Coca-Cola Philippines Expands PET Bottle Collection Program to Help Strengthen Recycling Efforts

GMA Network4 days ago

3 June 2025, MANILA, Philippines — Coca-Cola Philippines builds on its ongoing sustainability efforts with the expanded rollout of its 'Tapon to Ipon' PET bottle collection program, marking an important step towards supporting local bottle collection infrastructure and helping accelerate PET bottle recovery efforts across communities.
The expanded Tapon to Ipon program consolidates Coca-Cola Philippines' various bottle collection programs including the Tindahan Extra Mile (TEM) initiative into one program. With over 6,000 collection hubs now in operation nationwide, the initiative aims to make recycling drop off points more accessible to communities across the Philippines.
The initiative was officially relaunched with a community activation event on April 29, 2025, at Terra 28th in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), highlighting the importance of strong local engagement.
'Coca-Cola Philippines continues to innovate and improve our recycling systems to help address plastic waste,' said Tony del Rosario, President of Coca-Cola Philippines. 'By expanding Tapon to Ipon, we are increasing collection and recycling access and reinforcing our commitment to partnerships that help deliver positive impact in local communities.'
Originally launched in 2021 by Coca-Cola Europacific Aboitiz Philippines (CCEAP), formerly Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI), Tapon to Ipon has engaged sari-sari store owners, customers, government agencies, and local governments to recover post-consumer clear PET bottles.
'We are grateful to all our partners who continue to support collective environmental action,' said Gareth McGeown, CEO and President of CCEAP. 'Strengthening collection and recycling infrastructure has always been a key goal of Tapon to Ipon, and its expansion underscores our shared mission to empower communities and create a more sustainable future for Filipinos.'
Coca-Cola's expanded initiative officially kicked off with a Tapon to Ipon booth activation on April 29, 2025, at Terra 28th in BGC, showcasing the importance of strong community engagement.
At the Tapon to Ipon activation in BGC, attendees dropped off their empty PET bottles and joined the 'Dunk, Not Junk' shooting hoops game for a chance to win Coca-Cola merchandise, refreshing products, and other exciting prizes.
The aim is to bring the collected bottles to PETValue Philippines, the country's first food-grade bottle-to-bottle recycling facility located in General Trias, Cavite. PETValue Philippines, a joint venture between CCEAP and Indorama Ventures, plays a critical role in turning post-consumer PET bottles into new food-grade recycled PET (rPET) packaging.
To date, CCEAP has reached over 170 cities and municipalities nationwide. The program has also been recognized at the FMCG Asia Awards, Quill Awards, and Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards, underscoring its significant contribution to promoting more sustainable practices and responsible waste management.
Incentivizing community recycling systems
As an expanded part of the program, which now incorporates the Tindahan Extra Mile program, sari-sari store and carinderia owners will also become empowered to be rewarded for their recycling efforts.
Implemented in partnership with Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. (BEST) and the Philippine Association of Stores and Carinderia Owners (PASCO), participating micro-retailers collect PET plastic bottles and other recyclables from their communities and can earn points based on the volume of materials they gather. They can use these points to redeem cash or products through the bXTRA app.
Tapon to Ipon underscores the company's ongoing commitment to sustainability. By partnering with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), retailers, private organizations, and local government units, the company continues to build a strong network of collection hubs that make recycling more accessible and engaging for communities across the country.
Hundreds of collection points have been established across the Philippines to make recycling more accessible to communities. To find the nearest collection point, visit the interactive map at: https://www.coca-cola.com/ph/en/brands/coca-cola/sustainability

