Foreign students feel at home celebrating Aidiladha in Malaysia

JOHOR BARU: As Muslims across Malaysia celebrate Aidiladha on Saturday (June 7), many international students are observing the meaningful occasion far from home, yet finding warmth, connection, and a sense of belonging in what they now consider their second home. For students like Muhammad Habibullah from Nigeria, who is currently studying at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), this year marks his third Aidiladha celebration in Malaysia. He said the warmth and acceptance he has received from Malaysians have helped ease the homesickness. "Even though we miss our families back home, Malaysia offers a wonderful atmosphere, it feels like we're celebrating with a bigger family, filled with diverse experiences. "Malaysia is not just a second home, it has truly become home for me,' said the 37-year-old, who is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical Engineering, when met by Bernama today. For Mohammed Raza Asfak Chidimar, 25, from Gujarat, India, who is pursuing a Master of Science (Data Science) at UTM, celebrating Aidiladha in Malaysia has been a heartwarming experience despite being away from his parents. "People here are very welcoming, especially at UTM. The university community makes a genuine effort to treat international students fairly and with kindness,' he said. "Malaysia truly feels like a second home. While the culture is slightly different, the essence of Aidiladha - the values of faith, sacrifice, and unity - remains the same,' he said. Local student Izham Syafarin Akhir Ruddin, 21, from Perak, was also unable to return home for Aidiladha this year due to academic commitments and looming assignment deadlines. "This is my first time celebrating Aidiladha without my family. Honestly, I don't feel alone at UTM because the university always makes sure students are included during festive occasions,' said the Bachelor of Psychology and Human Resource Development student. Earlier, more than 600 students at UTM received food donations in conjunction with Aidiladha, courtesy of the Yayasan Raja Zarith Sofiah Negeri Johor (YRZSNJ). YRZSNJ chief executive officer Hishamuddin Abdul Rahim said the contribution was a personal gift from Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia and Chancellor of UTM. "This gesture is part of a tradition observed during both Aidilfitri and Aidiladha, where Her Majesty graciously distributes food to students. It helps ease their homesickness and allows them to celebrate the festival joyfully with their friends,' he said. UTM deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Ali Selamat expressed gratitude for the royal contribution, noting its significance for students unable to return home for the celebration. "At UTM, approximately 70 per cent of our students are locals, while the rest are international. We are truly thankful to Her Majesty for the generous gift, which allows students to experience the joy of togetherness during Aidiladha,' said Ali, who is also deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International). - Bernama

117 members of Kenyalang Park Community Association receive angpows

KUCHING (May 19): A total of 117 members of the Kenyalang Park Community Association (KPCA) aged 73 and above were given 'angpows' on Saturday night. The eldest male and female, aged 97 and 95 respectively, received angpows worth RM1,000 each during the 'Respecting the Elderly' dinner hosted by the association at its KPCA Hall here. Its president Penghulu Tan Heng Kee said gifting angpows has been part of the association's annual activities held in appreciation of the contributions from its elderly members. He noted that the number of elderly members had been on the rise, while applications for awards granted for members' children who excelled in public examinations had gradually reduced. 'This goes to show that we are seeing less youth members,' he said. The dinner was officiated by Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who represented Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. Heng Kee said it was high time for the association to find ways to attract more young people to join as members, so as to carry on their community services. He said the dinner was an avenue for extending appreciation and respect to the elderly members, who had contributed towards nation-building. According to him, the association has been upholding the tradition of caring for the society and servicing the community since its inauguration in 1977. 'After 48 years, we remain committed in providing community services. What we are enjoying today is the fruit of all the hard work done by the generations before us.' Heng Kee said showing appreciation to parents should not be confined to special occasions but through daily routine such as companionship and caring. He added that the majority of the elderly members needed greetings and companionship the most. He also thanked the association's honorary president Datuk Tan Guek Kee for being the dinner's core sponsor as well as other major sponsors who made the gathering a success. Meanwhile, Wee urged the younger generation to fulfil their filial duty and not to wait till it is too late to do so. 'The love from our parents is selfless and they never ask for anything in return. Regardless of what age we are, parents remain the warmest and most reliable support,' he said. He reminded youngsters that their parents would appreciate companionship, a phone call and even a warm hug. Wee said Kuching South City Council would continue to provide better welfare for the elderly group by organising programmes that benefit the elders in line with creating a liveable and caring environment. angpows elderly Kenyalang Park Community Association lead Tan Heng Kee

Stampin Resettlement Scheme recreation park set for further upgrades

Yap (second left) in discussion with MBKS officers on the scope of works and bill of quantities for the park's latest RTP project. KUCHING (May 16): The recreation park at Lorong 2, Stampin Resettlement Scheme here is set to undergo further upgrading through an allocation of RM100,000. Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said the upgrade, funded through his Rural Transformation Project (RTP) allocation, follows the successful completion of an RTP initiative nine months ago at the same park, involving the construction of a futsal court. 'The new allocation of RM100,000 will fund the construction of a new pickleball court, a spectator platform for the futsal court, and the installation of new exercise equipment for park visitors to enjoy,' he said yesterday. 'The addition of a pickleball court, improved viewing areas, and modern exercise equipment will encourage a healthier and more active lifestyle among residents.' Yap, who earlier visited the park with Kuching South City Council (MBKS) officers to oversee the implementation of the new project, said he has also requested the council to assist in repainting the surface of the futsal court. He explained that the court surface has experienced significant wear-and-tear due to over-usage since its completion. The assemblyman said the approval of RTP projects is part of his efforts to deliver systematic and people-centred development in Kota Sentosa, providing accessible, high-quality public amenities for the local community. He also expressed his gratitude to MBKS for their cooperation in facilitating the smooth implementation of the RTP projects, and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that government allocations directly benefit the community. lead RTP stampin resettlement scheme upgrading Wilfred Yap
