Government to ‘take forward our ambitions' for Northern Powerhouse Rail
NPR is a scheme to improve rail services between Liverpool and Leeds, which often suffer delays and cancellations.
The previous Conservative government's Integrated Rail Plan sparked outrage among northern leaders in November 2021, when it said that a new line would only be built on one section, and the rest of the route would get enhancements to existing lines.
Ms Reeves said: 'In the coming weeks I will set out this Government's plan to take forward our ambitions for Northern Powerhouse Rail.'
The Chancellor announced £3.5 billion more funding to support the TransPennine Route Upgrade, a project to improve the railway between York and Manchester.
She said the Government would provide £2.5 billion of additional funding to enable the 'continued delivery' of East West Rail, a new line between Oxford and Cambridge.
In her spending review she also said railways in Wales would get £445 million investment over 10 years.
Improvements at Cardiff West Junction and Padeswood sidings will be among those to be funded.
Ms Reeves told the Commons: 'For 14 years, the Conservatives failed the people of Wales.
'Those days are over.'

MPs call for free bus travel for under-22s in England
The Transport Select Committee, which made the recommendation, said it would improve young people's access to 'work and skills opportunities' and 'help embed long-term public transport use'. Free bus travel is offered to under-22s in Scotland. People aged 16-21 in Wales are entitled to a one-third discount on fares, and from next month will be able to travel for £1 per journey. Parts of England offer discounted or free bus travel for young people, such as London for 16 and 17-year-olds. People are entitled to free bus travel in England when they reach the state pension age, which is currently 66 but will rise from next year. Bus fares in England for all passengers are capped at £3 until March 2027. In a report on buses, the select committee said: 'England's patchwork of local youth concessions contrasts with national schemes in Scotland and Wales. 'A coherent national approach to ensure fair access across England is essential if the Government is serious about driving economic growth, which depends on removing barriers to education, training, and employment for the next generation.' The report described public transport as a 'major barrier to employment for young people', especially in places with limited services. It added: 'In some areas, transport is restricting opportunity rather than enabling it.' The committee urged the Government to reform the way local bus services are funded, with longer-term settlements. It also called for a national ambition for a minimum level on public transport connectivity. Department for Transport (DfT) figures show the number of bus journeys taken in England outside London fell by 22% from 4.6 billion in 2009 to 3.6 billion in 2024. Labour MP Ruth Cadbury, who chairs the committee, said: 'Those most affected by unreliable or even non-existent buses include the young, who need them to get to school, college, university and their first jobs. 'Denying young people these experiences denies them their life chances. 'We call for a universal, free bus pass for all under-22s to equalise opportunity. 'While the bus fare caps have been beneficial, the Government has yet to spell out a coherent strategy of what they aim to achieve, and whether more targeted options could produce better outcomes. 'While the Government's Bus Services Bill contains positive ideas, the Transport Committee's report says ministers should go further to get bums back on seats.' The Bill, which is going through Parliament, will lead to an overhaul of buses, such as by giving all local transport authorities new powers to run their own services. It will also reduce some of the red tape involved in bus franchising, including reducing the minimum period between local areas taking control of services and being allowed to start operations. A DfT spokesperson said: 'After decades of decline, we're providing a record £1 billion in multi-year funding to improve the reliability and frequency of bus services across the country. 'Our landmark Bus Services Bill will protect routes and prevent services from being scrapped, bringing buses back into local control, and will put passengers at the heart of services. 'We have also stepped in to prevent a fare hike for passengers by extending the £3 fare cap until March 2027.'

