Footy star Changkuoth Jiath reveals he would have either died or became a child soldier if it wasn't for his parents
Before he was born, the footy star's mum and dad fled South Sudan on foot as a violent civil war erupted around them.
They walked frantically for a week in search of safety and a better future, with no idea of where they would end up.
Jiath, known as 'CJ', was born in an Ethiopian refugee camp and would go on to spend his next six years there, waiting to be accepted by a country.
They eventually resettled in Australia in 2011, with the family moving to Dandenong on Melbourne's eastern outskirts among a sizeable South Sudanese community.
'This world that is happening in Sudan is so different to Ethiopia, but then also, the refugee camp in Ethiopia is so different to Australia. It's three different worlds,' Jiath said on Channel 7's Unfiltered.
'It's not always guaranteed that you're going to live if you flee Sudan, because most of the time, you don't know where you're going.
'You're trying to find somewhere to survive and get away from what's happening there.
'It's definitely not always a guarantee you'll live.'
Jiath says he owes his parents everything for making the decision to leave.
'If my parents stayed in Sudan, I wouldn't be here today. It's either you become a soldier, or you die, that's it,' he said.
'To have the Australian Government grant us as refugees was a special day for us.'
'... I want to celebrate how fortunate I have it here in Australia and how fortunate we are as a family.'
Sport became a big part of the youngsters life and he soon found himself kicking around a Sherrin on the playground.
'It was so much fun,' said Jiath.
'Obviously looking at the ball it was the weirdest shape ever. Like nothing I've ever seen in my life.
'...from when I first played footy, I just fell in love with it.'
The young gun later played for the Morewell Tigers, Gippsland Power and later Xavier College.
The Hawks signed him in 2018 as a Category B Rookie and the rest is history.
Jiath says the biggest turning point of his footy career was in 2020 when new coach Sam Mitchell pulled him aside and asked him why he wasn't playing 'consistent AFL footy'.
'That was the turning point of my career,' Jiath said.
'I went away from that conversation, (took) a hard look at myself, and really tried to understand how come I'm not.

However, after a five-week absence, the hooker returned to start from the bench during Sunday's two-point victory against the Titans. He took to the field for 51 minutes, made 111 metres from 11 runs and also made a whopping 20 tackles. Smith joined the Roosters back in 2023, after the footy star had spent six years playing for the Storm, winning a premiership with Melbourne in 2020.

Fast bowler Scott Boland says Australia will ignore any on-field aggression brought down under by England this summer, 100 days from the first Ashes Test in a tour that looks set to break records. England and India completed a thrilling drawn series last week across five Tests marked by tension between the two sides, prompting Indian captain Shubman Gill at one point to describe the hosts' behaviour as not 'what I would think comes in the spirit of the game'. Footy WAG claims she had to move on from her job because of her social media posts
The girlfriend of an AFL player has claimed she felt she had to leave her job because her employer didn't like her rising social media profile. Paris Tier, the partner of Greater Western Sydney Giants player Conor Stone, revealed on her podcast WAG: Women and Goals that she changed jobs because of her TikTok posts. She was working in sales merchandising at a time when she wasn't creating much noise online because she had few followers. But her relationship with Stone changed that and her posts quickly gained traction. Tier's social media content – which had nothing to do with her employment – started attracting 30,000 views or more. And that's when she believes things changed at work. 'I got a call from a colleague and she said, "Our boss has called me saying you can't work tomorrow because somebody has complained about your TikTok",' Tier told News Corp. Tier was told the complaint was not made to the company that employed her directly, but the one that she was contracted to as part of her role. Tier (pictured with Stone) said she moved on from her previous job despite confronting the HR department to make sure her social media posts were okay The post that attracted the complaint was about an NRL player. Tier later deleted the video. She asked the company's HR and media departments whether her social media presence was an issue. 'I was a little bit disappointed because when I messaged [my boss] about it, she said it was nothing,' Tier said. She consulted an employment lawyer while she was on two weeks' leave after she was told she 'wasn't the right fit for the role'. Tier said she quit the role just before she was sent a letter of termination, and claimed she still has no idea where the complaint came from or if it was even real. The footy WAG is now happily working in a new industry, but believes employment contracts should highlight potential issues regarding employees' social media use. She also hit out at assumptions that WAGs are often unemployed stay-at-home mums who don't 'have half a brain cell'. 'People have assumptions because we don't post our work, but how can people post their work when individuals do something like this?' she said. 'It's not fair.' Tier revealed in July that she moved in with Stone earlier this year and said they were 'putting together a rental prenup'. Tier's contract with the 23-year-old wasn't just about protecting property – it was also about preserving their romance. 'If you're living together for two months and your boyfriend starts farting, that's going to de-romanticise the relationship a lot, which is something I don't really want to happen,' Tier explained. 'So I would write in the prenup, "I don't want you to fart in front of me".' Tier has also hit out at the hate players' partners get online, revealing she had received comments like 'I thought WAGs were supposed to be skinny'. 'I actually made a video and before I posted it, I was like, "Oh, I actually feel fat in this",' she said. 'Within minutes of it being up, I got like five comments… people calling me fat and saying I don't fit, I guess, the WAG criteria.'
