Gujarat: Junagadh's Sakkarbaug Zoo leads nation in Indian Grey Wolf conservation success

India Gazette19-06-2025
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 19 (ANI): India's dedication to wildlife preservation ensures that future generations can enjoy and benefit from the country's rich natural heritage. Among the many species requiring urgent attention is the Indian Grey Wolf (Canis lupus pallipes), an endangered carnivore facing threats from habitat loss and human conflict, said a statement from the CMO.
Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the proactive guidance of Gujarat's Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat has made remarkable progress in conserving this vital species.
At the forefront of these efforts is the historic Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh, designated by the Central Zoo Authority of India as the coordinating zoo for the Indian Grey Wolf Conservation Breeding Program (CBP).
Through scientific management, state-of-the-art facilities, and focused breeding initiatives, Sakkarbaug Zoo has become a beacon of hope for the protection and revival of the Indian Grey Wolf, securing its place in India's natural legacy.
This program for wolves is one such initiative reflecting this commitment. Through focused efforts in nutrition, healthcare, behavioral enrichment, and breeding management, the program has shown remarkable success. The year-wise birth data of wolf pups is as follows: 14 pups were born in 2019-20, 7 in 2020-21, 31 in 2021-22, 33 in 2022-23, 40 in 2023-24, and 48 in 2024-25. This indicates a steady improvement in breeding success over the years, showcasing the effectiveness of comprehensive care and conservation strategies implemented at the facility.
All wolves in CBP are provided a quality diet based on their natural requirements. Additional supplements are added to their diet if required. Food items and drinking water are periodically screened at a food testing laboratory to ensure safety and quality.
Regular health checks of all wolves are conducted through the collection of various samples for early disease detection and to assess the health status of each wolf. Timely medical interventions are provided whenever necessary. Each animal enclosure is equipped with a separate night shelter and kraal to protect wolves during extreme climatic conditions.
A specific hygiene schedule for wolves is prepared and strictly followed. Vaccination of all wolves against prevalent diseases is carried out regularly. Deworming is done at three-month intervals. Post-vaccination, antibody protection levels are monitored by collecting relevant samples. Pairing of breeding animals is done using genetically diverse individuals. Newly paired animals are closely monitored. Compatibility is regularly assessed, and changes are made as needed.
Behavioral enrichment of wolves is carried out using various methods such as nutritional, olfactory, and habitat enrichments to encourage the expression of natural behaviour in captivity. All wolves are monitored round-the-clock through CCTV cameras to observe behaviours such as mating, pregnancy, pup care, and feeding, especially those not visible in the presence of humans.
After successful mating, males are separated from females to provide privacy and promote denning behaviour. Periodic hormonal monitoring of pregnant females is done by collecting samples. Medical interventions are provided as required. Additional feed supplements and focused care are ensured during pregnancy for maintaining a healthy condition. Near-natural dens and soft raw materials are provided to support den-making behaviour. For growth and health monitoring of pups, regular weighing and health assessments are conducted. Medical intervention is done as needed.
As Gujarat continues to lead in wildlife conservation, the success story of the Indian Grey Wolf serves as an inspiring model for preserving biodiversity and restoring ecological balance in India's diverse landscapes. (ANI)

30 booked, 1 arrested over TIPRA Motha attack on BJP supporters listening to PM Modi's Mann Ki Baat: Tripura police

