Madrid Derby: Champions League Edition

Yahoo04-03-2025

These local rivals always produce a banger of a game, ending either in a close match, or a lopsided victory. The last time these two teams faced off was on the 9th of February 2025. Julián Alvarez scored a penalty on the first half to put Atlético the lead. However, just minutes into the second half, Mbappé pulled one back to equalize the game for Real Madrid. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
From a statistical standpoint Real Madrid were in control, boasting 61% possession along with 92% pass accuracy.
This Round of 16 fixture holds significant importance for Real Madrid, and specifically for Kylian Mbappé. Despite all his individual accolades, he has yet to lift the coveted Champions League Trophy. The first leg will be hosted by Real Madrid at the Santiato Bernabéu, in which we all expect Mbappé eager to bring this victory home.
Atlético Madrid, on the other hand, will be starting with confidence. They recently held La Liga leaders Barcelona to a 4-4 draw, which is an achievement most teams have not pulled off this season. Even Real has yet to win, or at least draw, Atlético in either La Liga or The Supercopa.
One of Atlético's standout performers this season has been Julián Alvarez. He seems to thrive against top clubs, scoring crucial goals against the likes of Barcelona, Leverkusen, and Real in their last encounter. His ability to step up in these types of games makes him my player to watch in this tie.
Real's man to watch has to be Mbappé. We all know about his speed, his finishing, and his ability to turn games on to favor his side. This could be the game where he takes a decisive step as a number 9 to fulfill his Champions League aspirations.
Any Madrid Derby will never lack drama, and I don't see this one being any different. The intensity often boils over. A player who has historically struggled in this fixture is Vinícius Jr. The Brazilian has just one goal in 15 matches against Atlético, whose players often provoke him to get a reaction. Most of the time, it does work. Vini will need to control his emotions, or else Mbappé will have to carry him like a turtle shell on his back. Turtle Power.
It's difficult to bet against Real Madrid, especially when it comes to the Champions League. The sheer number of CL trophies in their cabinet speaks for itself. That aside, with Atletico Madrid's recent form, I am unable to tell who takes the lead on this first leg. I see the game at a 2-2 draw at full-time. Everything will then be decided on a nail-biting second leg at the Metropolitano.

Looking at 4 wings Boston Celtics could pick in 2025 NBA Draft

For now, the Celtics' next agenda of the offseason is the 2025 NBA Draft. They hold the No. 28 and No. 32 picks in the upcoming draft, set for June 25-26. So they'll have some options at the end of the first round and the top of the second. The C's could end up making some trades like they've done in the past, but for now, they're armed with two draft picks. MassLive already looked at four potential guards who could be around when the Celtics are on the clock for the draft. Advertisement Now, here's a closer look at four potential wings the Celtics could pick: Drake Powell, North Carolina 2024-25 stats: 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 25.5 minutes in 34 games. Shot 48.3% from the field and 37.9% on 3-pointers. There was some thought that Powell could return to college, but he was firm in that he was staying in the NBA Draft process. Powell was a one-and-done product after playing a single season with the Tar Heels as he won't turn 20 until later this year. The counting stats don't pop off the page as took just 5.7 shots per game at North Carolina. However, he had some eye-popping numbers coming out of the draft combine. Powell was measured with a 7-foot wingspan. Notably, he also came in at 37.5 inches standing vertical leap and his max vertical leap was 43 inches. Advertisement The athleticism and defensive potential are both there. His 3-point shooting number looks solid, though it was only on 2.6 attempts per game, and he shot 64.8% on free throws. Still, that's an intriguing prospect at this point in the draft. Adou Thiero, Arkansas 2024-25 stats: 15.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 27.5 minutes in 27 games. Shot 54.5% from the field and 25.6% on 3-pointers. Thiero comes in with some versatility and a solid frame as he was measured in at 6-foot-6 with a 7-foot wingspan. He's an athletic wing and slasher who could fit well with the Celtics. He started his career at Kentucky for the first two years before transferring to Arkansas, where he was a major contributor. He turned 21 last month, so he's not a super old prospect. Advertisement The knock on him is his shooting as that's just not a part of his game at this point. Thiero does a lot of things well but that's the one area the Celtics would like to see some improvement if they go this route. Thiero also shot 68.6% on 6.5 free throw attempts per game last season, so that doesn't look super promising there either. Hugo Gonzalez, Real Madrid (Spain) 2024-25 stats: 5.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, 0.9 assists in 14.8 minutes in 60 games in Liga ACB, per EuroBasket. Shot 44.5% from the field and 28% on 3-pointers. Gonzalez is one of the more intriguing prospects of this draft considering his age and where he's playing. Gonzalez just turned 19 years old and already playing for Real Madrid. He didn't get much playing time at the beginning of the year, though he's seen some more recently. Advertisement One thing about Gonzalez is that he can't go through predraft workouts because Real Madrid just started its playoff run. Considering it's the No. 1 seed, the playoffs could go for a while ahead of the draft. There's a lot to like about his game on both sides of the court, though he'll need to grow into his frame. But considering his age, there's some intrigue there too for NBA front offices. Alex Toohey, Sydney Kings (Australia) 2024-25 stats: 10.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 22.9 minutes in 30 games, per the NBL. Shot 45.2% on field goals. Toohey was committed to Gonzaga but elected to stay closer to home in Australia, where he's developed into a potential NBA draft pick. He was measured in at nearly 6-foot-8 at the draft combine with a 6-foot-11 wingspan. So he brings size and had a maximum vertical leap of 31.5 inches. Advertisement Toohey has shown he can get out in transition but shooting is another question mark. He turned 21 years old last month, so he's not super young but also not that old. Will need to bulk up a bit more to play in the NBA game but can be a versatile defender with his frame. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.

