Stocks to watch on May 27: CLSA, HSBC, Jefferies issue fresh views on Glenmark, Fusion, Nazara, AB Fashion, IT sector

Business Upturn27-05-2025
A series of post-earnings commentary from top brokerages have spotlighted key stocks including Glenmark Pharma, Fusion Microfinance, Nazara Technologies, Brainbees (FirstCry), and Aditya Birla Fashion, among others. CLSA on Fusion Microfinance: Underperform, TP ₹155
CLSA maintained an underperform rating on Fusion Fin, citing limited forward guidance from the management, which includes a newly appointed CEO. The brokerage noted that disbursement trends for Q1FY26 are expected to remain similar to Q4 levels.
While the company has maintained a high provision coverage ratio (PCR) of 96.5% on its Stage 3 pool (7.9% of AUM), net slippages in the past two quarters were higher at 13–14% annualised, compared to CA Grameen's 11%. Write-offs were nearly three times those of CA Grameen. CLSA is currently building in 7% AUM growth and a 6% credit cost for FY26, but sees comfort in the company's successful rights issue. Morgan Stanley on Brainbees (FirstCry): Overweight, TP ₹574
Morgan Stanley retained its overweight stance on Brainbees following a solid Q4 showing. GMV rose 14% YoY, while revenue and adjusted EBITDA (excluding share-based expenses) grew by 16% and 20% YoY, respectively.
For the first time, the company disclosed that apparel and footwear accounted for 52% of India multichannel GMV in FY25. Meanwhile, the share of homegrown brands rose to 55%, compared to 37% in FY20. Despite a revenue miss across segments, the core Brainbees business stood out. HSBC on Glenmark Pharma: Buy, TP ₹1,720
HSBC maintained a buy rating on Glenmark Pharma despite a weak Q4, which included operational misses and one-offs that dragged reported profit. However, the brokerage believes that the India and US businesses — which contribute a combined 56% of FY25 revenue — have likely bottomed out.
HSBC highlighted that a potential outlicensing deal for the investigational drug ISB 2001 remains a key catalyst for a valuation re-rating. HSBC on IT sector: Mixed outlook
HSBC noted that Indian IT firms have seen a drop in cash conversion metrics during FY25, with mid-tier companies underperforming their larger counterparts. While market valuations still favour topline growth, HSBC pointed to rising investor focus on earnings quality. TCS saw a gradual decline in conversion, while Coforge and Persistent Systems remained the weakest. Jefferies on AB Fashion: Buy, TP ₹100
Jefferies reiterated a buy call on Aditya Birla Fashion, noting a well-rounded Q4 performance. The brokerage cited strong margin expansion in Pantaloons, a significant reduction in losses from TMRW, over 40% growth in the ethnic wear segment (excluding TCNS), and healthy same-store sales across lifestyle brands. However, the net cash position came in below estimates. CLSA on Nazara Technologies: Underperform, TP ₹705
CLSA remained cautious on Nazara after the gaming and e-sports company missed Q4 estimates. Revenue and EBITDA fell 3% sequentially. While FY25 revenue surged 43% YoY to ₹16.2 billion, margins declined by 179 basis points to 9.4%.
The brokerage cut FY26–27 revenue and profit estimates by 2–9%, factoring in continued pressure and excluding the pending Curves Games acquisition. Nazara's e-sports revenue rose 21% YoY, while its real-money gaming associate PokerBaazi posted a 39% YoY rise in revenue, but remained loss-making.

India proposes slashing taxes on small cars under Modi reforms, sending shares higher

