John McArdle-trained My Gladiola primed for Caulfield return in 2025 Quezette Stakes

News.com.au2 days ago
Mornington trainer John McArdle would love a breeding school of thought to apply to My Gladiola in a campaign that will start in Saturday's Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield.
Breeding scholars have long believed the stock of champion stallion I Am Invincible improved significantly from their two-year-old to three-year-old seasons.
'Hopefully they're right,' McArdle said.
McArdle's daughter of I Am Invincible, My Gladiola, showed abundant talent in her two-year-old season, winning a Group 3 race on debut and running second in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude at her second start.
My Gladiola was spelled after a tough run in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield.
McArdle said My Gladiola put on weight during her time off, requiring the grey to have three jumpouts leading up to her return to racing at Caulfield.
'She's had three jumpouts and been in work for a long time but she did go to the paddock straight after the Blue Diamond and she had a couple of months off,' McArdle said.
'She did get a bit heavy so we just brought her back into work and pottered around with her.
'She was a powerful enough girl as it was but she's certainly got bigger and stronger so hopefully that equates to improved performance.'
My Gladiola's pedigree indicated she was a sprinting type but McArdle said he would cover all bases with his spring entries for the smart prospect.
"This has been a smart effort."

'Going by all the data and everything, she's still got a bit of improvement in her but she's got a bit of a spring ahead of her,' McArdle said.
'Initially, I think she's similar (to her dam), a 1000 to 1200(m) horse but we'll let her tell us.
Thousand Guineas but she'll also look towards the Coolmore (Stud Stakes).
'There's a lot of options for three-year-old fillies in the spring.'

A-League: Tisserand to set to join Sydney FC

Sydney FC's defence is set to be boosted by the signing of Congo international Marcel Tisserand. Tisserand joins the Sky Blues as a free agent after spending the past three years in Saudi Arabia, where he had spells with Al-Ettifaq, Abha and Al-Khaleej. The 32-year-old centre-back has also had stints with French clubs Monaco, Lens and Toulouse, German outfits Ingolstadt and Wolfsburg, and Turkish club Fenerbache. Born in France but able to represent Congo through his mother's heritage, Tisserand made the most recent of his 35 senior appearances for the African nation in June 2022. Meanwhile, 37-year-old Da Silva is returning to the A-League after leaving the Victory at the end of the 2023-24 season to join French second division club Clermont Da Silva made 42 appearances in his season-and-a-half stint with the Melbourne club, and twice won the Victory's player-of-the-year award. Storm skipper Harry Grant snatches golden point thriller over Penrith

Harry Houdini! Storm skipper Harry Grant came up with a moment for the ages to seal a 22-18 win in golden point over the Panthers, ending the premiers' nine-game winning streak. With the game on the line, all of the Panthers' eyes were on the Storm's likely field goal kickers, Cameron Munster and Jonah Pezet. Grant spotted that and took his opportunity, with the star No. 9 making a darting run for the try-line and scoring the matchwinner under the posts. It capped a thrilling grand final rematch that had just about everything. It all started with a red-hot first half from the Panthers, who went into the break with a 12-4 lead — and a 100 per cent completion rate. Isaiah Papali'i opened the scoring after burrowing over from dummy-half before Xavier Coates responded to level the scores at 4-all. However there'll be plenty made of Coates' try after replays showed he knocked on into Dylan Edwards then regathered before grounding the ball. Penrith snatched the lead when Nathan Cleary backed himself and scored. But the Storm came out firing in the second half with Coates coming up with a magical five minutes. The Melbourne winger collected a loose ball and ran 65 metres to score a stunning try before leaping over Brian To'o minutes later to bat the ball back for Joe Chan to score. Those two big moments helped the Storm snatch the lead, until Scott Sorensen scored a crucial try to get the Panthers ahead again. And true to form, the Storm hit back five minutes later through Marion Seve — who was rocking protective goggles due to an eye injury he's returned from in recent weeks. As the clock wound down, the Panthers got themselves in prime field position and Cleary took a shot at field goal only for Moses Leota to be penalised for blocking. Munster attempted a field goal in the final 90 seconds, which fell short, while Cleary attempted two more — one of which was charged down by an epic Trent Loiero effort, sending the game to golden point. Grant then proved the Storm hero in one of the best games of the season.

German International School Sydney opens soccer academy with Borussia Dortmund

The German International School Sydney is part of the soccer academy program of Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. The official opening earlier this week was attended not only by students and parents, but also by official guests: the German Consul General in Sydney, Felix Schwarz, the managing director of the BVB Academy, Christian Diercks, Champions League winner with Dortmund and club ambassador Paul Lambert and Sydney FC head of player management Alexander Baumjohann alongside the club's young talent Joe Lacey. GISS principal Michael Cordes explained that the Football Academy is not just about sporting performance, but also about values such as team spirit, respect and stamina, which would help children develop off the court. Consul General Schwarz emphasized the importance of cooperation for the German-speaking community in Sydney. In addition to the importance of cooperation for the German-speaking community, the panel also focused on personal role models, what it means to combine competitive sport and school, and advice for interested children. Credit: SBS German Academy managing director Christian Diercks underlined that the BVB soccer school is not primarily focused on finding talent. Instead, the aim is to enable children — even those who do not have the opportunity to access a junior development center — to develop in soccer and on a personal level. The focus is on having fun moving, especially for the youngest. We want to build the best possible sports ecosystem that supports children and young people in the long term — regardless of whether they become professionals or not Christian Diercks (Managing Director BVB Football Academy) The cooperation with GISS is primarily motivated by a 'shared mindset.' In addition to sports education, BVB also wants to impart soccer culture and promote cultural exchange. In future, an UEFA-licensed coach will manage the program and help children improve their skills. In the near future the cooperation with BVB should not only enrich the school, but also the surrounding community and also involve children outside of the school. Credit: SBS German The official part was followed by a symbolic celebration: a harbor cruise on a ship decorated in black and yellow with a view of the Sydney Opera and the Harbour Bridge. Parents, students and guests took the opportunity to share their joy and expectations for the new academy. It will be interesting to see whether one day a GISS schoolchild will actually make it onto the big stage in the soccer world at some point.
