Everything We Know About Netflix's ‘Best of the Best'

Ellea day ago
The upcoming Netflix feature Best of the Best starring Hasan Minhaj was first announced in 2023, with Flora & Ulysses director Lena Khan set to direct. Two years later the Bollywood-style comedy focused on the world of collegiate-level dance competitions is really coming together.
Here's everything we know about the movie so far.
Maya and Anjali are two childhood best friends who find the dynamic of their relationship changes after joining their college's competitive Bollywood dance team. In the team's quest to win the national championship, both girls discover just how cutthroat the experience of traditional dance can get. Per Variety, the story celebrates 'the vibrancy of Bollywood Fusion Dance, the growing pains of young adulthood and the lasting power of friendship.'
On July 17, Variety reported that Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan had joined Minhaj along with Everything To Me's Priyanka Kedia. Khan had directed Ramakrishnan in several episodes of her hit show on Netflix. The actress seemed to refer to training for the new role in an Instagram post about the film, writing in the caption, 'my body is sore but my heart is full💗💃🏾.'
Kedia celebrated the news she was joining the cast as well, writing in a post, 'the most surreal announcement i never could have imagined i'd get to make. from the bottom of my heart thank you thank you thank you for making that little girl's (and her parents') dreams come true. this is going to be such an insanely special one. get ready!!!!!!!!!!!! 🥹❤️'
The script was penned by Minhaj and Prashanth Venkataramanujam, who are also producing, along with Jonathan Eirich and Ryan Halprin for Rideback.
This post will be updated.

POP MART Joins Forces with BlueX to Launch a New Era of Toy-Based RWA and Ignite a Global Blind Box Meme Craze

07/21/2025, Bangkok // PRODIGY: Feature Story // According to official sources from BlueX, the Web3 infrastructure platform is currently in strategic discussions with collectible toy giant POP MART to explore the on-chain transformation of its iconic blind box IPs. The discussions center around introducing these beloved characters into the Web3 space as Real World Assets (RWAs), with a focus on collaborative expansion across Southeast Asia and beyond. The collaboration scope reportedly includes — but is not limited to — digital IP rights confirmation, on-chain blind box transactions, joint Meme IP creation, and the design of a new 'RWA Blind Box' issuance mechanism. The initiative will begin with POP MART's well-known character 'TwinkleTwinkle', aiming to turn collectible toys into structured, tradable digital assets, and expand their use across the broader cultural-financial landscape. 'We believe collectible toys hold not only emotional value, but also asset value,' said a representative from BlueX. 'Through on-chain authentication and asset modeling, the IP economy can evolve beyond collectibles into a new class of digital assets — gaining both financial and user engagement capabilities.' POP MART's 'TwinkleTwinkle' to Lead the Leap On-Chain 'TwinkleTwinkle,' part of POP MART's 'Stellaroo' lineup, is a newly launched IP signed in 2024. Known for its soft and heartwarming design, the character has quickly risen to prominence in the designer toy world. Made up of tiny stars with rosy cheeks, 'TwinkleTwinkle' embodies both childlike innocence and subtle adult emotion, telling stories of courage, longing, and love. Inspired by starlight in darkness, the character is designed to offer a romantic fairytale world for adults who still dream. Since its debut, TwinkleTwinkle has become a major emotional icon for young collectors and remains a top-selling blind box IP. As part of POP MART's international strategy, the character frequently appears in Southeast Asian and Japanese retail spaces and brand collaborations. If realized, this partnership with BlueX would mark the character's first entry into the Web3 space. BlueX has already developed an on-chain Meme-style virtual character based on TwinkleTwinkle and is preparing to launch a series of interactive Web3 experiences to bridge fans of the IP with decentralized digital ecosystems. Toy IP + RWA: Cultural Assets Enter the Chain Today, RWAs represent one of Web3's most compelling narratives. Unlike traditional RWAs such as real estate or bonds, BlueX is pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a 'real-world asset' by experimenting with collectible IPs as tokenized cultural assets. This approach enhances the liquidity and transparency of collectibles while opening new monetization models for IP owners. From on-chain rights confirmation and tiered asset structuring, to IP meme generation, NFT circulation, and financial composability, BlueX aims to build a multi-dimensional RWA framework where traditionally offline collectibles become 'living' digital assets. The collaboration between BlueX and POP MART has officially begun, with the first batch of co-branded visuals completed. More information is expected to be released in the coming weeks. Epstein Podcasts, Books, Documentaries Skyrocket As Trump Connection Scrutinized

