Citroen city car drivers doing 24-hour Silverstone race

BBC News03-05-2025

Dozens of near identical city cars are preparing to take on the ultimate challenge of a 24-hour race on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. The Citroen C1s will line up at 17:40 BST on Saturday and the chequered flag will come down at the Northamptonshire venue on Sunday afternoon. The event marks a return to the 'home of motorsport' after being staged in Anglesey last year. One competitor described it as "the most bonkers race".
The first 24-hour endurance race for the small city car was staged by the C1 Racing Club in 2017.Motorsport journalist Matt Prior took part in 2019 and said the contest was "24 hours of pure lunacy" and "the most bonkers race I've been in".
He reported that 13 of the 99 starters had rolled during the race and the lead driver, wrongly convinced he was on his last lap, was overtaken at the end by the car that started 99th.The British Racing and Sports Car Club (BRSCC) partnered with the C1 Racing Club for the first time to stage the race in 2022.The increasing cost of racing at Silverstone persuaded the C1 club to carry out a survey of its drivers, which led to a move to Anglesey for 2024.
A spokesperson for the BRSCC said: "From beginning the race late Saturday afternoon, racing through darkness overnight and back into the light of day, drivers and teams will face many challenges on and off track. "Just making it to the chequered flag alone is a impressive feat, but to do well or even win this event it will require a perfectly executed mix of teamwork, strategy, preparation, consistency – and even a little luck."

Lance Stroll has had a ‘successful' op and will be back on the grid in Canada

Formula One But there's still no word on reports that he lost his temper after quali in Spain… Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Lance Stroll has been declared fit to race at his home grand prix in Canada this weekend after missing out in Spain a fortnight ago with pain in his hand and wrist. The Aston Martin driver withdrew from the Spanish Grand Prix in the hours after qualifying – meaning only 19 cars lined up on the grid – with the team revealing that he'd been in discomfort for several weeks. Advertisement - Page continues below Apparently his symptoms dated back to a procedure he had two years ago following a nasty cycling accident in which he fractured both wrists, his left hand and his big right toe. Barely three weeks later he'd made a (genuinely Herculean) recovery in time for the first race of 2023. This latest episode has meant another trip to the operating theatre, but once again he's bounced back in double quick time. You might like 'Lance had a successful medical procedure to resolve the symptoms he has been experiencing,' said Aston in a statement. 'Lance is feeling fit and healthy, and is excited to compete in front of his home crowd. And Lance himself added: 'I am excited to get back behind the wheel with the team for my home Grand Prix this weekend. I was always going to fight hard to be ready to race in front of the Montreal crowd. Advertisement - Page continues below 'I'm feeling good after my procedure and put some laps in at Paul Ricard this week to prepare. Thanks for all the support, see you guys this weekend!' Now, the elephant in the room: when all this unfolded two weeks ago, reports quickly surfaced that Stroll had lost his temper in the Aston garage after qualifying, having been half a second slower than teammate Fernando Alonso. There was some suggestion that Stroll's, er, behaviour had made his injuries worse, and while Aston denied some specific details, the general thrust of the reports weren't refuted. So we're none the wiser to what actually happened. No doubt it'll come up in every interview before FP1 in Canada… This wouldn't be the first time Stroll's emotions had gotten the better of him: in 2023 he had to apologise after shoving his trainer in full view of the television cameras having knocked out of quali in Q1.
