Macron arrived in Hanoi on Sunday, marking the first trip to Vietnam by a French president in nearly a decade.
After Vietnam, Macron will then go to
Indonesia and finish up in
Singapore , where he will speak at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's top defence conference.
Macron's visit comes as France and the
European Union aim to strengthen their commercial ties in Asia to offset uncertainty over US President
Donald Trump's tariff measures.

Hong Kong's food delivery scene soars with drone services to Ma On Shan

Food delivery in Hong Kong has reached a new height as a major provider has started to use drones to send orders, cutting waiting time by 35 minutes. The service, provided by Keeta Drone, a subsidiary of mainland Chinese food delivery giant Meituan, delivers orders from two fast-food restaurants in Science Park to a landing zone on Ma On Shan Promenade. The operator said it was planning to expand the service to other locations in the new town using the company's automatic kiosk system. 'The reason that we chose the Science Park and Ma On Shan area is because this is considered a relatively low-risk area with the bay separating the two [areas],' said Mao Yinian, vice-president of Meituan and the president of Keeta Drone. Keeta is one of two food delivery platforms operating in Hong Kong, along with Foodpanda, following the exit of London-based Deliveroo from the Hong Kong market in April. The new service, which will cost Keeta customers HK$30 (US$3.80) in delivery fees, will see travelling time for their orders to Ma On Shan Park cut down to only five minutes compared with the 40 minutes when orders are delivered by bicycle.

Who will win the AI contest of the century?

The arrival of artificial intelligence, robotics and new technology has been heralded as a game changer. But how will it unfold, and who will be able to take advantage of AI to win the contest of the century: the United States, China or some other country? Advertisement Writing in Foreign Affairs in 2023, James Manyika, senior vice-president of technology and society at Google, and Nobel laureate economist Michael Spence argued that 'by the beginning of the next decade, the shift to AI could become a leading driver of global prosperity'. These gains would come from not just the rapid advances in AI in creating new content and applications in daily life, but also its rapid spread through the democratisation of innovation. But for it to happen, Manyika and Spence say, we need a new policy framework as well as a new mindset towards AI, and that 'AI technologies must be embraced as tools that can enhance, rather than undermine, human potential and ingenuity'. I think the AI revolution has arrived faster than expected. So far, it looks like the US and China are in a two-horse race, with the others still struggling to catch up for various reasons. My thesis is that no country can afford not to encourage AI adoption to enhance national productivity and avoid the digital knowledge divide. Those who do not will become marginalised. The contest of the century is thus between all countries. In this cutthroat race, with Big Tech seeking to dominate the 'pay-by-subscription' game, we may end up being mentally and financially colonised in different tech domains. Advertisement This is where the Global South can innovate its way through open-access systems that meet individual or local needs, without giving away valuable data by choosing to follow one algorithm platform or becoming locked into 'pay for upgrade' contracts.

Xi-Trump phone call fails to spark much enthusiasm on Chinese factory floors

As two of the world's most powerful leaders – President Xi Jinping and US counterpart Donald Trump – exchanged rare conciliatory words in a phone call that signalled a potential thaw in China-US tensions, the mood on factory floors in China remained far more restrained. Exhausted by continual policy shifts and disillusioned by Trump's volatility, many manufacturers are delaying major moves until clearer signals emerge. 'No one jumps on Trump's word any more,' said Winnie Lam, general secretary to the board of the Hong Kong Business Association Vietnam. 'Especially, no one will make any long-term decision when it is not a signed agreement, Vietnam-US or China-US. 'If a project is on hold, the status remains as is. Those going ahead are forging ahead. Not seeing any sudden pullback at this point.' During their conversation on Thursday, the first in two months, Xi and Trump discussed the troubled trade relationship between China and the United States, Chinese rare earth exports and overseas students. They also extended invitations for visits to their respective national capitals.
