V.S. Achuthanandan, a leader who never forgot his roots

The Hindu21-07-2025
By the side of Pazhaya Nadakkavu Road at Paravur in Punnapra North grama panchayat in Alappuzha, Kerala, stands a modest house with a compound wall bearing a nameplate that reads 'V.S. Achuthanandan Velikkakathu'.
A pall of gloom has descended over Velikkakathu and the surrounding region following the death of V.S. Achuthanandan, fondly known as Sakhavu V.S. (Comrade V.S.) among the masses.
Hundreds visited the house in the hours following his demise at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram to pay their respects. Though Mr. Achuthanandan had not visited the house since 2019 due to health issues, people in the region continue to cherish fond memories of him.
'My father and V.S. were very close. We used to visit him whenever he was at home. He would ask about everything. He was very gentle and always willing to help. He cared for all of us,' says Sethulal, a neighbour.
No matter how busy he was, Mr. Achuthanandan would come to the Velikkakathu house for Thiruvonam. Whenever he was home, people from far and near would visit him, often seeking help and renewing old ties.
The house also assumed political significance in February 2015, when he returned there after walking out of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State conference in Alappuzha in protest against the scathing criticism directed at him by some delegates. He refused to meet the media and several sympathisers rushed to Velikkakathu, raising slogans in his support.
Apart from visiting Velikkakathu, Mr. Achuthanandan would also visit the Venthalathara house, located about a kilometre away. It was at Venthalathara that he was born and raised along with his brothers, V.S. Gangadharan and V.S. Purushothaman, and their sister, Aazhikutty. Both Gangadharan and Purushothaman have passed away. Aazhikutty still lives at Venthalathara.
'She (Aazhikutty) used to call Achuthanandan Annan (elder brother). He would gift her Onapudava (new clothes given as gifts) every Onam. However, due to health issues, they (Achuthanandan and Aazhikutty) had not seen each other for quite some time,' says Parameswaran, a relative.
According to Latheesh B. Chandran, a former member of his personal staff, the veteran leader shared a deep bond with his native place. 'He always stood with the poor and downtrodden. He was ready to listen to their problems and help resolve them,' Mr. Chandran says.
Local residents used to celebrate Mr. Achuthanandan's birthday by cutting a cake and distributing payasam.

Oppn adamant on demand over electoral roll revision debate, Rajya Sabha adjourned till 2 pm

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned until 2 p.m. on Tuesday following vocal protests and demands for immediate discussion on several contentious issues, including Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh announced the receipt of 24 notices under Rule 267, most of which pertained to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls undertaken in Bihar. The notices were submitted by members, including Ranjeet Ranjan, Shaktisinh Gohil, Syed Nasir Hussain, Rajani Ashokrao Patil, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Rajiv Shukla and Randeep Singh Surjewala (all from Congress), Sandeep Kumar Pathak (AAP), Manoj Jha (RJD), and others. The Deputy Chairman also informed the House that under the same rules, additional notices were submitted by CPI(M) MP Rita Pratap Banerjee and Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghosh, raising concerns over alleged discrimination against Bengali migrant workers in various states. A. Rahim (CPI-M), P. Santosh Kumar (CPI), and Josh K. Mani (Kerala Congress-M) sought a discussion on the "alleged and unjust" arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh. SP MP Ramjilal Suman demanded a debate on the "unprecedented and unexpected" resignation of the Rajya Sabha Chairman, while CPI(M) MP V. Sivadasan submitted a notice seeking deliberation on "India's trade agreement with the United Kingdom and its impact on the Indian economy". The Deputy Chairman informed the House that the notices did not conform to procedural requirements and were therefore declined. This led to sharp protests from the Opposition and disruption of proceedings. Amid the uproar, the Deputy Chairman urged members to honour their collective commitment to uphold the Parliamentary decorum, stating that Question Hour and Zero Hour had not been availed for several days due to repeated disruptions. The Deputy Chairman appealed to members to allow both segments to proceed uninterrupted. When the ruckus continued, he adjourned the House till 2 p.m. Earlier in the day, the House briefly turned its attention to a moment of national pride when the Deputy Chairman congratulated 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh for winning the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup. He described her achievement as a matter of great joy, noting that she had made the country proud by becoming India's first woman to win the title and the nation's 88th Grandmaster. Several parliamentary papers and committee reports were laid on the table. These included submissions from ministers Pankaj Choudhary, Anupriya Patel, Santanu Thakur, Harsh Malhotra, Ninubhai, and Bhupathi Raju Srinivas Verma. Shiv Sena-UBT MP Priyanka Chaturvedi tabled the 57th report of the Standing Committee on Communications in the 17th Lok Sabha, along with the seventh Action Taken Report concerning the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. BJP MP Ramji Bhai Harji Bhai Mokaria submitted reports from the Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs. BJP MP K. Lakshman laid reports from the Committee on Public Accounts, while party MP Iranna B Kadadi presented the 15th report related to the Ministry of Rural Development. Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary also placed an additional Standing Committee report before the House. An updated panel of Vice Chairpersons was announced. The House is scheduled to reconvene at 2 p.m., though tensions surrounding the Bihar electoral revision may continue to affect proceedings.