After alleged TIPRA Motha men attacked BJP supporters listening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mann Ki Baat radio address in Tripura's Khowai district on Sunday, the police made an arrest on Monday in connection with the incident. Speaking to reporters, Ranaditya Das, Superintendent of Police, Khowai, identified the arrested accused as Rintu Debbarma. 'We are conducting an extensive search operation to arrest all accused persons named in the FIR,' he said of the 29 others booked in the case. The TIPRA Motha is a ruling ally of the BJP. The attack in the Asharambari area landed the tribal party in a tight spot as Chief Minister Manik Saha said his government would not tolerate political violence. 'Strongly condemn the violent & undemocratic attack by TIPRA Motha party workers during Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi Ji's #MannKiBaat programme at Asharambari. Several BJP karyakartas injured, 3 undergoing treatment at GB Hospital. I visited the hospital, instructed doctors to provide best care & directed police to take strict action against perpetrators. Such disgraceful acts won't be tolerated,' he wrote on social media after visiting Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital on Sunday night. Describing the incident, BJP tribal leader Bipin Debbarma said that TIPRA Motha men armed with machetes and countrymade guns attacked BJP supporters and also damaged 10-15 motorcycles and two cars. State BJP media in-charge Sunit Sarkar told reporters that the TIPRA Motha's lone minister, Animesh Debbarma, was looking into the issue, while BJP leaders were also trying to find out what led to the incident. Debbarma represents the Asharambari constituency. For his part, TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said in a Facebook video on Sunday, 'I don't want political violence in Tripura. If tribals keep fighting each other in the name of flags, one day flags will be all that's left, land will be lost. You can do politics two months before elections. Till then, keep thansa (unity) as tribals. The fool thinks that money is more important than the future of our children. If anyone can do politics, they can do. Tell the truth with courage, expose what is happening in our state and whatever is wrong. But there is no point in fighting or being violent. Politely state your disagreements, if any. But why should anyone become violent? If a brother assaults another brother, then outsiders laugh at us. What are you fighting for? Some facilities, some policies…? My appeal to you is think of the future of your children. The politics of violence will not give us anything.'

Karnataka minister addresses heart attack deaths: ‘No increase, nothing to panic'

"Getting your heart checked once a year is sufficient. There's no need to panic and visit hospitals out of fear," said Sharan Prakash Patil, Karnataka's minister for medical education on Tuesday. The belief that these cases are occurring only in Hassan is incorrect, Patil said.(ANI) 'The average number of heart attack cases is similar to last year,' Patil said, clarifying that there is no need to panic over the reportedly 'increasing' cases of heart attacks. 'The government is taking appropriate measures,' he affirmed. What caused panic in the state? Patil noted that after reports of a surge in heart attack cases in the state's Hassan district, patients have been swarming hospitals like the renowned Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, in Bengaluru. 'There has been a rise in people seeking preventive checks as well. This has created an unusual situation,' he added. He assured that a study is being conducted on the deaths of 24 individuals in Hassan. Further talking of the deaths in Hassan, he said that based on preliminary findings, among the 24 cases, only 10 were due to heart attacks and that the remaining were due to other causes. Does Covid-19 vaccine trigger heart attacks? Patil clarified that there is no link between the Covid-19 vaccine and the heart attack cases. 'People should not doubt the vaccine. The belief that these cases are occurring only in Hassan is incorrect,' he confirmed. Patil further explained that the lifestyle changes brought by the post Covid scenario have led to a rise in diabetes and blood pressure cases. "Dietary habits have changed, and stress levels have increased. We are studying the reasons behind the rise in deaths among youth," he added. 'Focus on lifestyle' Patil urged people to focus on leading a healthy lifestyle instead of being scared of heart attacks. He stressed on getting adequate sleep, and exercising regularly. 'Only those showing symptoms of heart-related illness should go for a medical check-up. Don't rush to hospitals without a reason,' he advised. Have heart attack cases increased in the state? An expert analysis led by cardiologist KS Ravindranath at Bengaluru's Jayadeva Hospital discovered that the number of deaths from heart attacks has not increased. According to a release by the authorities, in January, 178 people were admitted, with 11 deaths reported. In February, 10 out of 181 patients died, in March, 9 out of 200 died and in Bengaluru, 2,165 were hospitalised, with 101 deaths reported. Do children need screening? Karnataka health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that there is no need for screening children for heart diseases. 'We will be organising awareness programmes through Jayadeva Hospital. We are also taking strict action on roadside food vendors and unhygienic food preparation methods,' he said. Reiterating what Patil said about a healthy lifestyle, Rao urged people to stick to traditional dietary practices. He also recommended yoga as a highly beneficial habit.
