Original-Owner 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo Is Our Bring a Trailer Pick
This 944 is from the first year for the Turbo and has some tasteful options.
It also has exceptionally low mileage.
For decades, the Porsche 944 suffered simply from not being a 911. Why would you get Stuttgart's front-engine, four-cylinder sports car if you could afford the rear-engine, flat-six icon? Well, with air-cooled 911 values now shot to the moon, many Porsche fans have taken another look at the 944.
This 1986 944 Turbo up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos) is a prime example of Porsche's transaxle era. It has just 35K miles on the odometer and boasts the desirable 16-inch Fuchs wheels, sport seats, not to mention eighties-tastic features like pop-up headlights and a boost gauge.
And despite its little-brother status, a naturally-aspirated 944 was crowned champion in a 1984 Car and Driver shootout to find the best handling imported car, beating a 911 and a Porsche 928, as well as a Ferrari, a Lotus, and several others. Testers had few complaints, other than Don Sherman pointing out that the tested 944 could do with the added support of the sport seats. Well, this one has them.
It also comes with forced induction grunt for its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, good for 217 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. That power gets to the ground through a five-speed manual, the gearbox mounted in the rear—again, this is a transaxle machine—for better weight balance.
With a curb weight of around 2800 pounds, this 944 has roughly the same power-to-weight ratio as a modern Toyota GR86, more than enough to carve up a back road. However, with a bit of turbo lag to manage, and more torque on tap, the Porsche has a bit more character. It's an accessible performance classic, and great fun to drive.
Change out the tires (with a date code of 2010, it's probably time for something fresh and sticky), and change the timing belt (again, based on age), and this 944 Turbo is ready to go. Overlooked for decades, these cars have aged like a fine Württemberg riesling.
The 944 should always have received the respect it does today. This example has just enough wear on it that you won't feel bad about driving it, and the silver-over-black combination is perfect for shrugging off the miles. Spool up that turbo and hit your favorite piece of wriggling tarmac. A 944 might not drive like a 911. It might actually be better.
The auction ends on August 7.

Factbox-US startup seeks to recharge Europe's fallen battery icon Northvolt
By Marie Mannes and Alessandro Parodi STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Silicon Valley startup Lyten said on Thursday it had agreed to buy bankrupt Northvolt's remaining assets in Sweden and Germany, potentially reviving Europe's hopes of building a domestic electric vehicle battery industry to reduce reliance on China. Here are some details about Lyten, Northvolt's collapse and lithium-sulphur batteries. WHO IS LYTEN? Founded in 2015, Lyten started out in a shipping container in California, but has gained backing from Chrysler-parent Stellantis and U.S. delivery giant FedEx. It now develops lithium-sulphur battery cells, which it hopes will compete with conventional lithium-ion technology. It announced plans in 2024 to build the world's first gigafactory for lithium-sulphur batteries in Reno, Nevada, with an investment of over $1 billion. Over the past year, Lyten has acquired two of Northvolt's former businesses: a U.S. R&D hub and Northvolt's energy storage systems factory, Europe's largest. WHAT HAPPENED TO NORTHVOLT? Sweden's Northvolt collapsed in March after being in a U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy process since 2024. The company struggled to scale output at its flagship plant in northern Sweden, despite support from a major customer, truckmaker Scania. Once considered a pioneer in European battery cell production, Northvolt had a $50-billion order book with automakers including BMW, Volkswagen, Volvo Cars and Audi. That was wiped out following the bankruptcy. It raised more than $10 billion in equity, debt and public funding since its 2016 launch, and had over 6,000 workers at one point before most were let go. Its largest shareholders included Volkswagen with a 21% stake, and Goldman Sachs, with 19%. WHY IS LITHIUM-SULPHUR SIGNIFICANT? Many in the EV industry hope that electric autos in the future can run on lithium-sulphur, which can be up to two-thirds cheaper than today's lithium-ion battery cells. Lithium-sulphur batteries do not contain nickel, cobalt, or manganese - materials whose supply is dominated by China - making them cheaper and potentially more sustainable. WHO IS BACKING LYTEN? Lyten has raised over $625 million from investors including Stellantis, FedEx, and the U.S. government. Other investors and partners include Honeywell, a supplier to planemaker Boeing and Airbus, venture capital firm Prime Movers Lab, and Canadian miner Wallbridge, according to Lyten's website. The Porsche Taycan Is One of the Best Performance EVs I've Driven, but Not for the Reason You Think
