Banbury marks 20th anniversary of the Fine Lady statue
A town has marked twenty years since the unveiling of one of its most iconic landmarks.Adderbury Village Morris danced around the Fine Lady on a White Horse and people laid bouquets of flowers to celebrate its unveiling on South Bar, opposite Banbury Cross in Oxfordshire, on 27 April 2005.She is depicted as a Queen of the May with wild roses and daffodils in her crown and commemorates a nursery rhyme which has made the town famous throughout the world.Artist Rosy Burke, who was part of the long campaign to get the statue made, said the statue was "full of meaning".
The planning of the statue endured planning battles and critics thought it a waste of money. Ms Burke said it took about six years to raise the money and create it.But efforts paid off and Princess Anne delivered a speech at the unveiling, saying it "reflects a very fine piece of art which we will all be proud of in the future"."And the extraordinary fame that Banbury has not just in the United Kingdom but around the world because of those few famous lines," she added, referring to the Ride A Cock Horse To Banbury Cross nursery rhyme.
Ms Burke said at that moment she had had "tears running down my cheeks". "All the traffic had been stopped all the way round Banbury Cross and there were thousands of people there, all leaning up on ladders and trying to see the princess."And there were beautiful April showers ... the church bells were ringing, it was absolutely splendid."
The sculpture portrays the lady scattering petals upon the people of Banbury to bring them good luck and fertility. "She's riding this enormous male stallion and he's pawing the ground impatiently," Ms Burke said.She added that the statue was "full of meaning", having thirteen flowers in the crown for the ancient months of the year.On her visiting the sculptors to choose the pattern with the committee, she had given them a bunch of daffodils as a gift."One of the sculptors dipped one of the strappy leaves into wax and embedded it in the wax crown he was creating."We embedded lucky horse shoes under each one of the horse's feet, there's butterflies and moths and a little frog down at a low level for children which represents community."

Well, this is certainly different: a dystopian musical tribute to the life and works of Oscar Wilde in a basement venue dressed to look like a mashup of a Berlin club and Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdrome. If you're eagerly looking for a meaty plot, you're in for slim pickings. Originating in New York and the brainchild of its book-writer Mark Mauriello (also playing 'Oscar'), this is a production big on vibes: a loud confection of shiny surfaces, breathless choreography and a thumping, punky score. If the kids from Fame were queer fugitives hiding underground from a totalitarian state in a climate-wrecked near future, it might be a bit like this. That's basically also the premise. For these social renegades and misfits on the run, Noughties pop culture has become their religion, evil step-mum Julie Cooper from The OC their goddess and The Real Housewives their saints. This show is not bezzie mates with understatement, as Mauriello goes nuclear on how performance is reality. As the rise of Twitter gets thrown into the mix, it's about as deep as a puddle and as subversive as taking a photo of your middle finger in front of Trump Tower. But in spite of this – maybe even because of its raucous earnestness – it sweeps you up. And as part of the in-show musical re-telling of his life that the characters stage every night, the re-imagining of Wilde as the original social media influencer is absurdly enjoyable. Andrew Barret Cox's score is a frantically vibrating wall of sound into which the show's well-intentioned switch to giving the perspective of Wilde's wife collides with an energy-sapping jolt. And the attempt to connect the grim outside world of the show's universe to the themes of Wilde's life – that reality will get you, even if you pretend it doesn't exist – involves some Frankenstein's monster stitching together. But director Shira Milikowsky's production wisely lives on adrenalin, powered by a cast of actors and dancers who don't pause for a second as they fling themselves around the dancefloor and stage. Is this a great show? No. Does the plot make sense? Not really. Will it sweep you up in its brash spectacle and attitude, if you let it? Just maybe, yes.

Andy Cohen weighs into Trump and Elon Musk spat with wild offer for them to do a Real Housewives reunion show
Andy Cohen is chiming in with a bizarre offer in an effort to bring an end to the new feud between President Donald Trump and X owner Elon Musk. Musk, the 53-year-old Tesla magnate who purchased Twitter for $44 billion and turned it into X, became one of President Trump's top advisors, leading up the newly-established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However he left his government post in late May 2025, after his 130-day deadline as a special government employee expired. While it seemed that Musk parted ways with Trump and his government post amicably, things quickly turned ugly when Musk criticized Trump's Big Beautiful Bill. A feud started quickly, after Musk called the bill, 'an abomination,' as Trump threatened to terminated Musk's government contracts, while Musk alleged that Trump has ties to Jeffrey Epstein and even called for his impeachment. Now Andy Cohen has chimed in with a hilarious solution to this new feud: a Real Housewives-style reunion show. 'LET ME HOST THE REUNION!' Cohen tweeted on Thursday afternoon in all caps, along with an American flag emoji. Jared Moskowitz, a Democratic U.S. Representative from Florida, even got in on the fun, designing a seating chart, in true Bravo fashion. Moskowitz kept with the Bravo tradition of having the two pivotal figures from each Housewives season in the first chairs on either side of Cohen, with, naturally, Trump and Musk taking the top seats. Following Trump is his Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Cheers star George Wendt's cause of death revealed after death aged 76
Cheers star George Wendt died at the age of 75 last month and the cause of his death has now been revealed. The actor, best known for his role as Norm Peterson in the 1980s sitcom, died at his home early on the morning of May 20. Wendt, who was beloved by millions of fans, reportedly died of a cardiac arrest. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released Wendt's death certificate on Thursday (June 6), TMZ reports. Wendt was pronounced dead last month on May 20, the document states. It also states he was cremated on May 28. The family have told TMZ that the actor died peacefully in his sleep at home. More Trending His family said in a statement at the time, 'George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. 'He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.' The certificate is also said to list a series of underlying causes of Wendt's death, with congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and hypertension.
