighter than titanium, and potentially a new full-width 'camera island' design. The Pro model could also feature a redesigned antenna for stronger wireless reception, according to leaker Majin Bu. Colours tipped include black, white, steel grey, green, purple and light blue for the standard 17, and bolder shades (black, white, grey, dark blue and orange) for the Pro versions. iPhone 17 Pro Max: As usual, expect the larger, longer-lasting variant to round out the line-up. Rumours suggest the same aluminium frame and camera island design as the Pro, with added battery life thanks to its 17 launch dateApple traditionally hosts its iPhone event in September, and this year appears no different. According to citing German carrier sources, the date pencilled in is Tuesday, September 9, typically sends invites only a week or two before the big day, so nothing is official yet. Still, based on past precedent, early September is a safe bet. Looking forward, some reports hint that from 2026, Apple may stagger its launches, unveiling Pro models in autumn and standard versions in spring. For the iPhone 17 family, however, everything is expected to land together next month.- Ends
