Swing-off Explained: MLB uses new rule for first time in All-Star Game

Time of Indiaa day ago
Major League Baseball
(MLB) added a new twist in the 2025 All-Star Game by using a 'swing-off' to decide the winner instead of extra innings at Atlanta's
Truist Park
on Tuesday night. Tied 6-6 after nine innings, the NL-AL game moved into a Home Run Derby-style showdown.
Each team picked three hitters, who get three swings each to hit as many home runs as possible. Teams with the most HR wins the game. The National League (NL), powered by
Kyle Schwarber
's perfect 3-for-3 round, edged out the American League (AL) 4-3.

Earlier in the night, MLB also paid a touching tribute to Hall of Famer Hank Aaron by recreating his iconic 715th home run with projection mapping and pyrotechnics. Following the sixth inning, lights dimmed and fans lit up the stadium with their phones as the legendary scene from April 8, 1974, was projected on the infield and video board.

Aaron's widow, Billye, stood and waved to a roaring crowd of 41,702, as fans celebrated the enduring legacy of one of baseball's greatest icons.

WNBA rejection won't deter Patrick Mahomes' $275M Kansas City mission

Patrick Mahomes (via Getty Images) Patrick Mahomes has already delivered championships, investment, and generational excitement to Kansas City—and he's not finished. When the WNBA rejected his offer to bring a team to the city, the Chiefs' all-world quarterback made one thing clear: Kansas City is his home, and he's not going anywhere in terms of constructing its sports empire. Patrick Mahomes' WNBA bid comes up short despite star power and established investment track record At age 24, Patrick Mahomes became the youngest owner in the history of MLB when he acquired the Kansas City Royals. Since then, he has diversified his portfolio to comprise Sporting KC (MLS) and Kansas City Current (NWSL) ownership. It was only a matter of time before he directed his attention to women's basketball. But in an unexpected turn, the WNBA is said to have turned down Patrick Mahomes' overture to bring an expansion team to Kansas City. Even with his clout, extensive roots in the city, and expanding interest in female sports, the league opted to give expansion rights elsewhere—in more amiable arena situations or demographics-based markets. Patrick Mahomes speaks on potentially owning a WNBA team 'It's been really cool to see the WNBA and how it's really grown over these last few years especially,' he said. 'There's been a lot of great players for a long time …obviously Caitlin Clark , A'Ja Wilson. It's great to see these players receive the publicity they've deserved. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Are Watching Tariffs - Few Are Watching What Nvidia Just Launched Seeking Alpha Read More Undo Although Kansas City lost out, he has no intention of giving up. We didn't luck out enough to get the team…but it won't stop our push to try to get a team to Kansas City. " Patrick Mahomes' $275M commitment is bigger than football In 2020, Patrick Mahomes agreed to a historic 10-year, $450 million contract with the Chiefs—$275 million of which is guaranteed. That was not merely a contract to remain in red and gold. It was a declaration of loyalty to Kansas City. Ever since, Mahomes has transcended being a quarterback. Through his 15 and the Mahomies Foundation, he's donated millions to youth and underprivileged communities. Kansas City lost a WNBA team, but it still keeps Patrick Mahomes Mahomes' WNBA bid may have been rejected—temporarily. But if there's one thing his career has taught us, it's that people rarely win when they bet against him. Bryan Braman net worth, family, NFL career: Former Eagles linebacker passes away at 38 after rare cancer battle

Bryan Braman , former linebacker for the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles, has died at the age of 38. His agent, Sean Stellato, confirmed that Braman passed away on Thursday, 17 July, after months of treatment for a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Braman had been undergoing care in Seattle, where he had multiple surgeries and received CAR-T cell therapy. His diagnosis was first shared publicly in February through a GoFundMe campaign created to support his medical costs. 'Gone far too soon' The fundraiser, which raised more than $88,000, drew wide support from teammates and fans alike. Former Texans teammate JJ Watt contributed $10,000 and shared a tribute on X, writing, 'Rest in Peace brother. Gone far too soon.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like My 4-year-old kidneys are failing, only you can help Donate For Health Donate Now Undo — JJWatt (@JJWatt) Tributes continued pouring in across social media. Fans, former coaches and players remembered Braman not only for his wild energy on the field, but for his loyalty in the locker room and his commitment to the sport. Live Events Braman's agent described him as a proud father. He is survived by his daughters, Blakely and Marlowe, aged 11 and 8. From undrafted to unforgettable Braman's journey to the NFL was not conventional. He went undrafted in 2011 after college stints at Long Beach City College, Idaho and West Texas A&M. Still, he earned his way onto the Houston Texans' roster as a free agent. What followed was a seven-season NFL career defined by grit and fearlessness. He made 97 appearances across both teams, recording 56 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one fumble recovery. In 2014, Braman signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles worth $3.15 million. He became known for his aggressive special teams play, once making a tackle after losing his helmet mid-play. But his defining moment came during the 2017 season. Super Bowl LII: A final bow Braman rejoined the Eagles just before their playoff run and made an immediate impact. In a tense 15–10 win against the Atlanta Falcons, he blocked a crucial punt that shifted the game's momentum. He played his final professional match in Super Bowl LII, where the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41–33. Braman recorded a tackle in the game that gave Philadelphia its first NFL championship since 1960. Reflecting on his life and career, Braman once said, 'The three greatest accomplishments in my life [are] my seven NFL seasons, the Super Bowl win and my daughters,' as reported by The Guardian. A quiet battle, A loud legacy Despite his public image as a relentless and loud presence on the field, Braman chose to keep his illness largely private. Updates came only through the GoFundMe page, where in June it was revealed that the cancer had spread rapidly around vital organs. Many close to him have noted the shock of his passing, as few outside his inner circle knew how serious his condition had become. His former teammate and friend JJ Watt said it best. 'Gone far too soon.' What set Braman apart wasn't just how he played, but how he carried himself. He was the kind of player every team needs. Not a star by name, but someone who took hits, blocked punts and never looked for the spotlight. NFL fans remember him as a fierce special teams player, but teammates knew him as the glue in every locker room he entered. Even in an era where the NFL often celebrates high-profile stars, Braman carved out a place through hustle, heart and sheer determination. His story remains a reminder that greatness often comes from those who never ask for it.

Empty promises for real gold: Olympic medallist Arshad Nadeem reveals truth behind Pakistan's fake promises after his win

Pakistan's Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem has raised concerns over unfulfilled government promises, including the allotment of land plots, following his historic win at the Paris Olympics . Nadeem clinched gold with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 metres, finishing ahead of India's Neeraj Chopra , who took silver at the Stade de France. "Out of all the prize announcements made for me, all the plot announcements were fake, which I did not receive. Apart from that, I have received all the cash prizes that were announced," Geo TV quoted him as saying. Nadeem's achievement marked Pakistan's first gold medal in track and field , leading to numerous rewards from government authorities, provincial bodies, and private organisations. Despite these challenges, Nadeem remains committed to his preparation for the upcoming World Championships in September. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? When he took up javelin, Nadeem reportedly did not have much money. According to his father, Muhammad Ashraf, people pooled money so that he can train. Live Events 'People have no idea how Arshad got to this place today. How his fellow villagers and relatives used to donate money so that he could travel to other cities for his training and events in his early days,' his father Muhammad Ashraf revealed. The 27-year-old Nadeem, the son of a retired construction worker and the third of eight siblings, was initially drawn to cricket like many Pakistanis. With no dedicated track and field facilities in Pakistan, athletes often train on cricket fields. In March last year, Nadeem disclosed that he had been using a single, damaged javelin for the past seven years.
