John McArdle-trained My Gladiola primed for Caulfield return in 2025 Quezette Stakes

Mornington trainer John McArdle would love a breeding school of thought to apply to My Gladiola in a campaign that will start in Saturday's Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield. Breeding scholars have long believed the stock of champion stallion I Am Invincible improved significantly from their two-year-old to three-year-old seasons. 'Hopefully they're right,' McArdle said. McArdle's daughter of I Am Invincible, My Gladiola, showed abundant talent in her two-year-old season, winning a Group 3 race on debut and running second in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude at her second start. My Gladiola was spelled after a tough run in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield. McArdle said My Gladiola put on weight during her time off, requiring the grey to have three jumpouts leading up to her return to racing at Caulfield. 'She's had three jumpouts and been in work for a long time but she did go to the paddock straight after the Blue Diamond and she had a couple of months off,' McArdle said. 'She did get a bit heavy so we just brought her back into work and pottered around with her. 'She was a powerful enough girl as it was but she's certainly got bigger and stronger so hopefully that equates to improved performance.' My Gladiola's pedigree indicated she was a sprinting type but McArdle said he would cover all bases with his spring entries for the smart prospect. "This has been a smart effort." Well-bred filly My Gladiola (I Am Invincible x Villa Verde) impresses on debut at Sandown ðŸ'¥ @RedgumRacing @jamieleemott â€' (@Racing) January 25, 2025 'Going by all the data and everything, she's still got a bit of improvement in her but she's got a bit of a spring ahead of her,' McArdle said. 'Initially, I think she's similar (to her dam), a 1000 to 1200(m) horse but we'll let her tell us. Thousand Guineas but she'll also look towards the Coolmore (Stud Stakes). 'There's a lot of options for three-year-old fillies in the spring.'

2025 Quezette Stakes: My Gladiola primed for spring

My Gladiola is slated to tune up for the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) next month at Caulfield with a course proper jumpout on Wednesday. The rising three-year-old Group 2-placed gunmetal filly, trained by John McArdle, is entered for an 800m hitout under jockey Jamie Mott. My Gladiola won the Group 3 Blue Diamond Fillies' Preview (1000m) on debut last summer and placed second in the Group 2 Prelude. The sharp daughter of I Am Invincible finished midfield in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) – beaten four lengths – after being held up at the 300m. My Gladiola has placed second in two recent jump-outs at Sandown and Mornington respectively. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'There's been a bit of form come out of them … she'll jumpout again at Caulfield on Wednesday and then go to the Quezette first-up.' The Quezette is likely to attract a hot field on August 16 at Caulfield, including Ciaron Maher-trained unbeaten filly Signature Scent. 'Everyone is going there but a filly like her we have to run her in these races,' McArdle said. 'She's a Group 3 winner and Group 2 placed … she seems to have come back well. 'She's bigger, she's stronger and she's more relaxed in her work … Jamie Mott has been on her a few times and he's very happy with her.' • Blackbookers: Horses to follow during the depths of winter McArdle has the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day earmarked as the ultimate goal for My Gladiola. 'I don't think she'll get the mile (Thousand Guineas) … she'll be nominated,' McArdle said. 'She'll look towards the Coolmore, if she stands up.' The course-proper jump-outs fields on Wednesday include Group 1 winners Magic Time, Attrition, Mornington Glory, Pinstriped, Stretan Angel, Desert Lightning, La Dorada and Smokin' Romans. Melbourne Cup-qualified stayers Basillina and Deakin will also stretch their legs at Caulfield. Other spring candidates include set for lung burners include Mark Walker-trained New Zealand imports Damask Rose and Return To Conquer. Balerno-born and raised John McArdle and his partner, Gillian Wilkinson, are behind the move and the journey from acquisition to opening has been a trip down memory lane for the businessman. His late father Jack was a well-known regular and John followed in dad's footsteps, popping in for a refreshment in his youth and later life. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad John admits he bought the pub because of his strong local connections and the project to restore one of the last Victorian public bars remaining in and around the Capital has involved months of planning. The Grey Horse, pictured just before the scaffolding came down Designers, builders and trades all with extensive experience in the hospitality industry have been engaged. The transformation has included a major clear-out, filling countless skips, months of issues with drainage, repaired stone masonry, a new roof, electrics, plumbing and heating. Now, with the scaffolding now down, there is great anticipation and enthusiasm in the area to see the doors open. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Amy Buchanan, formerly of the Colinton Inn, will be at the helm. John and Amy grew up together in Balerno and as her father Jimmy drank in the pub with John's dad back in the day, there is a feeling of coming home on both sides. Initially, the Grey Horse, or Brow's as it is known locally, will concentrate on the bar trade, with at least four cask ales at the centre of the offering, including two constant beers. Food will be kept simple, charcuterie, cheese boards and snacks to accompany the beers and wines. There has also been a interest from renowned Edinburgh chefs in staging pop-up events. McArdle said: "The journey has taken a bit longer than hoped with a few obstacles in the way, but we are really looking forward to opening the doors again soon." x9mb6g2