Renewed scrutiny of Jeffrey Epstein's relationship to President Donald Trump and calls for the government to release all of its information on the convicted sex offender have re-sparked the public's fascination with the Epstein case and pushed podcasts, documentaries and books about his scandal to the top of most-watched lists. FILTHY RICH: (L to R) Chauntae Davies and Jeffrey Epstein in episode 3 of FILTHY RICH. Cr. NETFLIX © ... More 2020 Netflix Courtesy of Netflix Views of Netflix's 2020 docuseries 'Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich' spiked 268% between the week of July 4-10 and the most recent tracking week, from July 11-17, according to Luminate data. The docuseries, which has four episodes, was watched for 13.6 million minutes last week, up from 3.7 million minutes the week before. On Apple's list of top podcasts Monday, seven of the 24 most-listened-to episodes touched on the latest drama surrounding Epstein and the federal government, with a three-day-old Pod Save America episode titled "Trump's Secret Epstein Letter Revealed" in the No. 1 spot. Other top episodes came from Tucker Carlson, Ezra Klein of The New York Times, Megyn Kelly, Ben Shapiro, Tim Dillon and NPR's "Up First." Harper Collins, which published reporter Julie Brown's 2021 book 'Perversion of Justice" about Epstein, confirmed to CNN it has ordered a third printing of the book after it sold out in recent weeks online and at brick-and-mortar stores. YouTube videos on the topic updated in the last week from "The Daily Show," "The Late Show," MSNBC, "Late Night," Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens and others have already racked up millions of views. In early July, the Justice Department said it would not be making any more of its investigative files on Epstein available to the public despite promises from Attorney General Pam Bondi, and said there is no "Epstein client list" as touted by the Trump administration. Bondi said earlier this year that a dossier of clients for whom Epstein trafficked underage girls not only existed but was 'sitting on my desk' waiting to be released. Weeks ago, however, the Trump administration walked back the statement, claiming Epstein did not have a client list and Bondi was instead referring to the documents in their entirety. Pressure to release more documents has built both from within Trump's base and from Democrats seizing on their anger. Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., last week sponsored an amendment in the House Rules Committee that could have forced Congress to vote on whether to release the documents, but some Republicans blocked the measure. Trump then told Bondi to release grand jury documents related to Epstein, and she said she would ask the court to unseal the filings, but it could take months for any documents to actually be released—if it happens at all. Trump's directive for Bondi to release the grand jury documents came after The Wall Street Journal reported he sent Epstein a suggestive letter for his 50th birthday in 2003. The card allegedly included a drawing of a naked woman and a message telling Epstein, 'Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.' Trump has denied being behind the letter, while Donald Trump Jr. called the report 'insanity' and said it doesn't match his father's 'very specific way of speaking" and right-wing activist Jack Posobiec called the article a "hit piece." Trump has called reports of the letter 'fake news' and has sued media mogul Rupert Murdoch and The Wall Street Journal's publisher over the report. Investigations into Epstein became mainstream pop culture fodder after his 2019 arrest on federal charges of sex trafficking minors. He died in his jail cell one month later, while awaiting trial. His death was ruled a suicide but launched a series of conspiracy theories, including that was murdered to cover up compromising information about his powerful and wealthy friends. Netflix released "Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich" in 2020, and the Lifetime documentary Surviving Jeffrey Epstein premiered months later. There were reports at the time that HBO and Sony Pictures were considering developing shows on Epstein's life and death, but they have not come to fruition. There are several books on the Epstein scandal, most notably Brown's "Perversion of Justice" and a 2016 book from James Patterson's true crime series, 'Filthy Rich,' which CNN reports has moved up Amazon's sales chart in recent days. A half-dozen podcasts have examined the Epstein case, including Brown's "BROKEN: Jeffery Epstein," "Truth & Lies: Jeffrey Epstein" by ABC News and Wondery's "The Mysterious Mr. Epstein." George Clooney ‘Forced' Jack Black to Break Up Tenacious D After Trump Assassination Comment, Journalist Claims

