Plane carrying Liberian president involved in landing scare
MONROVIA — Flights were temporarily disrupted at Liberia main airport on Thursday night after a private jet carrying President Joseph Boakai almost crashed while landing.
Part of the presidential jet's landing gear malfunctioned while approaching the runway, causing a rough landing, airport authorities said.
The incident, which sparked panic at the airport, forced the cancellation of all scheduled flights for the night, local media reported.
President Boakai, who was returning from a trip in Nigeria with his entourage, was safely evacuated unharmed, as authorities announced an investigation.
Photos of the stalled jet at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) circulated on social media, triggering concerns about the president's safety.
Local media, citing airport authorities, said one of the plane's tyres had burst upon landing leaving it stranded on the runway.In a statement, the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) confirmed the "unfortunate near-accident situation" involving the presidential jet.The authority dismissed reports suggesting that the incident was caused by poor runway conditions."The runway infrastructure remains fully compliant with international aviation safety standards," the LAA said.The aircraft has since been removed from the runway and normal operations have resumed at the airport, the authorities said."At this stage, investigation to establish the actual cause of the incident is ongoing, and the airport authority will keep the public informed," the LAA said.The Liberian presidency is yet to comment on the incident but it shared photos of Boakai arriving at the airport, where he briefly spoke to journalists without mentioning the plane scare.He had gone to Nigeria to attend the 50th anniversary of the regional Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas). — BBC

Russia releases Greek-owned oil tanker after brief detention near Estonia
TALLINN — Russia has released a Greek-owned oil tanker which was seized on Sunday in Russian waters after leaving a port in Estonia, the Estonian public broadcaster ERR reported. The Liberian-flagged Green Admire is now sailing in the Baltic Sea and is headed for the Dutch port of Rotterdam, according to ERR and the LSEG ship tracking data service. The tanker was seized by Russian authorities after departing from the Estonian port of Sillamäe and using a designated navigation channel that crosses Russian waters, Estonia's foreign ministry said on Sunday. Estonia's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that Russia's action against the Green Admire was likely a response to the Estonian navy's campaign against Russia's so-called "shadow fleet", in which it is inspecting tankers used to transport millions of barrels of Russian oil through the Baltic Sea. "(The) incident shows that Russia continues to behave unpredictably," Tsahkna said on Sunday, referring to Moscow's detention of the Green Admire. "I have also informed our allies of the event," he said, referring to other NATO members. To prevent similar incidents in the future, Estonia will redirect marine traffic to and from Sillamäe exclusively through Estonian territorial waters, the foreign ministry said. A Russian fighter jet entered NATO airspace last week after Estonia's navy had intercepted a suspected shadow fleet ship in its waters, according to Tsahkna. Russia's shadow fleet is made up of aging tankers bought used, often by non-transparent entities with addresses in non-sanctioning countries such as the United Arab Emirates or the Marshall Islands, and flagged in places like Gabon or the Cook Islands. The European Union has been targeting the ships, which sometimes also carry stolen Ukrainian grain, with sanctions. In February, 70 vessels believed to be part of the shadow fleet were added to more than 50 already listed. EU foreign ministers are expected to slap sanctions on dozens more imminently. — Euronews

King Salman receives message from Liberian President Joseph Boakai
RIYADH: King Salman of Saudi Arabia received a message from Liberian President Joseph Boakai on Wednesday. The spoken communication focused on relations between their countries and ways in which cooperation might be strengthened, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Liberia's foreign minister, Sara Beysolow Nyant, delivered the message for the king to the Saudi deputy foreign minister, Waleed Al-Khuraiji, in Riyadh. During their meeting they discussed regional and international issues of common interest, the SPA added.
