SA-born Marlene Dumas breaks global record with R245 million painting sale
South African-born artist Marlene Dumas has shattered a global auction record after her 1997 painting Miss January sold for a jaw-dropping $13.6 million — more than R245 million.
The sale took place at a Christie's auction held at the Rockefeller Centre in New York, with the event also streamed live on Instagram and YouTube.
Dumas' painting currently holds the record for the most expensive painting ever sold by a living woman artist.
She surpassed the previous record held by British painter Jenny Saville, whose 1992 work Propped sold for £9.5 million (R228 million) at Sotheby's in London in 2018.
However, while Miss January sets a new benchmark for living female artists, Dumas still trails behind top-selling male artists like Jeff Koons, whose sculpture Rabbit (1986) sold for a staggering $91.07 million (R1.65 billion) in 2019.

Marlene Dumas' 'magnum opus'
Christie's Deputy Chairman of Post-War and Contemporary Art, Sara Friedlander, described Miss January as Dumas' 'magnum opus'.
'In this painting, Dumas triumphantly demonstrates a formal mastery of the woman's body while simultaneously freeing it from a tradition of subjection, upending normalised concepts of the female nude through the lens of a male-centric history,' Friedlander said in a post-auction statement.
Born in Cape Town in 1953, Dumas has lived in Amsterdam since 1976 and continues to exhibit her work at the Galleria Paul Andriesse, where she debuted in 1977.
She represented the Netherlands at the 1995 Venice Biennale and was featured in the central exhibition space of the Biennale again in 2015.
Her long list of accolades includes the Düsseldorf Art Prize (2007), the Rolf Schock Prize in Visual Arts (2011), the Johannes Vermeer Award (2012), and the Hans Theo Richter Prize for Drawing and Graphic Art (2017).

Harry and Meghan sign reduced deal with Netflix
LONDON - Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will continue to develop film and TV projects for Netflix but on more limited terms, the streaming giant announced Monday. The estranged British royal and his wife have worked with Netflix since 2020, producing documentary "Harry & Meghan" and lifestyle series "With Love, Meghan." The latter showcased the Duchess of Sussex as a thriving domestic maven, hosting guests, harvesting honey and mixing bath salts against an idyllic California backdrop. It has been extended for a second season, and a holiday special due in December, Netflix said. But while the pair's previous Netflix deal bought the streamer exclusive rights to their output, the new multi-year agreement is a "first look deal" In Hollywood parlance, this means Netflix has the right to say yes or no to a project before Harry and Meghan's media company Archewell Productions can shop it around other studios. Typically, first-look deals are less lucrative than exclusive deals, though they also provide producers with more flexibility. "We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the 'As ever' brand," said Meghan, referring to her recently re-branded line of lifestyle products including rose wine and apricot spreads. ‘Ladies first' at Zappas Women's Day bash
Zappas Restaurant celebrated Women's Day with a lively celebration on Saturday, featuring a world record attempt and a focus on 'old-school' gentlemanly respect for women. Restaurant manager Chrisna Oosthuizen said the event formed part of the eatery's month-long Ladies First campaign. For a whole month, her restaurant is embracing the 'Ladies First' theme, encouraging a nod to old-school courtesy with a world-record attempt. 'This is to remind the ladies that although we are in a man's world, we are still women. We should still be treated like women and with equality.' The goal was to gather at least 472 women in the bar at exactly 18:00. This would have made it the biggest gathering of women in one bar at the same time. All the women who turned out were treated to free punch, special menus, and souvenirs that would leave them feeling seen and appreciated during Women's Month. Although the turnout was spirited and the energy vibrant, they ultimately did not manage to break the record. 'This is not only about breaking a record but also about reclaiming space for women in an atmosphere that felt both celebratory and respectful, where they were the honoured guests,' she said. Attendee Kgomotso Madumo said the event was a welcome chance to relax. 'It's not every day that women get treated like queens for free. I came with my friends and we felt safe and appreciated. The free punch was a nice touch,' she said. Another guest, Karin van der Westhuizen, said she enjoyed the atmosphere and message behind the day. 'The idea of reminding men to be gentlemen is beautiful. In a world where violence against women is still so high, events like these are important for awareness and unity,' she said.
