GCC Stresses Importance Of Cooperation With ASEAN, China In Facing Global Challenges
By Muhd Anwaruddin Abdul Wahab
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) acknowledges the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation and forging strategic partnerships with ASEAN and China, given the current international situation marked by economic challenges, environmental threats, and the need to accelerate geopolitical transformation.
Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, who is also President of the current session of the GCC Supreme Council, said the GCC-China and ASEAN relationships have become viable and successful models of cooperation based on shared interests, expertise, and the development of long-term institutional frameworks.
His Royal Highness said the first GCC-China Summit held in Riyadh in 2022 was a strategic turning point that established a comprehensive partnership to address economic, technological, environmental and developmental issues.
Meanwhile, the first GCC-ASEAN Summit, held in Riyadh in 2023, served as a successful platform for cooperation and integration between the two sides.
'Today, the first GCC-ASEAN-China Summit held here is a natural evolution of the initiatives launched in Riyadh and has opened new horizons for trilateral integration, linking the world's two most dynamic and effective regions in the global economy, value chains and production,' the Crown Prince said at the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit here today.
Sheikh Sabah Khaled explained that the GCC highly values the launch of the Joint Action Plan for Strategic Dialogue with China for the 2023-2027 period and believes it lays a solid foundation to enhance cooperation in the fields of renewable energy, technology, education, health, artificial intelligence and scientific research.
The GCC also emphasised the importance of the 2024-2028 Strategic Cooperation Framework between the GCC and ASEAN as a platform for establishing institutional mechanisms to strengthen this partnership, which has ultimately formed a trilateral framework between the GCC, ASEAN and China, His Royal Highness said.
Economic indicators show steady growth in GCC trade with ASEAN and China.

Don't politicise deaths of bullying victims, Anwar warns
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded all parties not to turn the death of any bullying victim into a political weapon. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that using the death of a bullying victim for deception and incitement is a completely unacceptable act. "As for social media, we regulate it, but there are limits. For example, most recently, someone claiming to be a pathologist gave an account of (the post-mortem on Zara Qairina Mahathir), and this poisoned the minds of millions of people, to the point that my friends, wife and colleagues asked me, 'What is this?' "The person (Zara Qairina) has already died, and then we turn this into a political weapon to attack others. If it were true, that would be one thing - but how can we play up (this issue) in a way that makes use of someone's death for lies and incitement?" he said. Anwar said this when delivering his address at the Prime Minister's Monthly Assembly with staff of the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) here Monday (Aug 18). - Bernama MORE TO COME

Similarly, Taiwan posted a net inflow of US$90.4 million, marking an eighth consecutive week and the longest foreign buying streak since the start of available data in 2021. In contrast, India recorded the region's largest outflow at -US$347.8 million, extending its losing streak to five weeks for the first time since March 2025. Nonetheless, despite the foreign withdrawals, S&P Global Ratings upgraded India's long-term sovereign credit rating to "BBB' from "BBB-', the first upgrade in 18 years, citing strong economic growth, improved monetary policy credibility and sustained fiscal consolidation. Ringgit opens firmer against US dollar amid rate cut expectations
Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8 am, the local currency traded at 4.2050/2260, up from Friday's close of 4.2085/2155. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened slightly firmer against the US dollar on Monday as market sentiment leaned towards a potential US interest rate cut. At 8 am, the local currency traded at 4.2050/2260, up from Friday's close of 4.2085/2155. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted growing expectations for a September rate reduction by the US Federal Reserve. 'Given that consumer spending accounted for more than two-thirds of the US economy, the case for a September rate cut is gaining more steam,' he told Bernama. The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 58.6 points in August from 61.7 points the previous month. Other indicators, including the Current Condition Index and the Expectation Index, also declined in August. 'This suggests that consumer spending will likely weaken, while higher prices due to increased import tariffs may prevent them from splurging,' he added. The ringgit could test the psychological RM4.20 level against the US dollar today. A perceived delay in Fed rate cuts has weakened the US dollar in the near term, with the US Dollar Index hovering at 97.850 points. Against major currencies, the ringgit strengthened except against the euro, where it depreciated to 4.9224/9470 from Friday's 4.9185/9267. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8557/8701 from 2.8653/8702 and gained versus the British pound to 5.6999/7283 from 5.7050/7145. The local currency also performed well against regional peers. It appreciated against the Singapore dollar to 3.2777/2944 from 3.2820/2877 and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 12.9361/13.0091 from 12.9760/13.0032. The ringgit improved against the Philippine peso to 7.36/7.41 from 7.37/7.39 and remained stable against the Indonesian rupiah at 260.0/261.4 * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