Sturgeon: Salmond happier for SNP to be destroyed than succeed without him
In her memoir, Frankly, the former first minister said she had come to the realisation that her former friend and mentor 'wanted to destroy me'. She said her relationship with the late politician began to deteriorate as soon as she became leader of Scotland. Mr Salmond, who died last year, quit as SNP leader and first minister in 2014 after the Scottish independence referendum. Ms Sturgeon also claims in her book that Mr Salmond had admitted to her that the 'substance' of one of the sexual harassment complaints had been true. The former Alba Party leader was acquitted of all charges relating to the allegations at court in 2020, while a judicial review found the Scottish Government's own investigation of him was tainted with apparent bias. Ms Sturgeon said her former mentor had created a conspiracy theory about Scotland's core democratic institutions to shield himself from accountability. She said Mr Salmond never produced a 'shred of evidence' to support these claims. She accused him of trying to 'distort' and 'weaponise' the trauma of victims. In her book, which was on sale in some places ahead of schedule on Monday, she said: 'In his (Salmond's) efforts to turn himself into the wronged person, he demonstrated that nothing and no one was sacrosanct for him. 'There was never the merest hint of concern about the damage he did to the party he previously led. 'Indeed, it felt to me that he would have rather destroyed the SNP than see it succeed without him.' She accused her former boss of having 'impugned the integrity' of the institutions 'at the heart of Scottish democracy', including the Government, Police Scotland and Crown Office. She went on: 'The fact that he never produced a shred of credible evidence that a conspiracy existed, because it didn't, wasn't enough to stop him seeking to damage the reputation of these institutions and shatter the morale of those who worked in them. 'He was prepared to traumatise, time and again, the women at the centre of it all. 'A jury concluded that what they experienced wasn't criminal, but that does not mean those experiences didn't happen. 'Even if he never said so explicitly, he was accusing them of being liars, of making it all up.' The former SNP leader said Mr Salmond had made his former allies and SNP colleagues 'mortal enemies' in the fallout over misconduct claims against him. 'In that regard,' she wrote, 'I was clearly public enemy number one. For a while, I told myself that the bonds between us would be stronger than his thirst for revenge. 'Eventually, though, I had to face the fact that he was determined to destroy me. 'I was now engaged in mortal political combat with someone I knew to be both ruthless and highly effective. 'It was a difficult reality to reconcile myself to. 'So too was losing him as a friend. I went through what I can only describe as a grieving process. 'For a time after we stopped speaking, I would have conversations with him in my head about politics and the issues of the day. 'I had occasional, but always vivid, dreams in which we were still on good terms. I would wake up from these feeling utterly bereft.' Alba Party leader Kenny MacAskill said: 'It is Nicola Sturgeon who has demeaned the office of First Minister and who has been shown to be without shame or honour in besmirching a man now dead. 'Alex Salmond was acquitted on all charges and it was Sturgeon's government which was found to have acted unlawfully unfairly and tainted with apparent bias. 'The break in friendship came from her when she turned on her mentor who had made her politically. 'Shamefully she continued to do so even when he is dead.'

JD Vance strikes up unlikely friendship with The Apprentice star Thomas Skinner
JD Vance was told he was "not welcome" in the Cotswolds by a group of protesters who had gathered to wave signs, banners and placards in anger at the US politician's visit US Vice-President JD Vance was lauded as "a proper gent" - by The Apprentice star Thomas Skinner after the pair had a barbecue last night during his UK visit. The amicable scenes contrasted hugely to the protests earlier in the week in the Cotswolds near the politician's holiday residence. Locals there blasted Mr Vance's heavy security - seemingly a mix of police and US Secret Service agents - as "a bit over the top" and vented their anger at the visit altogether. But last night, Mr Vance, 41, continued his unlikely friendship with Mr Skinner, a charismatic Essex trader who has become a social media star since appearing on The Apprentice in 2019. Mr Vance invited the 34-year-old TV personality to a barbecue at the Cotswolds holiday residence, along with Cambridge Academic James Orr and Conservative MP Danny Kruger. The encounter came after lawmakers both here and in the US expressed concern for Donald Trump's mental state. Writing on social media, dad-of-three Mr Skinner said: "Here is a pic of Me and Vice President JD Vance towards the end of the night after a few beers. I'm overdressed in my suit, but when the VP invites you to a BBQ, you don't risk turning up in shorts an flip-flops. Cracking night in the beautiful English countryside with JD, his friends and family. Once in a lifetime. Bosh." In another reply, he added: "When the Vice President of the USA invites ya for a BBQ an beers, you say yes. Unreal night with JD and his friends n family. He was a proper gent. Lots of laughs and some fantastic food. A brilliant night, one to tell the grand kids about mate. Bosh." Mr Skinner shared photographs of him posing alongside Mr Vance, who had visited Chevening House in Kent where he and his family stayed with Foreign Secretary David Lammy for two days last week. He today will meet Nigel Farage - although the Reform UK leader did not meet with President Trump when he visited the UK last month. It is unclear if Mr Skinner, a pillow salesperson, and Mr Vance had ever met before but their friendship has blossomed through social media. The Apprentice star suggested he was delighted to accept the invite to the barbecue in Dean, Oxfordshire, a picturesque hamlet flooded with police and security this week. Among those who gathered in and around Dean to protest recently was Sue Moon, a 54-yearold therapist who said she didn't recognise the purpose of Mr Vance's trip. She added: "The Cotswolds is the home of ordinary people who are not comfortable with JD Vance coming here. What is happening in America regarding reproductive rights is appalling. "It's also very hard to welcome somebody who said that Britain is a random country. I am not sure what is the purpose of his visit and on a local level it has caused a lot of disruption and roads on our area have been closed."
