Gujarat Court Fines Man Rs 1 Lakh For Attending Proceedings From Toilet
The Gujarat High Court on Monday directed a man, facing contempt of court for attending a virtual court hearing while relieving himself on a toilet seat, to deposit Rs 1 lakh with the court's registry after observing that he was ready to tender an unconditional apology.
The incident occurred on June 20 when Justice Nirzar S Desai was hearing a case. A video of the man soon went viral, prompting the high court to initiate suo motu contempt proceedings.
On Monday, the division bench of Justices AS Supehia and RT Vachhani directed the man, identified as Samad Abdul Rehman Shah, to deposit Rs 1 lakh in the court registry by July 22, the next date of the hearing.
"The contemnor has admitted to his conduct during the live-streaming proceedings and submitted that he was ready to tender an unconditional apology. Thus, at this stage, we direct the contemnor to deposit the amount of Rs 1 lakh before the registry of this court by the next date of hearing," the court ordered.
According to the report submitted to the court, Shah attended the hearing on June 20 for a total of 74 minutes, during which he was seen sitting on a toilet and relieving himself.
Shah's lawyer told the court that his client would tender an unconditional apology for his behaviour.
When questioned, the lawyer confirmed he had advised Shah to present himself appropriately for the hearing.
The now-infamous video showed Shah using a toilet during the proceedings, sparking outrage and leading the court to order the video's immediate removal and ban, citing damage to the judiciary's image.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gujarat High Court has permitted lawyers and litigants to join hearings virtually. Proceedings are live-streamed via the court's YouTube channel.
After finishing his business, Shah was seen picking up his phone and leaving. Justice Desai appeared unaware of his surroundings at the time.
Wearing wireless earphones, he can be seen logging in again later in the livestream, sitting in a room and waiting for his turn.
After nearly 10 minutes, he identified himself as Abdul Samad Shah, a resident of Kim village in Surat and the complainant in an assault case.
His lawyers told the court that Shah had lodged a complaint against two individuals but that a compromise had been reached between both parties.
While hearing the petition filed by the accused seeking to quash the FIR, Justice Desai asked Shah if he consented to the plea. Upon hearing Shah's no-objection, the judge approved the petition.

Attack on Pune journalist Sneha Barve: She was beaten with rods for reporting on land grab, says father
Describing the incident in a conversation with ThePrint on the phone, Sneha's father, Dattatray Barve said, 'The local gundas had illegally taken over a plot of land near the riverbed. Sneha went there to report on the issue. They came from behind and hit her very badly. She fell to the ground but locals saved her and carried her to the hospital.' The incident took place on 4 July, but it was only after a video of the attack went viral that there has been public outrage. The video shows Sneha, the editor of Samarth Bharat newspaper and SBP Youtube channel, lying on the ground while a few men assault her. New Delhi: Sneha Barve, a 27-year-old journalist, was reporting on land grab and illegal construction of tin sheds in Nighotwadi village in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district, when she was brutally assaulted with rods, causing serious injuries on her arms, back and head. Shrikant Kankar, a senior police inspector at the Manchar Police Station told ThePrint that an FIR was filed the night of the incident, and that five people were arrested and later released after they were granted bail. 'The main accused (Pandurang Morde) was not arrested because he is admitted in the hospital for surgery in his foot,' he said. An FIR with sections 118 (2), 115 (2), 189 (2), 191 (2), 190 and 351 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, retaining to grievous hurt, intimidation, unlawful assembly and intimidation, which attract a maximum punishment of between one to two years only, were filed. 'We will kill you if you don't withdraw the court case and stop working on the land,' the FIR quotes the accused as telling Kale and his family. Despite the land being under judicial dispute, the accused allegedly ploughed and prepared the land for sugarcane cultivation. On 4 July 2025, Kale witnessed Pandurang More and others leveling the land using tractors. As per the FIR, he brought Sneha to the spot to document the act. 'She then took pictures on her mobile phone and recorded a video, which they tried to stop. They warned her not to report it or post it on any media platforms,' says Kale, who added that the accused also threatened to kill him, his son and his wife, if he didn't withdraw the case and stop claiming ownership of the land. The violence against the young female journalist has been condemned by senior journalists and coalitions advocating freedom of speech and journalists. Expressing anger over the attack on Sneha, the Network of Women in Media India (NWMI) demanded the immediate arrest of the assailant on charges of attempt to murder. 'Morde, who has a criminal record, is already out on bail in an attempt to murder case. He is a local businessman, allegedly having close ties to the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra. Thus far, there has been no condemnation of this attack on a journalist from the Maharashtra government,' the statement read. NWMI added that it was 'shocking' that more 'serious charges' were not applied in the case. 'Sneha Barve, who has faced threats for her reporting earlier, too, must not end up as an addition to these abysmal figures,' the statement added. In a statement against the attack, the 'Free Speech Collective', an independent initiative advocating for freedom of expression and press freedom, wrote that the attack against Sneha 'typifies' the fragile state of press freedom, 'especially in district areas where journalists are subject to immediate and violent reprisal if they dare to report on corruption and illegal activities by local powers.' Pantheerankavu robbery: Cops recover Rs 39 lakh out of Rs 40 lakh robbed sum
Kozhikode: In a significant breakthrough in the case of robbing Rs 40 lakh from a bank employee at Pantheerankavu near Kozhikode, police have recovered Rs 39 lakh of the swindled amount. The money, part of the amount robbed by accused Shibin Lal, was found packed in plastic and buried in a plot about half-a-kilometre from his house at Pallipuram near Pantheerankavu. The robbery took place on June 11 and Shibin Lal was arrested three days later. At the time of the arrest, only Rs 55,000 was recovered and Shibin Lal claimed to have handed over ₹45,000 to a third accused, Dinaranju alias Kuttappi. The second accused, Shibin Lal's wife Krishnalekha, and Kuttappi were arrested on June 23. Shibin Lal and Krishnalekha misled officials at ESAF Bank by claiming that they had gold worth Rs 40 lakh pledged at a private firm. They produced fake receipts and convinced the bank to give them Rs 40 lakh in cash to take over the pledged gold and mortgage at ESAF bank. The bank staff came to Pantheerankavu with the required cash to reclaim the pledged gold from the firm where he had pledged it. It was only during a third custodial interrogation that he confessed and revealed the location where he had buried the money. Police said shortly after the robbery that Shibin Lal switched off all three of his mobile phones. He set aside Rs 1 lakh for his expenses and secretly buried the remaining Rs 39 lakh in a private property, before escaping to Palakkad. Feroke ACP A M Siddique said the breakthrough came following a tip-off that someone had approached a private financial institution on Shibin Lal's behalf, asking whether a Rs 35 lakh one-time settlement could be made in lieu of an outstanding ₹80 lakh loan. Another lead came from CCTV footage in Kondotti area which showed Shibin Lal travelling without the bag. After that Shibin Lal was questioned again during which he revealed the actual location.