Erling Haaland career goals, Premier League records, stats, 2024-25 season video highlights

Erling Haaland had an incredible start to the 2024-25 season, even by his own very high standards, but he cooled off considerably and — unsurprisingly — so did his club. Haaland scored a goal within 18 minutes of his Premier League season debut, as Man City won at Chelsea, and the goals kept on coming for the 24-year-old Norwegian. Advertisement [ WATCH: Haaland scores absurd back-to-goal marker in UCL ] In Week 2 he scored a hat trick against Ipswich, then grabbed another hat trick against West Ham in Week 3 to take his tally to seven goals in three games to kick off the new campaign. Week 4? It took 20 minutes for him to score versus Brentford. Week 5? Less time. My word. [ MORE: Premier League table — Standings from 2024-25 season ] The 24-year-old Norwegian's Premier League Golden Boot tally sits at two and he was a heavy favorite to make it three. But he hit another Premier League slump in December, and Mohamed Salah passed him to hold the league-leading haul. Advertisement Haaland has 85 Premier League goals in 97 league appearances, as he's now 15 goals away from hitting 100 in the English top flight. Presumably — that history will come in the 2025-26 season. Ronaldo vs. Yamal: Comparing their careers ahead of UEFA Nations League final

Since Lamine Yamal burst onto the scene in 2023, he's drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi, who many consider to be the greatest soccer player of all time. But ahead of Spain's meeting with Portugal in Sunday's UEFA Nations League final (3 p.m. ET on FOX), all eyes are on Yamal and Messi's career rival Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo, 40, is 23 years older than Yamal, 17, but Yamal's international résumé already stacks up well against one of the greatest strikers of all time. Here's an in-depth look at the two stars of the UEFA Nations League final: Yamal at 17 Yamal broke a number of records at Euro 2024. At 16 years old, Yamal became the youngest player in Euros history to appear in a match (16 years and 338 days old) and followed that up by becoming the youngest-ever player to score in a Euros match (16 years and 362 days old). He ended the tournament with one goal and four assists, including an assist in the final. Not only is he the youngest player to record an assist in a major tournament (17 years and 1 day old), but his four assists are tied for the most in a single edition of the Euros. He was named the Young Player of the Tournament. Yamal followed his breakout tournament with a monster club season with FC Barcelona. Yamal recorded 18 goals and 25 assists in all competitions with Barcelona this past season (55 appearances). For context, Ronaldo had five goals and six assists in his age-17 season (31 appearances). In fact, Ronaldo didn't have a season with more than 15 goals until his age-21 season. Barcelona won the 2024-25 LaLiga title with Yamal leading the league in assists (13). He's won four trophies at the club level with Barcelona and one major international trophy with Spain. If he wins the UEFA Nations League title on Sunday, he'll have as many international trophies as Ronaldo does at 40. Ronaldo has won the Euros (2016) and Nations League (2019). Ronaldo at 40 As bright as the start of Yamal's career has been, he has a lot of work to do to catch up to Ronaldo. With a goal against Germany in the UEFA Nations League semifinals, Ronaldo extended his all-time record for men's international goals to 137 goals. He broke the record as a 36-year-old by scoring twice in a European qualifier against Ireland in September 2021. That took his tally to 111 goals in 180 games for Portugal, surpassing the previous mark by Iran's Ali Daei. In 2022, Ronaldo became the first men's player to score in five different World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022). Brazil's Marta and Canada's Christine Sinclair have done it in the Women's World Cup. Ronaldo also holds the all-time record for men's international appearances with 220, which is 28 more than the next active player on the list, Lionel Messi. The player with the second-most international appearances, Bader Al-Mutawa of Kuwait, retired from international play in 2022. The one knock on Ronaldo's stacked résumé is his lack of silverware at the international level, although he did lead Portugal to the Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League crown. But his success at the club level makes up for it. Not only does he have five Champions League titles to his name — which is tied for the second-most of all time — but he's also the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 141 goals, including 67 knockout stage goals and three goals in the tournament's finals. In total, Ronaldo has won 31 club trophies in his career across four different leagues. Individually, his five Ballon d'Or awards are the second-most of all time behind Lionel Messi (8).
