Jason Bateman reveals who Matt Damon wanted to play in Arrested Development film
Jason Bateman revealed that Matt Damon was extremely interested in a potential film adaptation of the cult sitcom Arrested Development and even pitched himself for a cameo.
The Emmy-winning actor-director said Damon came up to him at an awards show and put forward his name for the film.
'I remember Matt Damon coming up to me at – I think it was like a Golden Globes or something – and I was so excited to meet him and, and he was a huge fan of Arrested Development,' he said on the Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast. 'And he was saying, 'You know, I really think I could play, because I hear you guys are doing the movie, I think I could…can I play you?''
Mitchell Hurwitz's satirical sitcom, which ran for five seasons from 2003 to 2019, followed the formerly wealthy, now dysfunctional Bluth family who would not change the way they lived despite having fallen on hard times. Bateman played Michael Bluth, a level-headed single father seeking to keep the family together after the arrest of his corrupt father, George Bluth Sr, played by Jeffrey Tambor.
The series also starred Michael Cera as Michael's son George Michael, Jessica Walter as mother Lucille, Will Arnett as older brother George Oscar Bluth II, Alia Shawkat as cousin Mae Fünke, and Portia de Rossi as his sister.
Arrested Development was cancelled by Fox in 2006 after the third season, only to be revived by Netflix in 2013.
When O'Brien asked how Damon would play Bateman's character, the Ozark actor said that Hurwitz 'was thinking the story of the Arrested Development movie would be that in the show, Hollywood wanted to make a movie about [the Bluth family], and we certainly couldn't play ourselves, because we're not actors'.
Bateman said that his Michael Bluth would be 'on set, watching Matt Damon play Michael Bluth, and be so excited'.
While even the potential of a film may be good news to the sitcom's fans, Bateman doesn't believe anyone wants it.
'I don't think anybody gives a s***. I think it's done.'
Bateman received criticism in 2018 for defending Tambor after Walter recalled him verbally harassing her on se t in an interview with the New York Times.
Walter was doing a group interview with Bateman, Tambor, Tony Hale, David Cross, Arnett, and Shawkat when the subject of harassment allegations against Tambor – which saw him – came up.
Instead of reassuring her, Bateman suggested Tambor's behaviour was 'common' in the entertainment industry, deeming it 'a breeding ground for atypical behaviour'.
Bateman's remarks drew a backlash, prompting him to apologise. 'Based on listening to the NYT interview and hearing people's thoughts online, I realise that I was wrong here. I'm horrified that I wasn't more aware of how this incident affected her,' he wrote.
'I'm incredibly embarrassed and deeply sorry to have done that to Jessica. This is a big learning moment for me. I deeply, and sincerely, apologise.'

However when a young woman is murdered, his troubled past comes back to haunt him (Picture: Netflix) Another new entry now, this one from Italy and featuring Teresa Saponangelo and Claudia Gerini - best known for her role in John Wick: Chapter 2. The series centres on a former secret agent - the titular Sara - who is known for her crime-solving skills and ability to lipread. She puts those skills to the test when she returns to spycraft to investigate her son's mysterious death, unravelling a web of secrets about his life (Picture: Netflix) After reigning supreme in the top spot for a fortnight, this dark comedy drama is on its way down but still doing big business with viewers. Sirens focuses on a troubled young woman called Devon, who is struggling to care for her father, who has dementia. We won't spoil it for you but with Georgia's past threatening to catch up with her, Ginny's life just got a lot more complicated. KT Tunstall set to perform at Llangollen Eisteddfod
The BRIT Award-winning singer will perform at the International Eisteddfod on July 10, marking 20 years since her breakthrough debut album, Eye to the Telescope, was released. Ms Tunstall's last visit to the festival was in the 1990s, when she drove down from Edinburgh to help a friend sell candles and incense from a van on the Eisteddfod field. Now, two decades after her rise to fame, she will headline a one-off concert in the Llangollen Pavilion, performing her iconic album live with a full orchestral arrangement. Ms Tunstall said: "He contacted me to explain the idea, and I had to say yes. "I'm so excited. "This will be the only chance people will have to see my music set to an orchestra. "The album, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is very stripped-back music with four to five musicians. "To have an orchestra with me will be mind-blowing." The concert will feature reimagined versions of her hit songs, including Other Side of the World and Suddenly I See, performed with The Absolute Orchestra under the baton of Eisteddfod artistic director Dave Danford. Ms Tunstall said: "It is also out of my comfort zone as I am a bit of a control freak over my music, so I have had to learn to let go of the reins." Reflecting on her previous visit, she recalled: "I have been to the Eisteddfod before. "It was 1996/97 and my friend had a hippie shop in Edinburgh. "I drove down in a van and spent the week at the Eisteddfod selling things like candles and incense. "I loved it." The concert is part of her 2025 tour and will be the only UK date to feature a full orchestral arrangement. Elsewhere in the tour, Ms Tunstall will perform at London's Royal Albert Hall. She said: "I was thinking about getting a few friends round with a six-pack, and instead I will be celebrating with 5,000 people. "I have to pinch myself sometimes when I think it is the 20th anniversary of the album."

Makers of new F1 film say they could not have done it without Lewis Hamilton
Seven-time world champion Hamilton is an executive producer on the Brad Pitt movie, titled 'F1', which is released in the United Kingdom on June 25. Hamilton has been heavily involved in the script – which sees 61-year-old Pitt play the role of veteran driver Sonny Hayes returning to the F1 grid after a long absence – to ensure the film is as authentic as possible. Joseph Kosinski, the man behind Top Gun: Maverick and director of the F1 movie, said at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix: 'Lewis was the first person I reached out to when I had the initial idea for this. 'I sent him an email and just said, 'I want to tell a story in your world. I want to make it as authentic as possible. Will you help me?' And luckily Lewis said 'Yes'. 'He was involved in all the technical details with fascinating advice. In Hungary, for instance, he said, 'If Brad's going to let someone pass during a blue flag and he wants it to be as tight as possible, he's going to only do that at turn six'. And that also was inspired by a conversation with Lewis. So his involvement has been amazing. And we couldn't make the film without him.' Pitt's fictional rookie team-mate Joshua Pearce is played by British actor Damson Idris. Filming has taken place across multiple races over the last two seasons, and F1 chiefs hope the movie will follow the popularity of Netflix's Drive To Survive series in cracking America.
