‘Super Refund Saturday' helps Springfield residents file tax returns
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Local organizations partnered together to help Springfield-area residents with their taxes.
The Springfield Partners for Community Action is partnering with KeyBank to help support the community and put smiles on faces during an often stressful process for many: filing tax returns.
Through the Springfield Partners Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, Hampden County Residents who made up to $67,000 in the 2024 tax year can receive free income tax preparation.

'Our mission is to provide the resources and the tools for the community to better their bottom line to create economic stability for families,' said Terryl Wilson, VITA Psych Coordinator for Springfield Partners for Community Action.
KeyBank has held Super Refund Saturdays for 20 years as a way to help tax filers with tax preparation, but this is the first time they have offered free services in Massachusetts. Not only is this event helping with tax preparation, but it also helps residents understand and take advantage of eligible tax credits.
Volunteers help residents understand if they qualify for tax credit programs, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, which subsidizes low-income families as well as many others.
'We work with them one-on-one. We answer any questions that they have to make sure that there's no confusion,' said Analisha Michanczyk, Regional Responsibility Officer of KeyBank. 'If they qualify for our Earned Income Tax Credit, we make sure that's on there and that they have all the information so that we can get them the best and the most amount of money on their tax return as possible.'The organization leaders said that often someone won't know about eligible credits, or will fill out the wrong paperwork. This partnership helps to ensure residents will receive the credits they qualify for.
Taxes are due by Tuesday, April 15.

DTA ‘Pathways to Work' program celebrates its participants
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Healey-Driscoll Administration is celebrating residents who have transitioned from public assistance to meaningful employment. The Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) provides services and benefits to over 1.2 million people in the state. When families ask for SNAP or cash assistance, they are offered other opportunities, such as different programs. How many families are in Massachusetts emergency housing assistance One of the programs is called 'Pathways to Work'. In this program, participants receive job and college readiness training. At the end, some may get a GED, a Hi-Set, or a new job. It all comes at their own pace. 'There were times where I, I wasn't able to attain a job due to unforseen circumstances, and because of DTA and the programs that they do require for us, I was able to succeed, save money and become the person I did want to become,' Pathways To Work participant Crystal Ortiz said. The celebration recognized the participants who finished the program. One client ended up getting a job as a career coach through DTA. There was also a panel discussion, testimonies, and remarks from DTA leaders. Holyoke Stop & Shop celebrates remodel
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Stop & Shop on Lincoln Street in Holyoke held its grand opening as the newly remodeled location will offer more variety for its customers. The new remodel includes a fresh new look for the produce and bakery departments as well as over 300 new products across the store. Some of which include popular Puerto Rican and Latin American favorites and Asian meal starters and marinades. Also added was an expanded grab-and-go area for prepared foods. A $91K salary is needed to afford rent in the Seattle area
You have to make nearly $91,000 per year to afford the typical monthly rent in the Seattle metropolitan area, according to a new report. Why it matters: That's about 23% higher than what a Seattle-area household would have needed to earn five years ago, per the analysis from Zillow. It's also about $10,000 more than the income needed to afford the typical rent nationwide, Zillow found. What they did: Zillow assumed that rent should take up no more than 30% of household income — a common standard for calculating affordability. Zoom in: By that measure, affording the typical Seattle area-rent — which came in at $2,271 in April — requires an annual income of $90,840. That's the 11th-highest income needed among the dozens of U.S. metros analyzed by Zillow. Yes, but: The median household income in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area was $110,744 in 2023 — well above what is needed to afford the typical monthly rent, per Zillow's analysis. That said, a single person may be in for more of a struggle. Census data pegged the per capita income in Seattle at $82,508 in 2023. What they're saying: "Housing costs have surged since pre-pandemic, with rents growing quite a bit faster than wages," Orphe Divounguy, senior economist at Zillow, said in a news release.
