New BBC drama smashes records despite viewers ‘switching off' after 5 minutesNew
BBC's new cosy crime drama Death Valley has smashed an impressive record already despite some less-than-enthusiastic reviews of the show.
The six-episode Timothy Spall comedy-drama secured a whopping 2.9million viewers in its overnight ratings for the first episode.
This not only made it the biggest audience for a new BBC Scripted Comedy title in five years but it even beat David Mitchell's fellow crime-solving sitcom Ludwig which landed 2.8million viewers for its premiere in September.
The unexpected frontrunner, which came out last week, follows retired TV actor John Chapel (Spall) who has made a name for himself as a crime-solving sleuth the likes of Poirot and Sherlock.
When one of his groupies DS Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth) tracks him down she hopes he can help her crack some mysteries and climb the career ladder in one fell swoop.
It's already been compared to everything from Gavin and Stacey (which has broken its own record or two) to Midsomer Murders as we witness the hijinks of this chaotic duo.
But not everyone has had glowing thoughts about the show.
'Five mins & switching off – this is AWFUL soooooo baaad,' X user Philgals Swigott wrote.
'I really wanted to like Death Valley on BBC1, but it's beyond terrible,' SonnerSounds added.
'Sorry, but I could only watch a quarter of an hour of this before turning off and cancelling all future recordings,' CaroleBlain shared.
Anne Sharman called it 'so dreadful on every level' and Robert Halpert said it was '45 minutes of life' they aren't getting back.#
Of course, it has also managed to win over some viewers.
'I will watch Timothy Spall in anything, and Death Valley seems pretty good so far,' Roz Laws shared.
'Contrary to those who hate it I'm loving Death Valley so far,' Signoramac declared.
'Only ten minutes in but Death Valley is a breath of fresh air,' Danny Denay echoed.
And if it's following the footsteps of Ludwig (also starring Anna Maxwell Martin), we can expect a season two renewal sooner rather than later.
So there's likely more to come for this plucky young detective and our reclusive actor.
Speaking about their dynamic to Radio Times, the Bafta-winning Harry Potter star said: 'They recognise each other instantly in their souls. They cut straight through any generational difference, any bizarre sexual difference or anything like that.'
He described it more akin to an 'uncle and niece' aesthetic. More Trending
It's been a standout run for BBC comedies over the past year.
In December, the epic Gavin and Stacey finale drew in 19.3million viewersmaking it the 'most-watched scripted show across all broadcasters and streamers since current records began in 2002'.
Not an easy feat.

Doctor Who's Billie Piper issues cryptic eight-word statement after finale twist
Billie Piper has broken her silence, hinting at the possibility of taking over from Ncuti Gatwa as the iconic Doctor Who character. In a stunning twist in Saturday night's finale, fans were left reeling as Ncuti departed from his role as the enigmatic Time Lord. The gripping two-part season climax featured the Doctor's confrontation with the cunning Rani amidst a moral quandary to save a child, ending in the Doctor's heartfelt departure to Belinda Chandra, portrayed by Varada Sethu, with the poignant words: "I hope you'll see me again, but not like this." In an unforeseen turn of events, Billie emerged, post-regeneration, throwing into question whether she will indeed be the new face of the Doctor henceforth. Interestingly, the closing credits introduced Billie Piper without confirming her as the next Doctor, leaving viewers eagerly speculating with the caption 'Introducing Billie Piper'. Billie is no stranger to the Whoniverse, having played Rose Tyler alongside Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor back in 2005. With Jodie Whittaker leading the way as the first female incarnation of the Time Lord, Billie could potentially be the next woman to step into the Doctor's shoes, reports the Manchester Evening News. Following the broadcast, Billie shared her affection for the series in a statement, which read: "It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that TARDIS one more time was just something I couldn't refuse, but who, how, why and when, you'll just have to wait and see." Following the latest Doctor Who episode, Billie also took to Instagram with a cryptic eight-word post that read: "A rose is a rose is a rose!!!" This was written alongside throwback snaps from her time as Rose Tyler, the Doctor's companion. The BBC shared a heartfelt statement from Ncuti Gatwa, expressing his sentiments on leaving the iconic role as he said: "You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it." He continued, reflecting on his tenure as the Doctor: "This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever. There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe. "The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show and I can't thank the Whoniverse, and the Whovians, enough for welcoming me in, and making this such a touching experience." Ncuti also acknowledged the inevitable departure, adding: "I've loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have." Concluding his statement, he expressed his lasting connection to the series, saying: "I'll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor." Russell T Davies, the Doctor Who showrunner, paid tribute to Ncuti's performance, praising: "What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti!". "As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years, are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti's great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights." Doctor Who is available to catch up now on BBC iPlayer.

Doctor Who fans spots star's major hint that Billie Piper would return to show
Doctor Who fans went wild last night when Billie Piper was revealed as the new Doctor on the sci-fi series, which Billie starred in previously as companion, Rose Tyler Eagle-eyed Doctor Who fans reckon Billie Piper was always destined to return to the BBC series after she was dramatically revealed as the new Doctor last night. Whovians across the country were sent into a frenzy when the current Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, regenerated in Saturday's show, and Billie, who played companion Rose Tyler in the series from 2005 to 2006, appeared in his place. Billie, 42, said she 'couldn't refuse' the opportunity to step back into the Tardis after her epic casting in the titular role was revealed and now fans say they've spotted a huge clue that the actress would return. During an unearthed fan convention for the sci-fi series in America in 2021, former Dr Who star, Christopher Ecclestone gives his take on who should be the next Doctor. As the audience lets out a squeal of excitement, he declared: "I think the new Doctor should be Billie Piper actually." Posting the clip on X, several fans hinted that Billie was always going to return to the Doctor Who as one shared a meme of Christopher saying: 'Absolutely fantastic' with the caption: "Chris looking at the TV yesterday be like." Meanwhile, another fan replied: "Was probably his favourite episode of the show since he left." Chris, who starred as the ninth incantation of the Doctor in 2005, counted Billie's Rose among his companions. Revealing she couldn't turn down the opportunity to come back to the show, the actress, who also made cameo appearances in the series in 2008 and 2010, said: "I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn't refuse." Reacting to Billie's reveal in Saturday's show, self-confessed Whovian, Rylan Clarke, who popped up in Doctor Who two weeks ago, told fans he was probably going to 'regret' his emotional post, but shared - with tears streaming down his face - "I'll probably look back at this with real embarrassment, but I've just watched Doctor Who and I don't know what's just happened. Omg, it's unbelievable. What a turn out." Sharing the heartfelt message, showrunner, Russell T Davies, replied to the TV presenter, saying: "Love you Rylan" with a big red heart emoji. Billie replaces Ncuti Gatwa in the role, who said it had been honour to play the Doctor, which is one of TV's most coveted roles. In a statement released by the BBC, he said: "You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. "The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show, and I can't thank the Whoniverse, and the Whovians, enough for welcoming me in and making this such a touching experience. "This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever. There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe. "I've loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. "I'll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor."
