Ahmedabad: For countless govt employees, the joy of retirement was often overshadowed by the anxiety of a long wait for their post-service benefits. However, in a pioneering initiative, govt school employees in Ahmedabad city, rural, and district panchayat areas are now receiving all their post-retirement benefits on the very day they retire, eliminating the long-standing delays of four to six months.
This significant shift was highlighted at a special retirement felicitation ceremony recently organised for teachers, principals, and administrative staff retiring in May. During the event, Ahmedabad City district education officer (DEO) Rohit Chaudhary announced that all 130 retiring employees were provided their full benefits, including general provident fund (GPF), gratuity, and pension payment order (PPO) numbers, on the same day.
These benefits typically require verification from trust boards and multiple layers of govt approvals, which often cause long delays.
Similarly, Krupa Jha, DEO of rural Ahmedabad, confirmed that 70 secondary and 45 primary school teachers in rural areas also received all their due benefits on their retirement day. This initiative allows employees to begin their pensions from the very next month without any hassle.
A GPF cheque is also handed over directly, freeing retirees from the burden of repeatedly visiting offices or navigating bureaucratic hurdles.
Teachers who attended the ceremony expressed profound gratitude, emphasising that such initiatives spare them the ordeal of travelling to Gandhinagar or navigating corrupt systems that previously resulted in months of delay and unnecessary mental stress. They urged that this progressive model be implemented across the state so that all retiring govt employees can leave service with dignity and peace of mind, having received the fruits of their dedicated years of service on time.
Neeta Shah, principal of Sheth Amulakh Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad, said, "Today, as I retire, a special ceremony was organised during which I received all my retirement benefits. This truly brings a sense of happiness to employees, as the retirement process usually takes a lot of time and involves running around to different offices."
Kiran Banker, teacher from Ghatlodiya School, said, "Receiving the GPF and pension order on the very day of retirement is a great joy.
These processes usually take a lot of time and effort. In the past, it would often take three to six months to complete everything."
Ramesh Patel, teacher from Bhavna Higher Secondary School, shared, "Today, I received my GPF cheque and, under the 'Last Pay' scheme, I was also allotted my PPO number. I will submit it to the treasury office, and my pension will begin from next month itself."

Schools in A'bad warned against forcing parents to buy from set shops
Ahmedabad: As schools across Gujarat prepare to reopen after the summer vacation, several complaints surfaced from parents alleging that some private schools were forcing them to buy books, school bags and stationery from specific vendors. In response, the district education officer (DEO) issued circulars to all school principals, instructing them not to pressure parents or sell educational materials directly through the school. The issue came to light following multiple complaints, including one from Suffah School in Kalupur. The school allegedly compelled parents to buy textbooks and stationery only from designated sources. Based on this complaint, the DEO issued a notice to the school, demanding an explanation within two days as to why a penalty of Rs 10,000 should not be imposed. On Wednesday, NSUI activists submitted evidence to the DEO office, highlighting that various schools were pressuring parents to buy school bags, uniforms and stationery from specific shops. Activists also claimed that such practices were ongoing in several institutions. In response, the DEO office reiterated that all schools must follow only govt-approved textbooks and syllabi. Schools are prohibited from using or promoting unapproved educational material. Furthermore, schools are instructed not to compel parents to make purchases from particular vendors or sell such items on their premises. The DEO warned that any school found violating these norms will face action.

Two A'bad schools face action over fee violations
Ahmedabad: Two private schools in Ahmedabad came under scrutiny for alleged violations related to fee collection, prompting swift action by education authorities. In Isanpur, Vedant International School was served a show-cause notice for collecting excess fees from students without approval from the Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC). Ahmedabad City DEO Rohit Chaudhary confirmed that a complaint was filed with the FRC alleging that the school charged Rs 47,000 per student, despite the approved fee being Rs 37,000. The school submitted a proposal for a fee hike to the FRC but began collecting the higher amount before approval was granted. Based on the complaint, a notice was issued and an inquiry was ordered. In another case, parents complained to the district education office that Mukt Jeevan English School in Maninagar was charging Rs 1,000 as admission fees from students enrolled under Right to Education (RTE). According to RTE provisions, no fees can be charged from such students. In response, the DEO issued a notice to the school, asking for an explanation within two days as to why a penalty of Rs 10,000 per student should not be imposed for the violation. Further action in both cases will be taken based on the schools' responses to the notices. Authorities reiterated that strict measures will be enforced to ensure compliance with fee regulations and RTE provisions.
