Gofundme for slain student Kyle Whorrall's family
A Gofundme set up to help the grieving family of slain American entomology student Kyle Whorrall has raised just shy of $40,000.
At 8am, the amount raised was sitting at $39,129.
A message on the Gofundme page said the money would go towards travel costs for his family and other related expenses.
'Although no one can eliminate the overwhelming grief and difficult tasks that Kyle's family now faces, we can help relieve the associated financial burden.'

Whorrall was fatally attacked last Saturday on St Johns Rd in Meadowbank, East Auckland, while he waited at a bus stop with his groceries.
At a tearful vigil held yesterday, flatmates, who described themselves as his 'chosen family', broke down as they tried to speak.
'He was gentle, he was kind, he was very thoughtful,' one of the five flatmates said.
'He loved crafting and painting and sewing and creating plushies – he loved plushies so much, and plants.
'He cared deeply about what he did and the people in his life.'
Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin said yesterday police had arrested a 16-year-old and charged him with Whorrall's murder.
He appeared in the Auckland District Court yesterday and also faced an aggravated robbery charge.
His case has been transferred to the High Court at Auckland for his next appearance on May 14.

As a youth, he has automatic name suppression.
A 32-year-old, charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder, also appeared and was granted interim name suppression.
Charging documents seen by the Herald allege she 'actively suppressed' evidence against the teen by selling a car to help him escape after arrest.
She has been remanded until the same date without plea.
Whorrall was struck with a 'long' weapon about 10pm on Saturday, suffering multiple head injuries, and later died in hospital.
Police had 'obtained further information' about a black SUV that became the subject of a media appeal when Baldwin held a press conference about the case on Tuesday.
'The Operation Aberfeldy team commenced investigations into this vehicle of interest and its movements.
'I can confirm we have now located this vehicle on the North Shore and it has been seized by police with a detailed forensic examination under way.'

Police reveal victim was also run over after Stokes Valley shooting
Police are seeking a second person involved in a shooting which took place in Stokes Valley earlier this month. The 40-year-old victim was shot outside his home address in Hanson Grove at 9am on Sunday, August 3. Detective Inspector Haley Ryan said he remained in critical condition at Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit. "Police believe two men drove to the victim's address in a purple Toyota Mark X station wagon, registration KMW290. "On their arrival the male passenger exited the vehicle and, moments later, shot the victim," Ryan said. New Zealander detained by ICE waits for decision on six-year-old son's release

Photo: GoFundMe A friend of Sarah Shaw, a New Zealander detained at the US-Canada border , says they're expecting to hear today whether her six-year-old son will be released. Shaw and her son Isaac, who live in Washington state, were detained three weeks ago after dropping her other children off in Vancouver to catch a flight. A graduate student working towards her masters degree and working for the state in corrections, Shaw had lived in America for the past three years. Victoria Besancon explained that there were two parts to Shaw's visa, known as a "combo card" - first, an I-360 visa (the kind granting immigration status to a widow or, in Shaw's case, a victim of domestic violence), and second, an employment visa, which Shaw was granted when she was employed by the state. Shaw was waiting on both parts of her visa to be renewed, but long wait times on I-360s meant this part was not renewed at the same time as her employment visa - but Shaw did not know that, Besancon said, assuming the visa card she received in the post meant she was fully approved. Besancon said ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officials at the border could have allowed Shaw to return anyway by filing for humanitarian parole, but due to increased detainment quotas and "the atmosphere in America right now", many people were being detained who normally would not have been. Isaac, however, was being held illegally, she said, as he possessed all the right paperwork to re-enter the country. They were expecting a decision today on whether ICE would release him into her care. Despite Isaac's paperwork, he was still detained along with his mother, which meant they needed to be kept in a family detainment centre - of which there are only three, with the nearest option to Washington state in Texas. "Instead of being detained in her state of record, which is Washington, where her legal attorney would have had a much easier time defending her and requesting information, they took her multiple states away," Besancon said. If Isaac was released, it would hopefully mean Shaw could be transported to a facility in her own state. Retaining legal counsel in both states was expensive, on top of Shaw not being able to work. The GoFundMe page Besanon set up for her friend had topped US$37,000 - that is, nearly NZ$64,000 - by Tuesday evening, leaving her "speechless". "I was hoping to just get her rent covered for a month, I had no idea that this was going to get so much support." As well as donations, they had also been receiving stories from other families who had experienced similar situations. "I know it's really high on Sarah's priority list that when she does get out, to try and find a way to advocate for this."