In a long interview with former President Joe Biden's son Hunter, reporter Andrew Callaghan alleges that George Clooney ordered Jack Black to break up Tenacious D after the duo's guitarist Kyle Gass asked that Thomas Matthew Crooks, who allegedly attempted to assassinate Donald Trump in 2024, 'aim a little higher next time.' Reps for Clooney and Jack Black did not immediately respond to Variety's requests for comment. More from Variety Shaunagh Connaire, Former Communications Director for George and Amal Clooney's Justice Foundation, Sets Directorial Debut 'Brown Bread' (EXCLUSIVE) CNN's Live 'Good Night, and Good Luck' Telecast Spurs Special Coverage CNN to Exclusively Air George Clooney's Record-Breaking Broadway Hit 'Good Night, and Good Luck' Live for Free Two and a half hours into the video, following a claim that George Clooney's wife Amal was responsible for a full-page advertisement requesting an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Callaghan says, 'My only really famous Hollywood friend is actor Jack Black, we used to be neighbors in [Los Angeles], and Tenancious D did a concert in Sydney Australia, and, this is the day after they tried to assassinate Trump, and I guess Jack Black's guitarist or whatever jumps up on stage, and he yells something into the effect of 'Hey, next time you try to shoot Trump, aim a little bit closer.'' (That is not a verbatim recounting of the quote.) He continues, 'George Clooney is blowing his phone up, being like, 'If you don't kick your bandmember out of the band and, like, publicly denounce this guy — like I don't know what the consequences were, but it was kind of like, 'You're out!' Out of what, we don't know. And so his hand was basically forced to be like, 'Oh, sorry, my bandmember has serious mental-health problems. We're breaking up the band for now. The tour is canceled.'' (That also is not an entirely accurate recounting of events.) 'And so,' he continues, ' mean, it is cool to see Hollywood actors voice more progressive opinions, but…' 'Fuck him!' Biden shouts. 'Fuck him and everybody around him!' He then launches into a long tirade about Clooney. 'I don't have to be fucking nice! Number one. I agree with Quentin Tarantino. Fucking George Clooney is not a fucking actor. He is a fucking, like, I don't know what he is. He's a brand.' Biden then abruptly changes tack to say nice things about Clooney. 'And by the way and God bless him, you know what? He supposedly treats his friends really well, he buys them things and he's got a really great place in Lake Como and he's great friends with Barack Obama. Fuck you! What do you have to do with fucking anything? Why do I have to fucking listen to you?' He then continues his tirade about Clooney's alleged efforts to tear down former President Biden. See the full video below. On July 14, 2024, Tenacious D was performing at the ICC Sydney Theatre on, the day after the Trump rally shooting in Butler, Pa., where the current president was apparently grazed in the ear by a bullet allegedly fired by Crooks. At the show, Black presented a cake to Gass on stage to celebrate the latter's 64th birthday. When Black asked Gass to make a wish, Gass responded: 'Don't miss Trump next time.' 'I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday,' Black said in a statement at the time. 'I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.' He continued, 'After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.' Best of Variety New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week 'Harry Potter' TV Show Cast Guide: Who's Who in Hogwarts?