Discipline essential to a party's functioning: New CPI Ekm secy

KOCHI: In a move echoing the recent trend of youth leadership within Left politics, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has appointed N Arun, the state vice-president of the All India Students' Federation (AISF), as the new secretary of its Ernakulam district committee. He spoke on various issues including CPI-CPM conflicts and dissent within CPI in Kochi on Monday. Excerpts How do you feel stepping into the new role as district secretary? While continuing as the state vice-president of AISF, I'm taking up this new responsibility with confidence. The Left movement is going through both challenges and opportunities across the country. Our duty is to position ourselves as a creative, secular, and democratic alternative, combat all forms of communalism, maintain LDF unity, and popularise the government's pro-people policies. There have been tensions between CPI and CPM, especially in Vypeen. How do you view this? The issues in Vypeen are minor, mostly related to elections in some cooperative banks. These will be resolved. I'm confident we'll move forward as a united front, especially ahead of the local body elections. What about differences within the CPI? In any democratic setup, differences of opinion are natural. Currently, there are no such rifts within the district. All constituency conferences concluded peacefully. Even the district committee was elected unanimously.

Left parties to protest against power tariff hike on Aug 5

Vijayawada: The Communist Party of India (CPI) announced on Monday that the Left parties will organise statewide protests on August 5 to oppose the recent hike in electricity charges and the installation of smart meters across Andhra Pradesh. The demonstrations will be held under the banner of a united front of Left parties and civil society organisations, taking place in front of electricity offices in all 26 districts. The agitation also aims at demanding the cancellation of power purchase agreements signed with the Adani Group by the Andhra Pradesh government. During a virtual meeting with state and district-level leaders today, CPI State Secretary K. Ramakrishna called upon party cadres and affiliated organizations to mobilize on a large scale to ensure the protest serves as a powerful expression of public anger. 'This is not just a protest—it is a fight to protect the common people from unjust tariffs and corporate favoritism,' he asserted. The Zoom meeting, chaired by P. Harinath Reddy, was attended by senior CPI leaders including Muppalla Nageswara Rao (Assistant State Secretary), former MLC Jalli Wilson, Akkineni Vanaja, G. Eshwaraiah, P. Manohar Naidu, N. Lenin Babu, and G. Koteshwara Rao, among others. Ramakrishna stated that the protests will demand the government immediately roll back electricity tariff hikes, cancel smart meter installations, and terminate the Adani-linked power agreements, which were originally signed under the YSRCP government. Ramakrishna further pointed out that none of the NDA alliance partners—TDP, BJP, or Jana Sena—have spoken out against the tariff hikes. He criticised both the previous YSRCP and the current TDP governments for allegedly favoring corporate entities like Adani and the Lulu Group at the cost of public welfare. He also highlighted the reported failures of Lulu malls in countries like Singapore and Malaysia, questioning the rationale behind leasing valuable RTC land in Vijayawada to Lulu for 99 years.