In pictures: Six-bedroom country lodge amid enchanting woodland in Co Wicklow for €1.995m

Address : Ballyteige Lodge, Ballyteige, Tinahely, Arklow, Co Wicklow Price : €1,995,000 Agent : Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes View this property on Renowned surgeon John McArdle built Ballyteige Lodge in 1890 as his shooting lodge, a country retreat from his home in Merrion Square in Dublin . An avowed nationalist, McArdle would host such political figures as John Redmond and Charles Stewart Parnell at the lodge – one can only imagine what conversations must have taken place during those hunting parties. The good news for prospective buyers of Ballyteige Lodge is that they'll still have shooting rights on a half-acre area on Ballyteige Mountain just behind the lodge. They'll also have fishing rights on the scenic Ow river which runs through the magnificent grounds. There's more good news with the knowledge that Ballyteige Lodge has been beautifully maintained by McArdle's descendant Seán McArdle, retaining its charming period features and tastefully incorporating contemporary touches. Situated on the Wicklow Way, the lodge is a well-known visitor attraction in the area, offering accommodation and fine dining, and its sylvan setting by the river makes it popular for weddings and other events, including craft and horticulture workshops and guided tours of the gardens and grounds. A suspension bridge over the river leads into a lush forest path and on to a spectacular waterfall, providing excellent wedding photo opportunities. The property will be sold freehold, with vacant possession given at the close of the sale, but the tourism income opportunities of this fine, elegant portal to a different age are apparent. READ MORE Ballyteige Lodge Porch Hall Drawingroom Drawingroom Sittingroom Ballyteige Lodge Ballyteige Lodge is on an elevated site surrounded by gorgeously landscaped gardens and enchanting grounds, which include a tennis lawn, mature orchard, flower gardens, a Japanese water garden, two swimming areas and restored stables which are used for private events and celebrations. The flower gardens are testimony to more than a century of expert horticultural design, with vibrant herbaceous borders and a rose garden surrounded by mature beech hedging. The tennis lawn is sheltered by ancient trees, and there's a circular outdoor swimming pool in a natural forest setting, and a wild but safe swimming area in the river. As you walk through the mature woodlands, you'll spot sequoias, Irish oak, beech, copper beech, monkey puzzle trees, Scots pine and Irish champion Lawson cypress. Inside, the lodge has high ceilings, original timber floors and large sash windows, with an elegant drawingroom, cosy sittingroom, grand diningroom, sun-drenched conservatory and a kitchen designed for entertaining. The kitchen contains bespoke cabinetry, an Aga and a large central island, and is adjoined by generous pantry and utility room, plus an additional workshop area to the rear. The drawingroom has intricate cornicing and a large cast-iron period fireplace, while the diningroom is big enough to host a banquet. Off the sittingroom, the gorgeous conservatory opens out to an ornate Victorian pergola bedecked in seasonal plants and blooms. It's the ideal space for dining almost al fresco, with views of the gardens sweeping away to the mountains and forests. A wide staircase leads to six well-proportioned bedrooms upstairs, including four large doubles with dual aspect, high ceilings and original working fireplaces, and three bathrooms, two of which are fitted with original free-standing Victorian baths. The wide upstairs landing leads to a balcony to the front of the house which gives panoramic views over the gardens and the scenic Wicklow countryside beyond. Kitchen Diningroom Conservatory Waterfall Suspension bridge over Ow river Ow river The entire area around Ballyteige Lodge is woodland and is ideal for lovers of the outdoors with abundant walking and cycling trails, forests, lakes and mountains to explore, and a range of biodiversity to observe. There are also pubs, restaurants and other amenities in surrounding villages including Tinahely, Aughrim, Rathdrum and Laragh, and golf courses at Woodenbridge and Macreddin. There is access to primary and secondary schools in the area, and it's just an hour in to Dublin city centre and just over an hour to Dublin Airport. Back at the turn of the 20th century, Ballyteige Lodge would have been considered akin to what we call a 'smart house' today; it had its own hydroelectric system supplying it all the newfangled electricity it needed. Such a hydroelectric system would be viable today, according to a number of surveys, and could be supported by renewable energy grants. There is also scope to convert the large attic space to create two more bedrooms or a home office; and there's a former gardener's house, the Old Bothy, which could easily be renovated – both projects would be subject to planning permission. Ballyteige Lodge measures 422.6sq m (4,549sq ft) and has an E1 Ber. It is for sale through Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes seeking €1.995 million.