By Nikunj Ohri, Aftab Ahmed and Aditi Shah NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India aims to slash taxes on small cars and insurance premiums as part of a sweeping reform of its goods and services tax (GST), a government source said on Monday, sparking a rally in Indian stock markets. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration revealed plans over the weekend for the largest tax overhaul since 2017, with consumer, auto and insurance companies likely to emerge as the biggest winners when product prices drop from October, once the reform is approved. The federal government has suggested lowering GST on small petrol and diesel cars to 18% from the current 28%, said the source who is directly involved in the matter. The consumption tax on health and life insurance premiums may also be lowered to 5% or even zero from 18% currently, the same source said. Shares of Maruti Suzuki, the biggest seller of small petrol cars in India, surged nearly 9% on Monday, leading a rally in auto shares that helped push India's benchmark Nifty index 1.3% higher, on course for its best day in three months. Shares of other carmakers such as Mahindra & Mahindra, as well as motorbike manufacturers like Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto, which will also benefit from tax cuts, jumped 2%-4% on Monday. Stocks of insurance companies such as ICICI Prudential, SBI Life, and LIC rose as much as 2%-5% before pairing some gains. Modi's deep tax cuts will strain government revenues but have drawn praise from businesses and political pundits who say they will bolster his image in an ongoing trade fight with Washington. Maruti Chairman R.C. Bhargava said the tax rationalisation is a "huge reform". "With more affordability, more people will come into the purchasing system," said Bhargava, who declined to comment on proposed tax cuts on small cars until the fine print is out. "This restructuring of the GST will increase competitiveness of Indian products and the opening of trade borders will bring in the necessary competition. Competition, combined with your ability to produce and sell at lower prices, makes for the best efficiency," he added. Federal government officials over the weekend said New Delhi has proposed only two rates of taxation -- 5% and 18% -- under the revamped structure. The highest 28% rate will be abolished. The new proposal, however, will impose a 40% tax on 5-7 "sin-goods" like tobacco products and luxury items. The announcement will not be effective until the GST Council, which is chaired by the federal finance minister and has representatives from all states, gives a nod. A meeting is expected by October. India's finance ministry did not reply to an email seeking comment. PUSH FOR SMALL CARS Sales of small cars, defined as those having engine capacity below 1200cc for petrol vehicles and 1500cc for diesel and not exceeding 4 metres in length, have slowed over the last few years as buyers switched to bigger, feature-rich SUVs. Small cars made up a third of the 4.3 million passenger vehicles sold in the world's third-largest automobile market last fiscal year, down from nearly 50% pre-COVID, industry data showed. The segment makes up half of all cars sold by Maruti, majority-owned by Japan's Suzuki Motor, which saw its market share plunge to about 40% from over 50% in the last five years as sales of its Alto, Dzire and Wagon-R models dropped. Carmakers Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors also stand to gain. Cars with higher engine capacity that currently attract 28% GST and an additional levy of up to 22% - resulting in total taxes of about 50% - may come under a new special rate of 40%, the source said. The government source added that details are being firmed up to consider if any extra levies should be imposed over the 40% to keep the overall tax incidence for big cars the same at 43%-50%. On the other hand insurance penetration in India continues to remain low, at 3.8% of GDP, in 2024, according to research firm Swiss Re Institute. The companies believe lowering of GST will help boost sales of insurance products.

Gupta lawyers fail to appear for Trafigura fraud case hearing

By Eric Onstad LONDON (Reuters) -Lawyers representing Indian businessman Prateek Gupta said they failed to appear for a hearing on Monday because of funding difficulties in a long-running fraud case brought by commodity trader Trafigura about nickel cargoes, a London court heard. Geneva-based Trafigura, a major industrial metals and oil trader, filed a lawsuit against Gupta in February 2023, alleging it had been the victim of a $600-million fraud involving nickel cargoes masterminded by Gupta and in which he and his companies participated. Gupta has said in his defence that Trafigura staff devised the scheme at the centre of the case to substitute low-value materials such as scrap for high-grade nickel. Trafigura and its employees have denied any knowledge of fraud. Gupta's lawyers Preston Turnbull informed Trafigura and the court on Friday that due to a lack of funding they would not be attending Monday's hearing regarding the use of documents in a separate arbitration case. "That is an excuse which has been routinely trotted out by the Gupta defendants throughout these proceedings when it had suited them to do so, and it is without any merit," Trafigura lawyer Edward Ho told Monday's hearing. Preston Turnbull did not respond to a request for comment. In March 2024, lawyers for Gupta told a court he had run out of funds to pay legal fees, and in June last year Gupta changed lawyers to Preston Turnbull from Mishcon De Reya. "The court has previously found, and I agree, that there are sources of funding available to the Gupta defendants," Ho added. "Alleged funding issues have been a recurring theme... to justify their failure to meet court deadlines and to comply with court orders." Judges have granted a succession of delays over many months to Gupta to meet deadlines for disclosure of documents relevant to the case, which is due to go to trial in November. Judge Robin Knowles on Monday granted Trafigura's request to use nine documents disclosed by Gupta in the current fraud case in a separate arbitration case due to be heard next month. The arbitration case involves Trafigura and Hong-Kong based Axiom Ltd because Trafigura sold one of the cargoes provided by Gupta to Axiom, which was found not to contain nickel, the court heard. Linktree goes dark in India — and the company isn't sure why

Linktree, the popular link-in-bio service used by millions of creators and businesses, has been inaccessible in India for several days — and its sudden disappearance from the Indian web remains a mystery, even to the Australian startup itself. Over the past week, Linktree has been inaccessible in India, with a few users raising the issue on X. Initially, TechCrunch noticed that the site briefly displayed a message suggesting it had been blocked by the Indian government. Later, this was replaced by a generic SSL protocol error. The Linktree app has also been inaccessible in the country. Founded in 2016, Linktree became a unicorn in 2022 and surpassed 50 million users in 2024. India has been the platform's fifth-largest market by traffic, accounting for 3.5% of its global visits — or about 7.3 million in July, per Similarweb data shared with TechCrunch. Linktree co-founder and CEO Alex Zaccaria told TechCrunch that the startup was looking into the situation. However, the executive did not confirm whether the startup received a communication from Indian authorities on its blockage. The startup later posted on X that it was aware of the service outage in India and was 'investigating' the issue. As reported by the Indian daily The Hindu, the outage is not limited to a specific internet service provider and appears to affect all major networks. The U.S. remains Linktree's top market, with 48.5 million visits, followed by Indonesia (32.3 million), Brazil (30.8 million), and the U.K. (9.4 million), Similarweb data shows. India's IT and telecom ministries did not respond to emails sent over the weekend.