Go calls for increased surveillance amid threat of HIV, monkeypox, COVID-19

Senator Christopher 'Bong' Go, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, said there is an urgent need to intensify disease surveillance and prevention capabilities through legislative efforts, amid the threat of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), monkeypox and COVID-19 in the Philippines and other countries. In a public hearing committee conducted earlier in the week, Go highlighted the need for proactive measures following the increase of COVID-19 and monkeypox (mpox) cases across the region, adding that greater public awareness and early interventions are crucial. 'Napakaimportante rin po nitong Virology Institute and the Center for Disease Control (The Virology Institute and the Center for Disease Control is very important) that would strengthen research and development on potential disease-causing agents and medical surveillance,' Go said, emphasizing the necessity of institutionalized infrastructure to fight against emerging health threats. Go said the Virology Institute has been identified as one of the administration's current priorities. ''Yun po ang pinag-uusapan din po na naging prayoridad din po ng administration ngayon, ito pong pagpasa ng panukalang magtatayo ng Virology Institute,' he said. (The passage of the bill on the proposed Virology Institute was discussed and made a priority by the administration now.) Go is the principal author and co-sponsor of the Senate Bill No. 2893, or the Virology Institute of the Philippines Act, which was approved on its third and final reading by the Senate last February 3. Once enacted, the Virology Institute of the Philippines (VIP) will intensify the country's virology research capabilities, advance vaccine self-reliance, and certify a more proactive approach in fighting emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Go also called for vigilance in light of mpox infections detected in several areas in the country, warned against complacency and urged Filipinos to act before a potential outbreak escalates. 'Alam naman natin minsan na nagiging kumpyansa tayo. Pero kung mapipigilan natin sa lalong madaling panahon ay 'wag po itong kumalat, at 'wag na po umabot sana sa isang pandemya muli. Lessons learned po tayo. Dapat po'y unahin natin parati ang prevention.' (We know that sometimes we become complacent. But if we can stop it as soon as possible, it will no longer spread and not reach another pandemic. We have our lessons learned. We must always prioritize prevention.) More cases of mpox were detected in April 2025 as compared to May, and the total cases have so far reached 911 since 2024, the Department of Health (DOH) previously said. The City of Iloilo logged three additional confirmed cases of mpox, according to a report released by the Iloilo City Health Office (CHO) last Monday. The three additional cases are from the list of four suspected cases previously reported, according to GMA Regional TV. The three new confirmed cases have no close contact with the first confirmed case. Meanwhile, Go cited that as of June 5, Asia is experiencing a renewed rise in COVID-19 cases through the highly transmissible Omicron subvariant NB.1.8.1, which currently spreads across countries including India, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and others. Countries reported sharp increases despite severity remaining generally low and hospital systems are not overwhelmed. Symptoms associated with NB.1.8.1 include fatigue, sore throat, congestion, and fever. However, there's no indication yet that the variant leads to more severe illness. The number of young Filipinos infected with HIV has increased by 500%, prompting the DOH to request for the declaration of a national public health emergency for HIV. Go has also filed Senate Bill No. 195, proposing the creation of a Center for Disease Control modeled after the disease control institutions of other countries, and will serve as the central authority on public health surveillance and disease prevention. 'These institutions are vital to protecting our people and preparing our health system for the challenges ahead,' Go said. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Jobless Filipinos rose to 2.06M in April 2025, says PSA

The number of Filipinos without jobs or livelihoods rose to over two million in April 2025 as more people entered the labor force, seeking jobs, during the period but only few were absorbed by the market, according to the results of the Philippine Statistics Authority's latest Labor Force Survey. At a press briefing on Friday, National Statistician Claire Dennis Mapa reported that unemployed persons, ages 15 and above, increased slightly to 2.06 million in the fourth month of the year from 1.93 million in March 2025. Year-on-year, jobless individuals climbed by 23,000 from 2.04 million in April 2024, according to the PSA chief. As a percentage of 50.74 million participants in the labor force —who are actively looking for labor opportunities during the period — the number of unemployed persons translated to an unemployment rate of 4.1%, up from 3.9% in March and 4% in April last year. 'Dumami kasi ang mga kasama sa labor force, labor force participation, so siya 'yung factor… 'pag tumataas ang labor force participation, hindi naman lahat na-absorb lahat para maging employed persons,' Mapa said. (The increase in the number of those joining the labor force was the factor… when labor force participation rises, not everyone is absorbed to become employed persons.) Labor force participants grew by 340,000 from April 2024 and by about 780,000 from March 2025's 49.96 million. Of the 340,000 year-on-year growth in labor force participation, the PSA chief said about 317,000 became employed while 23,000 were not absorbed. 'Despite the slight uptick in unemployment, the Philippine labor market continues to demonstrate resilience amid global headwinds. We remain on track to meet our target unemployment range of 4.4% to 4.7% set under the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028,' said Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) officer-in-charge and Undersecretary for Policy and Planning Rosemarie Edillon. —AOL, GMA Integrated News

UN urges stronger HIV response as cases among Filipino youth surge by 500%

Amid a staggering 500% increase in HIV cases among young Filipinos, the United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Philippine government in addressing what is now being considered a national public health emergency. Arnaud Peral, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Philippines, expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in HIV infections, particularly among individuals aged 15 to 25. 'We have been expressing concern for quite some time about the increasing numbers,' Peral said, noting that the UN, through its joint program UNAIDS and agencies like UNFPA and UNICEF, has been working closely with the Philippines' health department. According to the DOH, over 6,700 new HIV cases were recorded from January to April 2025, averaging 56 new cases daily. This marks a 44% increase from the same period last year, with youth accounting for the bulk of new infections Peral acknowledged the limitations in international funding but emphasized that the Philippines has been receiving support through mechanisms like the Global Fund. 'The resources from the international community are limited, but we have been accessing the Global Fund for the Philippines for a few years,' he said. As the country approaches the mid-term review of its national development plans, Peral stressed the importance of reassessing current strategies. 'The scale of the challenge is also challenging us—to unpack what it means and establish a proper strategy to address it,' he explained. He confirmed that HIV will be a key priority moving forward, with updated data and strategies to be reflected in the upcoming Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 'We will be looking at the latest numbers. That will be published pretty soon in the VNR,' Peral said. 'And definitely on HIV, it's going to be a priority.' The Department of Health has already called on President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to declare a national public health emergency, citing the Philippines as having the highest number of new HIV cases in the Western Pacific region. As the crisis deepens, Peral emphasized the need for a united response: 'We are now reviewing how we can support this strategy and national emergency. The whole of society must come together to address this.' — BM, GMA Integrated News
