Call for Asean to maintain core principles in regional strategy
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean member states must adhere to the principles of centrality, neutrality and non-alignment as the region navigates forward, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (pic).
The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said Asean must try its best to align common interests and respond in a more coordinated manner to navigate the current complexities of global trade.
'Towards that end, Malaysia takes its role as the Chair of Asean seriously,' said Tengku Zafrul in his speech during the pre-media briefing on the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026-2030 yesterday.
Collectively, he said Asean and dialogue partners have also reaffirmed support for a rules-based multilateral trading system.
'As Asean Chair, Malaysia will continue to prioritise constructive engagements, premised on trade diplomacy.
'Up till recently, we are reasonably sure that Asean has and will continue being a region where investments and trade thrive. We are reasonably sure that Asean is well on its way to becoming the world's fourth largest economic bloc by 2030.
'Today, to ensure those projections remain true in the years to come, we need to organise and coordinate ourselves better,' he said.
Asked about how Asean would navigate on the fears of certain products flooding the market amid the global trade war, Tengku Zafrul said the Asean economic ministers have decided that the bloc needed to form a GeoEconomic Task Force at the Asean level to address the issue.
'The decision was for Malaysia and Indonesia to co-lead this,' he said.
Malaysia will host the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits on Monday and Tuesday.
Wisma Putra is taking the lead in organising these summits under Malaysia's Asean chairmanship this year with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.
Two other high-level meetings – the 2nd Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the Asean-GCC-China Economic Summit – will also be held.

100 Sacrificial Cows Sold At Affordable Price In Permatang Pauh
BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 5 (Bernama) -- The National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) has distributed 100 cows at half of the market price to ease the financial burden of Permatang Pauh constituents performing the sacrificial ritual in conjunction with Aidiladha this Saturday. Senior political secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, said NACCOL has taken the initiative to provide each cow weighing 220 kg or more. 'Through this special programme, each cow is sold at RM2,800, with individual portions priced at RM399. For a start, it is being offered exclusively to the Permatang Pauh constituents, in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's intention to ensure that the underprivileged can perform the sacrificial rite. 'Although Permatang Pauh is not the Prime Minister's parliamentary constituency, he feels a strong connection to this area. That is why he wants to help ease the burden of the people here and allow them to carry out the ritual at an affordable price,' he told reporters after the ceremony to distribute the sacrificial cows at the Taman Arowana night market site today. Under the programme, 40 areas, including mosques and surau, as well as members of non-governmental organisations and staff of government agencies in the constituency, received the cows that they had purchased. Shamsul Iskandar noted that the initiative did not involve any government subsidies, as NACCOL purchased the cattle directly from farms in large quantities. He said the sacrificial cows were obtained through collaboration with the Johor State Farmers' Organisation and Johor Plantations Group, adding that the initiative will be expanded to other parliamentary constituencies next year. 'For example, the congregation of Masjid Kubang Ulu in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency purchased 17 cows. The total would have reached RM95,000, but through this initiative, they only paid RM47,000, savings of nearly 50 per cent,' he added. -- BERNAMA

Malaysia brings ASEAN voice to OECD meeting in Paris
KUALA LUMPUR: ASEAN, which is chaired by Malaysia this year, has expressed full support for all efforts to strengthen open markets and uphold a rules-based multilateral trading system as the foundation for sustainable and inclusive global growth. The Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ambassador Syahril Syazli Ghazali said the ASEAN chairmanship's theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' reflects Malaysia's priority in promoting a fair, sustainable and inclusive trade. 'In addressing the emerging global headwinds and uncertainties, ASEAN Geoeconomics Task Force (AGTF) was established to monitor, assess and recommend policy responses to strengthen ASEAN – as a single market,' he said in a statement to Bernama today. Syahril Syazli represented Malaysia at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM) held from June 3 to 4 in Paris. Malaysia is also spearheading various initiatives to build a digitally resilient ASEAN, in particular, driving the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) negotiations, towards substantial conclusion by the end of this year. 'DEFA is a cornerstone in facilitating and promoting the 'inclusivity' of ASEAN, and ensuring the region will continue to enjoy digital trade benefits,' he said.
