Female relative of Jayden-Lee Meek in court over alleged cover-up after his murder
The 31-year-old will stand trial on charges of crimen injuria, attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice and defeating or obstructing the administration of justice.
With her face hidden by a mask, she appeared to be crying while seated in the dock of the Roodepoort magistrate's court. Some people seated in the public gallery called out, 'how could you?' when she walked into the court.
Meek was last seen on May 13 when the school transport driver dropped him off at the multilevel flat complex where he lived. His badly beaten body was found the next morning on the steps near the door of the family's flat.
The case was remanded to July 18 for a bail application.

On Friday, Gauteng police confirmed that a 31-year-old close family member was arrested in connection with the murder and was due to appear before the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Monday. Last month, IOL reported that residents of Fleurhof marched to the Florida police station in Gauteng, calling for justice after the tragic death of the 11-year-old boy. Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, said the relative was arrested on Friday morning following extensive investigations by Florida detectives with the assistance of the provincial investigative unit and tracking team. Jayden-Lee was reported missing in May 2025 by his mother and was later found unconscious on the staircase of the apartment he was residing at in Fleurhof. He was declared dead at the hospital. 'A case of murder was opened, and police conducted investigations which led to the arrest of the woman. She is expected to appear before Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on (Monday) 14 July 2025 on a charge of murder,' said Nevhuhulwi. According to police, Jayden-Lee was dropped off by his school transport in the afternoon, but he never arrived home. The following day, his lifeless body was discovered undressed on a staircase within the residential complex where he lived. According to reports, his body was still warm and clean. He had no blood on him, but visible abrasions could be seen, indicating a possible assault. When relatives were notified, Jayden-Lee was rushed to the hospital; however, he was declared dead on arrival. This is a developing story. 'He acted decisively': Ndlozi supports Ramaphosa's decision amid criticism

Acting Gauteng police commissioner's driver survives 'attempted hijacking'
Gauteng police are investigating a case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property after a driver who was supposed to collect acting provincial commissioner Maj-Gen Fred Kekana was allegedly attacked by unknown suspects in Westonaria. Kekana said on Monday the driver noticed a suspicious BMW following him and came under attack as he was about to park the vehicle. 'The passenger in that BMW smashed the window with an iron rod, not knowing that the windows are protected. The driver had to defend himself, and the thugs dropped the firearm and ran away. 'That's what happened. It's under investigation,' he said. She said it is reported the constable was driving a state vehicle around Westonaria when a blue BMW vehicle stopped next to him and smashed the driver's window with an unknown object. 'The constable swiftly reacted and fired shots, prompting the suspects to speed off, leaving a firearm behind, which was later discovered to be a toy gun.