Table of Contents The Porsche Taycan Is One of the Best Performance EVs I've Driven, but Not for the Reason You Think I've driven plenty of electric cars from the biggest brands -- everything from sleek sedans to bulky SUVs -- and while many of them impress on paper, very few manage to like up to that in real life. Range is never quite as good. Charging isn't quite as fast as expected. That's what made the 2025 Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo such a standout. I was expecting speed, grip, and all the other Porsche party tricks. What I didn't expect was to be raving about range and charging times more than 0 to 60s and lateral Gs. Porsche handed me the keys to the freshly updated 2025 Taycan -- the one with tweaked battery chemistry and improved efficiency. Porsche doesn't scream about it in bold letters, but those upgrades give you an extra 40 to 50 miles of range depending on spec and driving style. That might not sound revolutionary, but when you're actually driving the performance EV, you quickly realize that all your range anxiety has been left behind. The Porsche Taycan is a performance king, but its range is what sold me Let's get this out of the way: the Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo is fast. It'll still slam you into the seat with all 598 horsepower available in launch control mode, and the 3.6-second 0 to 60mph time is wildly impressive for something that has more than enough space in the back for everyday use. The ride is tight, steering is sharp, and despite it being the estate version of the Taycan, it feels every bit a Porsche through the corners. But that's not what impressed me most about this performance EV. Rather, I was blown away by the electric experience. The range, charging speeds -- you know, all the boring bits. Connor Jewiss/CNET I first picked the car up from Porsche HQ with around 86% charge remaining, reading 272 miles of range in Sport Plus mode. I quickly learned that this wasn't an optimistic estimate like most other EVs. After around five hours of mixed driving -- some sporty backroad shenanigans, some motorway cruising, a little crawling through town -- I looked down and the car was actually going to make it the whole trip. And it did. Having switched into the Range driving mode (which is essentially the most efficient option), I managed to drive 286 miles with around 16% of the charge remaining. That was with a pretty full trunk, the A/C switched on, and zero hypermiling nonsense. Connor Jewiss/CNET The cherry on top? Charging. The 2025 Taycan supports up to 320 kW ultra-fast charging, and I got to test that with a 250 kW+ station. It went from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes. That's not a manufacturer estimate, it's what I saw. Almost an entire charge in the time it took me to get some breakfast in Starbucks and visit the bathroom. Even at lower-powered stations, it never felt sluggish. Now, there is one big range competitor: the Lucid Air. It can go nearly 500 miles on a full charge. It's the champion of EV range, no question. It also supports ultra-fast charging and makes good on that promise. But while the Lucid Air is pegged as a luxury cruiser -- smooth, refined, and wonderfully comfortable -- it doesn't make your heart race. Connor Jewiss/CNET Meanwhile, the Taycan absolutely does. It's a performance EV first and foremost, and one that just happens to also nail range and charging. And that's the difference. Lucid's range might be longer, but the Taycan's range is still exceptional -- and delivered in a package that's genuinely exciting to drive. Inside, the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo is everything you'd expect from Porsche: impeccable build quality, sharp design, and just enough screens to feel futuristic. That said, not everything is perfect. I despise touchscreen climate controls, and Porsche has opted to include these rather than the physical buttons you'll find in other EVs, including the Macan. Dragging a virtual vent around on a screen instead of twisting a knob feels like a usability downgrade, not progress. Connor Jewiss/CNET But I'll forgive that because the rest of the cabin is a stunner. The Provence paint might not have been my go-to