Jedd Fisch has high hopes for Washington's future

USA Today27-01-2025
Jedd Fisch used his first season as the Washington Huskies' head coach to build a solid foundation around the player he's repeatedly called the future face of the program, quarterback Demond Williams Jr.
The freshman started the last two games of the season and dazzled in Washington's 35-34 loss to Louisville in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl with 374 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air, with an additional 48 yards and a score on the ground, which proved that the Huskies have a strong building block at the game's most important position.
In an interview with KOMO News' Niko Tamurian, Fisch had a lot to say about the core he expects to lead the way for his team in 2025.
'I felt great about the fact that in Demond's second start ever, he had 5 touchdowns, four in the air and one on the ground,' he said of the Sun Bowl. 'Jonah Coleman, Adam Mohammed, and Jordan Washington all playing and coming back next year. Denzel Boston not being able to play the fourth quarter of the game, but the amount of production we've gotten from Denzel, having him as a key part for next year.'
'Decker DeGraaf continues to make plays, we have Quentin Moore coming back, and [USC transfer] Kade Eldridge coming in. You start looking at the offensive line, Maximus McCree [played his first game in almost two months], and all the youth out there, Landen Hatchett played his first game at center.'
Washington has also made an effort to improve in the trenches through the transfer portal, bringing in two experienced transfers, Kansas State tackle Carver Willis, and Hatchett's older brother Geirean, who returned after a year at Oklahoma.
Fisch also has some high hopes for his defense under new coordinator Ryan Walters.
'What we plan on getting done with [Isaiah] Ward, [Zach] Durfee, and [Russell] Davis, then bringing in guys with [Ephesians] Prysock and Tacario Davis on the perimeter, Makell [Esteen] coming back and Vince Holmes, I just feel like we have a really, really good team right now that wants to be good, we've added a lot of parts, we've added a lot of people. We also have a ton of freshmen and we're excited, we've got a 20-game win streak [at home], we've got to continue to sell out, and then we've got to go on the road and start getting some wins.'

Mets place catcher Francisco Alvarez on injured list with thumb sprain

The New York Mets placed catcher Francisco Alvarez on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right thumb UCL sprain. The move was retroactive to Monday and deprives the Mets of a power bat as they seek to solidify their playoff position. Alvarez was hurt sliding into second base during Sunday night's victory over Seattle in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He did not travel with the team for Tuesday's series opener at Washington, instead returning to New York to be evaluated. The Mets said Alvarez would be re-evaluated in 10 to 14 days for a potential return. Since his return from a monthlong stint in the minors, Alvarez is batting .323 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 21 games. The Mets recalled catcher Hayden Sanger from Triple-A Syracuse. New York also released right-hander Paul Blackburn. The big-spending Mets have struggled in August to fall 5 1/2 games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East entering Tuesday. They had a one-game lead over Cincinnati for the final NL wild-card spot. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

Mariners outfielder Víctor Robles suspended 10 games by MLB after throwing bat at pitcher in minors

Seattle Mariners outfielder Víctor Robles was issued a 10-game suspension by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for throwing his bat at pitcher during a minor league game. Robles was on a rehab assignment with Seattle's Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma. Up against Las Vegas Aviators pitcher Joey Estes in the third inning, Robles was hit by a pitch near his head in the right shoulder. Robles then threw his bat at Estes and ran toward the pitcher. Held back by the umpire and teammates, he was ejected from the game. As he left the game, Robles continued to lash out and actually threw packs of sunflower seeds from the dugout onto the field. The nine-year MLB veteran later apologized on social media for his actions, saying that the frustrations of recently losing his mother and getting hit by pitches four previous times during his rehab assignment fueled his outburst. "Coming off a long rehab and being away from the game for most of the season has been physically and mentally challenging," he said. "Adding to that, the recent passing of my mother has been incredibly hard, and I've been doing my best to hold it together. That's not an excuse, but some context I feel you deserve to understand where I'm coming from. "Getting hit 5 times in 15 at-bats added to that pressure, and I reacted in a way I'm not proud of. This game means the world to me, and so do the people who play it. I respect every one of you — my teammates, the opposing players, and everyone in this league. Additionally, Robles was hit by a pitch last season from Estes when he was playing for the Athletics. Robles has been on the injured list since April 7 with a fracture in his left shoulder. He went down with the injury while making a leaping catch and colliding with the netting in right-field foul territory at San Francisco's Oracle Park. Robles' suspension will begin once he is reinstated off the injured list, as it must actually be served with the Mariners. It's unclear how long his stint with Tacoma will last. He is expected to appeal his suspension, too. In his two seasons with Seattle, Robles is batting .319/.376/.447 with 23 doubles, four home runs, 29 RBI and 33 stolen bases in 308 plate appearances. He'll rejoin a Mariners team that is competing with the Houston Astros for the AL West lead and currently holds one of the league's three wild-card playoff spots.
