JOHOR BAHRU: A retiree lost RM459,000 after falling victim to an online stock investment scam. Johor Bahru Selatan police chief, ACP Raub Selamat, said based on the report lodged by the 73-year-old man yesterday, the scam is believed to have begun in December last year when he received an unsolicited investment offer via WhatsApp from an unknown number. 'The victim was added to a WhatsApp group called 'PJT Academy', which claimed to provide stock trading lessons using an app known as 'USMSG'. 'The suspect allegedly promoted an investment scheme said to operate in Malaysia and China, with returns of between 10 and 200 percent,' he said in a statement. He added that, lured by the promise of high returns, the victim made 23 fund transfers amounting to RM459,000 from his HSBC account to 10 different bank accounts between Jan 10 and April 17 this year. He said the victim initially received a return of RM18,360, which encouraged him to continue investing. However, after being asked to pay a 'processing fee' to withdraw further profits, the victim failed to receive the promised returns. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment, caning and a fine upon conviction. Raub cautioned the public not to be easily swayed by investment advertisements on social media that promise unusually high returns, and urged individuals to verify the legitimacy of such schemes with the Securities Commission Malaysia and Bank Negara Malaysia. He also encouraged the public to follow the official social media channels of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for the latest updates on commercial scam tactics. Russia launches major attack on Ukraine, killing 5
KYIV, UKRAINE: Russia unleashed a barrage of missiles, drones and bombs across Ukraine early Saturday, killing five people as it retaliated for a brazen attack on air bases days earlier. The Kremlin has accelerated its attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks, while the latest ceasefire negotiations have failed to broker an end to the three-year war. The Ukrainian air force said Russia had fired 206 drones and nine missiles and added that 'the air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defense Forces'. In Ukraine's second largest city Kharkiv, Mayor Igor Terekhov counted 48 Iranian-made drones, two missiles and four guided bombs before dawn and said the attack was unprecedented. The northeastern city of some 1.4 million residents is located less than 50 kilometres from the Russian border. - Unprecedented attack - 'Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack since the beginning of the full-scale war,' Terekhov posted on Telegram around 4:40 am (0140 GMT), adding that drones were still buzzing overhead. The Russian strikes pummelled homes and apartment blocks, killing at least three people and wounding 17 more, the mayor said. A woman was also pulled alive from the rubble of a high-rise building. Kharkiv region Governor Oleg Synegubov said the wounded included two children. 'Medical personnel are providing the necessary assistance,' he wrote. Kharkiv was already reeling from an attack on Thursday that wounded at least 18 people, including four children. In the southern port city of Kherson, Russian shelling killed a couple and damaged two high-rise buildings, regional Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said. In the central Dnipropetrovsk region, governor Sergiy Lysak said Ukrainian forces had repelled 27 drones and two missiles overnight, but two women aged 45 and 88 were injured. Rescuers in the western city of Lutsk, near the Polish border, meanwhile discovered a second fatality from Friday's strikes, describing the victim as a woman in her 20s. The aerial bombardments come days after Ukraine launched a brazen attack well beyond the frontlines, damaging nuclear-capable military planes at Russian air bases and prompting vows of revenge from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia's defence ministry meanwhile said Saturday that 36 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles had been downed across a wide swath of territory. Ukraine has been pushing for an unconditional and immediate 30-day truce, issuing its latest proposal during peace talks in Istanbul on Monday. But Russia, which now controls around one-fifth of Ukraine's territory, has repeatedly rejected such offers to end its three-year war. The Kremlin said on Friday the Ukraine war was 'existential' for Russia. - Ceasefire hopes dim - The comments are Moscow's latest to dampen hopes for a breakthrough amid a flurry of meetings between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, as well as telephone calls between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, aimed at stopping the fighting. 'For us it is an existential issue, an issue on our national interest, safety, on our future and the future of our children, of our country,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, responding to remarks by Trump on Thursday comparing Moscow and Kyiv to brawling children. Ahead of the talks this week in Istanbul, an audacious Ukrainian drone attack damaged nuclear-capable military planes at Russian air bases, including thousands of kilometres behind the front lines in Siberia. Putin had told Trump he would retaliate for the brazen operation, 18 months in the planning, in which Ukraine smuggled more than 100 small drones into Russia, parked them near Russian air bases and unleashed them in a coordinated attack. Putin has issued a host of sweeping demands on Ukraine if it wants to halt the fighting. They include completely pulling troops out of four regions claimed by Russia, but which its army does not fully control, an end to Western military support, and a ban on Ukraine joining NATO. Syed Ahsan said Pakistan, Asean's sectoral dialogue partner since 1993, has long valued its engagement with the regional bloc and looks forward to deepening cooperation. "The matter has been discussed between the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Prime Minister of Malaysia,' he