color on paper, but in person? It absolutely sings. It's a light, lilac-esque purple that somehow makes the car feel both classy and a little bit cheeky. Pair that with the 21-inch wheels and the Cross Turismo's extra cladding, and you've got one of the best-looking electric vehicles. Practicality is also there in leaps and bounds. Rear passengers get more headroom than in the saloon version, and the back fits 446 liters of cargo -- or more if you fold the seats down. There's even an extra 84 liters under the front hood. And it's not all show; I used that space on my rather long roadtrip. Connor Jewiss/CNET It's also worth noting that all the best features -- the adaptive air suspension, the Sport Chrono package, the panoramic roof, and the Bose surround system -- came fitted to my test car, but they're not standard. The base Taycan starts around $100,000, but the 4S Cross Turismo you see here comes in at roughly $130,000. And once you've ticked a few of those tasty Porsche option boxes? You're easily hovering in the $150K neighborhood. Connor Jewiss/CNET That's steep, sure, but for the right buyer -- someone who wants a proper performance car that happens to be electric -- it might just be worth every penny. And you won't ever have to think twice about whether the car can make it on a longer drive. Editors' note: Travel and charging costs related to this story were covered by the manufacturer, which is common in the auto industry. The judgments and opinions of CNET's staff are our own.

Mercedes-AMG Super SUV Coming For Ferrari, Bentley, And Lamborghini
Mercedes-AMG Super SUV Coming For Ferrari, Bentley, And Lamborghini originally appeared on Autoblog. AMG GT XX Concept Spawning An SUV Next year, the Mercedes EQS SUV will be replaced with something that is styled a little less differently than its gas-powered alternative, the GLS. But for those who want the pinnacle of performance, the AMG division is working on an EV of its own. Well, technically, two, though both are on the same platform. The one pictured here will be a new entrant to the segment of super SUVs, while the sedan we spied last week will be the effective replacement for the $198,950 AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door. But is a high-performance all-electric SUV a good idea? Rivals Are Anticipating Growth In The EV Niche View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Mercedes is lagging far behind BMW in the sales race, and its slow-selling EVs are having incentives thrown at them from every direction, but Mercedes is doubling down and working hard to improve. A few days ago, CEO Ola Källenius said that Mercedes would launch 18 new vehicles by 2027, half of which would be electric, and although he admits that many "top-end [customers] still choose the Swiss watch of cars with a combustion engine," he must also see evidence that demand for EVs will increase by the end of the decade, when Mercedes intends to offer "the choice of an electric powertrain" in all "relevant" Mercedes-Benz models. Bentley is working on a smaller-than-Bentayga electric crossover, and Ferrari has its sights set on an EV by the end of the decade, too, as does Lamborghini. Admittedly, each of these manufacturers has delayed their respective all-electric projects at least once, with Sant'Agata even considering making the Lanzador a hybrid instead, but they would not continue development if they did not see demand spiking soon. Even Porsche, which has already experimented with the Macan, is still pursuing an electric Cayenne. Particularly in Europe, where emissions continue to be strictly monitored, these EVs will eventually be luxury brands' bread and butter. What We Can See From Spy Shots View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Spotted on the Nürburgring, this AMG SUV was reportedly lapping the entire circuit on 285/40ZR22 XL tires on the front wheels and 325/35ZR22 XL rubber on the rear. That means the rear wheels will be over 12 inches wide, and the fronts will be close to 11 inches in width, indicating a lot of power through each axle. With the platform under this behemoth, we expect in the region of a thousand horsepower and fake V8 noises. As for the styling, this prototype closely resembles a lifted variant of the early AMG GT electric sedan development mules we saw last year, which means it'll soon look like the Taycan-rivaling sedan that the AMG GT XX concept foreshadows. A sloping roofline and a Kamm-tail-like rear end give Aston Martin DBX vibes from some angles, but with three-part round lighting units on either side of the tailgate rather than the ever-popular full-width lightbar, AMG's super SUV should have a unique overall aesthetic.
