Jefferson-Wooden and Lyles storm to victories at US trials

Kuwait Times05-08-2025
EUGENE: Noah Lyles laid down a world championship marker with a blistering 200m victory at the US trials in Oregon on Sunday as Melissa Jefferson-Wooden completed a sprint double in the women's event. The final day of action at Eugene's Hayward Field saw Lyles come from behind to win a testy battle with Kenny Bednarek in a world-leading 19.63secs. After edging in front of Bednarek just before the line, Lyles turned his head to stare down his rival as he took the tape. That drew an angry response from Bednarek, who shoved the reigning 100m and 200m world champion as the two men slowed down after the finish.
Lyles, the Olympic 100m champion who already had a bye into September's Worlds in Tokyo, refused to be drawn on his spat with Bednarek. 'Under coach's orders, no comment,' Lyles said afterwards. But Bednarek, a double Olympic 200m silver medalist, was more expansive. 'What he said doesn't matter, it's just what he did,' Bednarek said, referring to Lyles' finish-line stare. 'That's unsportsmanlike, and I don't deal with that ... I don't deal with any of that stuff. It's not good character,' added Bednarek, who took second in a season's best 19.67secs.
In the women's sprints meanwhile, Jefferson-Wooden signaled she could well be the woman to beat in Tokyo after completing her 100m-200m double, winning the 200m in 21.84secs, with Anavia Battle second in 22.12secs. Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas just squeaked into the Tokyo squad, finishing third in a photo finish with Brittany Brown. 'As long as I'm executing my race the way I know I can, then the times are going to continue to come,' Jefferson-Wooden said. 'And 21.84 I'll take.'
Brazier comeback
While Jefferson-Wooden is looking forward to Tokyo, Sha'Carri Richardson will only compete in the 100m at the World Championships. Richardson, arrested for domestic violence last week following a clash with boyfriend Christian Coleman, failed to qualify for the 200m final. Coleman also failed to qualify in the 200m, but will go to Tokyo as part of the US relay pool. Elsewhere Sunday, Olympic 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin coasted to victory in 46.89secs to seal his spot in Tokyo.
In the women's 400m hurdles, 35-year-old 2016 Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad rolled back the years with a victory in 52.65secs, setting up what will be an emotional farewell in Japan in her final season before retirement. In one of the races of the day, former world champion Donavan Brazier capped a sensational return to form with a battling victory in the 800m. Brazier won gold at the World Championships in Doha in 2019, but subsequently saw his career blown off course by multiple injuries which required surgery. He only returned to racing this season after a three-year absence from the track.
The 28-year-old left that injury nightmare firmly in the rearview mirror on Sunday, though, punching through a gap in the final straight to take the tape in a personal best of 1min 42.16secs, just ahead of 16-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus, who took second. Lutkenhaus' time of 1:42.27 was a new under-18 world record. Bryce Hoppel was third in 1:42.49. 'The past few years have been really rough for me,' Brazier said. 'To finally have a chance at redemption, and just showcase resiliency - I was really happy to do it today. It was just pure grit.'
In the women's 800m final, former Under-20 world champion Roisin Willis reached her first major championships with a battling victory in 1min 59.26secs. Willis finished ahead of Maggi Congdon (1:59.39), with Sage Hurta-Klecker third in 1:59.48. In the 110m hurdles, Ja'Kobe Tharp won in 13.01secs. Olympic and world champion Grant Holloway, who has a bye to the world championships, scratched from the final. In the women's pole vault, three-time world championships silver-medalist Sandi Morris edged reigning world champion Katie Moon into second place with a winning height of 4.83m. — AFP

Duplantis sets new pole vault world record of 6.29m

BUDAPEST: Sweden's Armand Duplantis celebrates with fans after setting a new pole vault world record at 6,29m during the men's pole vault event of the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in Budapest, Hungary. – AFP BUDAPEST: Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis bettered his pole vault world record by a centimeter on Tuesday, clearing 6.29 meters at the athletics meet in Budapest. Sweden's Duplantis broke the world record for the 13th time as he soared over the bar at the second attempt to improve on his 6.28m from Stockholm in June. It was the 25-year-old's third record of 2025 having also cleared 6.27m in Clermont-Ferrand in February. Duplantis notched up his 33rd competition victory, clearing 6.11m on his first attempt to finish ahead of Greece's Emmanouil Karalis (6.02m) and Australia's Kurtis Marschall (5.83m). On his second attempt at 6.29m, Duplantis touched the bar with one leg and his stomach, but it held, and the jump was validated. Since Ukrainian Sergey Bubka became the first athlete to clear 6 meters on July 13, 1985 in Paris, the world record has been broken 26 times, including 12 times by Bubka, 13 times by Duplantis and once by Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie. The US-born Duplantis first broke the world record in 2020 with 6.17m. Duplantis is favorite for a third consecutive outdoor world title in a month's time in Tokyo. On the track Jamaican sprinter Bryan Levell laid down a marker for those championships by posting the third quickest time this year to win the men's 200m. — AFP The 21-year-old, who reached the semi-finals at last year's Olympics, headed into the race with a season's best of 20.10. He pulled away from the field in the home straight to win in 19.69 to clock the third best time of the year behind the Americans Noah Lyles (19.63sec) and Kenneth Bednarek (19.67sec). Levell smashed Erriyon Knighton's meeting record by 0.19sec leaving South African veteran Wayde van Niekerk a distant runner-up in 20.07. Olympic bronze medallist Muzala Samukonga held off Jereem Richards and Khaleb McRae to win the men's 400m in a season's best of 44.11 while Laban Kipkorir Chepkwony, who finished fourth at Kenya's World Trials last month, won the men's 800m in a personal best of 1min 42.96sec, breaking David Rudisha's meeting record from 2016. Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce only managed a fourth-placed finish in the women's 100m as Ivorian sprinter Marie-Josee Ta Lou Smith held off Tina Clayton and world 200m champion Shericka Jackson. – AFP

Richardson apologizes to Coleman, speaks about domestic violence

EUGENE: (FILES) Christian Coleman looks on after the Xfinity Men's 200m final during the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. – AFP LOS ANGELES: Reigning world 100-meters champion Sha'Carri Richardson apologized to Christian Coleman on Tuesday and spoke out on her domestic violence arrest last month. The 25-year-old US sprint star, who took 100m silver at last year's Paris Olympics and the 2023 world crown at Budapest, was arrested on July 27 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after shoving boyfriend Coleman. Both competed days later at the US championships in Eugene, Oregon, where Coleman, who reportedly did not press charges, said she should not have been arrested. Richardson, nevertheless, apologized in an Instagram posting about the incident. 'I apologize to Christian. He came into my life and gave me more than a relationship but a greater understanding of unconditional love from what I've experienced in my past,' Richardson wrote. 'Due to my past trauma and pain, I was blind and blocked off to not only receive it but give it. I love him and to him I can't apologize enough.' In a video on social media, Richardson said she put herself 'in a compromised situation' and has done 'definitely a lot of self-reflection.' and 'I hold myself accountable' for her actions. 'I'm taking this time to not only see myself but get myself a certain level of help that overall is going to reflect who I truly am in my heart and my spirit and not allowing this moment—but accepting this moment—to be more.' Richardson said she wanted to be held accountable to be her best self by family and fans. 'I refuse to run away but to face everything that comes to me head on because everything on the other side is great but you've got to go through in order to get there,' she said. Richardson withdrew from the 100m semi-finals at the US meet but because she is the reigning 100 world champion she has qualified for the event at the World Championships next month in Tokyo. — AFP
