NCAA to receive special citation in Collegiate Press Corps Awards Night for centennial season
The NCAA is set to be handed a special citation in honor of its 100 years of excellence in sports, producing outstanding student-athletes across various disciplines.
The country's oldest league is staging its Season 100 with a theme of "Siglo Uno: Inspiring Legacies", which saw several schools achieve historic milestones.
For one, Mapua University ended a long 33-year title drought in men's basketball with the likes of Clint Escamis, Cyrus Cuenco, Lawrence Mangubat, and Chris Hubilla conniving to beat De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in the finals.
The last time the Cardinals reigned supreme was in 1991, when head coach Randy Alcantara was still suiting up for the school together with Benny Cheng.
In men's volleyball, Arellano University captured its first-ever title led by Finals MVP Carl Berdal and other key players such as Adrian Villados, Anfernee Curamen, AC Guinto, Jiwen Sinuto, and Jake Pangilinan.
While it marked a historic breakthrough for the Chiefs, the Lady Blazers solidified their dominance by extending their championship dynasty in the women's division.
Mycah Go and Zam Nolasco fronted their four-peat run as they swept Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the finals that marked the first time the squad accomplished such a feat.
Season 100 also saw the success of the Perpetual Junior ALTAs with the talented crew hoisting the team's maiden crown in the juniors basketball division.
San Beda University, meanwhile, proved its caliber in other sports after claiming its third straight and 26th overall crown in men's football tournament, while its swimming team continued to dominate with a 21st straight championship in the men's division and an 11th consecutive crown in the women's category.
Later this month, the NCAA will host its first-ever esports tournament with Mobile Legends: Bang Bang serving as a special event.

KarlTzy accepts 'GOAT' status after steering Team Liquid to MSC glory
Karl 'KarlTzy' Nepomuceno has completed his decorated championship resume with the elusive MSC crown — the one title that had long evaded him. With it, the star jungler has finally embraced the GOAT label after years of sidestepping the conversation and letting his play do the talking as he finally captured the MSC title with Team Liquid Philippines. Team Liquid bucked a Game 1 hiccup en route to a decisive 4-1 victory over defending champion of Malaysia in the grand finals last Saturday. "Yes. If I have a lot of people backing me up, saying that I'm the GOAT, I'll agree with them right now," KarlTzy said. "I'm just really happy and really proud of myself that I became the GOAT." It has been a long journey for KarlTzy. He made his MPL debut way back in Season 2 in 2019 under the banner of Finesse Solid and was later selected to be part of the Philippines' gold medal team in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang debut in the Southeast Asian Games here in Manila. He was later acquired by Bren Esports, where he helped the team capture the MPL Philippines Season 6 title—a victory that marked the beginning of his meteoric rise. KarlTzy played a crucial role in Bren's historic title run in the M2 World Championship in 2021, claiming the MVP honors as the Philippines seized its first world title. Later that year, KarlTzy found his way to Echo Philippines where he initially teamed up with the likes of powerhouse names Tristan 'Yawi' Cabrera, Frediemar '3MarTzy' Serafico, and Ashley Marco "Killuash" Cruz. Under Team Liquid (formerly Echo) KarlTzy captured three more MPL titles in Season 11, 13, and 15, all while also winning the M4 World Championship crown in early 2023 after they swept Blacklist International in their all-Filipino finals showdown. MSC was the one trophy that always got away. KarlTzy and Echo came close to it in the 2023 edition in Cambodia, but the Philippine bets fell to eventual champion Onic Esports of Indonesia during their semifinals bout. Then again in 2024, Team Liquid fell short anew after absorbing a 1-3 loss to compatriot AP. Bren in the semifinals. This year, they shattered the curse with a flawless title run, putting an end to the Philippines' two-year MSC dry spell. "Hindi naging madali 'yung run namin dito sa EWC. Mapua shares pride in Cardinals' stand in World University Games
Mapua University shared its pride in representing the Philippines in the global stage. The Cardinals finished 14th overall in the World University Games held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany last July 16 to 27. "The Mapúa Cardinals is incredibly proud to have represented the Philippines in the recent FISU World University Games 2025 last July 16-27, 2025 in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. With over 8,000 student-athletes from over 100 countries representing various sports, our very own basketball team successfully bagged a win over Chile in a sweet 77-69 victory," the University said in its post. "This participation, which was also recognized by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), also serves as a strategic move for the team to foster camaraderie as they march into the upcoming NCAA Season 101." In the tournament, the Cardinals ended the group phase winless against Brazil, Czech Republic, and Poland. The NCAA defending champions also fell short against Lebanon, 73-67, in the quarterfinals. In the classification round, however, the Intramuros-based squad defeated Chile, 77-69, before falling to Argentina, 84-71. Letran reigns supreme in inaugural NCAA MLBB tournament

Colegio de San Juan de Letran overcame Jose Rizal University in the finals, 3-1, to clinch the title in the inaugural NCAA Season 100 Mobile Legends: Bang Bang tournament on Sunday at the Philippine Game Development Expo (PGDX). The Knights completed an unlikely title run, surviving Mapua University in the lower bracket finals before turning back the Heavy Bombers in the best-of-five championship round. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