said at a media briefing here, Friday (June 6). He added that Pakistan views Asean as a key platform for promoting regional peace and stability, fostering economic cooperation, and advancing shared development. In October last year, media reports quoted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as saying that Pakistan has Malaysia's full support in its bid to become a full dialogue partner of Asean. Meanwhile, Pakistan also Anwar's offer to mediate in the Kashmir conflict, citing his respected standing and close ties with both India and Pakistan as key to easing tensions in the region. Syed Ahsan said Anwar's good relations with the leadership of both countries could play a constructive role in easing tensions between the South Asian neighbours. "Anwar expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue between the two countries after being informed of the postponement of the Pakistani Prime Minister's visit on May 9,' he said. Syed Ahsan highlighted that the call between Anwar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had taken place in the first week of May, just days before fighting broke out in Kashmir. Sabah GLCs mostly ‘blackholes'

Kota Kinabalu: A majority of the 250-odd Sabah GLCs (Government-linked companies) are like 'blackholes' sucking away financial resources from Sabah. But there are a few bright stars. 'These statutory bodies and GLCs produced only RM143m dividends to the Sabah Government, of which RM50m was from SMJ Energy. Only a small number can generate dividends for the government. The performance of the rest is pathetic,' said Datuk John Lo, a former banker and now in the Sabah Economic Action Council (SEAC). Advertisement The other profitable GLCs include Sabah Foundation's subsidiary Innoprise, Sabah Energy Corporation, Sogip, Sogdc, POIC Lahad Datu, Suria Capital, Sabah Credit Corporation and Sawit Kinabalu. Lo was a guest panel speaker at the NGO Sabar – Kopi Tiam Council podcast on 'Oversight & Reform of government-Linked Companies (GLCs) Transparency, accountability & Corruption Prevention session, recently. 'Most are either non-performing or underperforming,' Lo said and pointed out that GLCs hold many monopolistic rights for example, cement [Sabah Cement Industries], ports [Suria, POIC Sandakan and POIC Lahad Datu], water [Jetama] and fishing landing rights [Safma]. They have been granted very cheap but extremely prime land, most of them at RM1,000 premium. [Innoprise, SUDC, subsidiary of Sedco, Suria, SICC, Sabah Energy, TAED.]. Advertisement Others have been vast acreage of valuable agricultural land for free or at nominal premium. [Sawit Kinabalu, KPD, Sabah Softwood.] Then there are those who have been granted cheap and valuable land for industrial park [KKIP, Sogip, POIC Sandakan and POIC Lahad Datu, Asian Supply Base in Labuan] or granted concession rights in oil and gas, river and sea sand [Sabah Energy, Sabah Gas, SMJ Energy, Sedco]. GLCs are also into hotels, resorts and jungle resorts [Innoprise, Sedco and Sabah Air] or granted exclusive JV preference with Sabahan and non-Sabahan companies. 'Most significantly, many GLCs have become a huge liability and drag on Sabah's economic growth. Allowing GLCs to continue without proper governance will result in serious economic consequences. Sabah can never catch up,' he said. In most cases the political appointments of chairmen, board of directors and senior management have been inappropriate. 'GLCs are still bleeding losses year in year out. Sabahans are subsiding these losses that have easily run into billions the last 35 years. The accumulated losses are staggering,' he said. What is worse is that some of these GLCs have sold or entered into JVs in many valuable assets like prime commercial and agriculture land, buildings, monopolies and concessions, most of which are lopsided against Sabah. These GLCs have taken huge loans from the government and banks [especially SDB] that they cannot service or repay, often forcing Sabah taxpayers to bail them out. 'They enter into many lopsided JV agreements against the interests of Sabah. They have the greatest number of failed JV projects that need rescue by 'white knights'. 'These billions of dividends can be tax free and can transform Sabah's economic ownership back to Sabahans. The greatest impact is job creation. If each GLC, on average, can create an additional 100 jobs, there will be additional 25,000 jobs!' said Lo. 'This money could have been used for the hard-core poor, repair or investment in infrastructures, health, scholarships or to build two or three universities. 'The GLCs have many JV projects that are suspended or non-start for years.' 'SDB's revamp is showing encouraging results. Keep an eye on Sabah Energy as it will be the new performing star.' Lo was pleased that Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has appointed suitable Sabahans to head some boards and management e.g. SDB, SMJ Energy, Sabah Energy, Sogip, Sogdc and the latest, a new Group GM for Sedco. Hajiji has appointed advisors on the economy, oil and gas, energy, tourism and international affairs. Notably, he said state Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun has appointed a task force on GLCs. Masidi has also appointed an oversight committee for GLCs. 'Hopefully, the revamp of GLCs will lead some of them to be listed on Bursa. Bursa will impose demanding and stringent governance requirements on these GLCs. 'GLCs that have independent board of directors and professional management appointed by Hajiji and Masidi are turning around with noticeable improvements. 'It is imperative that future Sabah governments continue to revamp, rationalise the GLCs. 'Focusing on and sorting out the mess in Sabah's GLCs is a critical economic issue for every Sabahan, especially for the present young generation and their children. These GLCs are eroding away their future. 'I hope all Sabahans, every man, every woman, every voter, after listening to Sabar's podcast, will support the reformation, transformation and rationalization of Sabah's GLCs.
