Pakistan says nationwide crackdown against sugar hoarders, profiteers underway

Arab News5 days ago
KARACHI: Pakistan's Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain announced on Wednesday that a nationwide crackdown against those attempting to disrupt the sugar supply in the country through hoarding and profiteering was underway, amid Islamabad's attempts to stabilize the commodity's price.
Market analysts have said retail sugar prices in several parts of the country have risen sharply since January, surging to Rs200 [$0.70] per kilogram. In Pakistan, high sugar prices have triggered public outcry and become flashpoints for opposition criticism in the past, with allegations of hoarding and cartelization frequently surfacing in election years or periods of economic volatility.
Hussain chaired a meeting with representatives of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) and other key stakeholders from all provinces on Wednesday, the national food security ministry said in a press release. It said the meeting aimed to review the current sugar market situation, pricing trends, and supply chain dynamics.
'During the meeting, the Federal Minister expressed serious concern over the artificial hike in sugar prices and warned of strict action against all those who are involved in hoarding and market manipulation,' the statement said.
'He announced that a nationwide crackdown is currently underway against those disrupting the sugar supply chain.'
Hussain noted that due to the government's 'decisive actions,' sugar prices have started to decline significantly from Rs200 per kg to Rs. 175–180 [$0.61-0.63] per kg in various markets.
The minister warned sugar mills that were not releasing their existing stocks that the government would not tolerate hoarding, directing all provincial governments to ensure the timely lifting of sugar from mills and facilitate its smooth transportation to markets.
Hussain noted the 'exploitative role' of certain middlemen and market intermediaries, saying they were capitalizing on the market's volatility.
'The federal and provincial authorities are now actively pursuing legal and administrative actions against such elements to curb unjust profiteering,' the ministry said.
The minister later chaired a high-level meeting of the Steering Committee on Sugar Imports, where all technical, procedural, and operational challenges related to sugar importation were reviewed and resolved, the food security ministry said.
Earlier this month, Pakistan announced it would import sugar in two phases. In the first phase, a tender for 200,000 metric tons of sugar would be issued, followed by another tender for 150,000 metric tons after one week, the ministry said.
The ministry also announced it had decided to waive all duties and taxes on sugar imports to ensure the product is available at affordable prices.

Finmin highlights Pakistan's IT, mineral and agriculture potential for collaboration with US

KARACHI: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Monday met with US Chargé d'Affaires Elizabeth Horst and discussed with her the potential of Pakistan's information technology (IT), minerals and agriculture sectors for collaboration with the United States, the Pakistani finance ministry said. The meeting served as an opportunity to exchange views on matters of mutual interest and to reaffirm the positive trajectory of bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United States. Aurangzeb appreciated the continued US support for Pakistan's development and macroeconomic stability achieved over the past year and a half, according to the Pakistani finance ministry. 'Aurangzeb underscored the importance of the US as Pakistan's largest trading partner and highlighted Pakistan's keen interest in broadening bilateral cooperation beyond traditional sectors,' his ministry said. 'He specifically pointed to the promising potential in information technology, minerals and agriculture as avenues for mutually beneficial collaboration.' The US is Pakistan's top export destination, with shipments totaling $5.44 billion in fiscal year 2023-2024, according to official data. From July 2024 to February 2025, exports rose 10 percent from a year earlier. Both countries have been engaged in talks after Washington announced a 29 percent 'reciprocal tariff' on Pakistani exports in April. Islamabad said the move, paused in June for a 90-day period, may undercut its fragile, export-led recovery. Recalling his visit to the US this month, Aurangzeb shared insights from his productive meetings with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer in Washington, noting 'encouraging progress' in deepening trade and economic ties between the two countries. He also briefed Horst on Pakistan's recent macroeconomic indicators, including sovereign rating upgrades and renewed investor confidence, according to the Pakistani finance ministry. The US chargé d'affaires appreciated the economic progress and the government's reform-driven approach, emphasizing the US commitment to strengthening economic and trade ties with Pakistan. 'She reiterated US support for continued economic and political stability in Pakistan, and expressed optimism for an enduring and robust business partnership between the two nations,' the Pakistani ministry said. 'The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to building on the momentum of current engagements to further deepen bilateral cooperation.'

Pakistan projects July inflation at 3.5-4.5% as price pressures ease

KARACHI: Pakistan's finance ministry on Monday projected consumer inflation for July to remain in a 3.5-4.5% range, citing stable prices and improved supply conditions, as price pressures ease further after the previous fiscal year's sharp decline. Inflation stood at 3.2% in June, the ministry said in its monthly economic report, while average inflation for the fiscal year ending June 30 dropped to 4.49%, a nine-year low, from 23.4% the year before. Pakistan's fiscal year begins on July 1. The ministry said the economy is expected to sustain its recovery in the early months of fiscal year 2026, underpinned by an improved macroeconomic backdrop and growing investor confidence. Large-scale manufacturing likely maintained momentum in June, supported by rising private sector credit offtake and expanding production activity, the report said. The rebound is expected to lift imports of raw materials and intermediate goods, while aiding value-added exports, it added. Strengthening domestic demand, a stable exchange rate, and steady global commodity prices were also likely to boost exports, remittances and imports in July, reinforcing external sector stability, the ministry said. However, it warned that recent heavy rains could pose risks to agricultural output and supply chains, potentially impacting the inflation outlook in the coming months. Since June 26, rain- and flood-related incidents have killed at least 266 people and injured more than 630 nationwide, according to the National Disaster Management Authority, adding that 1,557 houses had been destroyed.

India says its troops killed 3 suspected militants in Kashmir fighting

Indian troops killed three suspected terrorists in a gunfight in a forested area in disputed Kashmir, officials said Monday. The Indian military said in a statement on social media that three terrorists were killed in an intense firefight in the forested area in Dachigam area some 30 kilometers (19 miles) northeast of the regions main city of Srinagar. Police Inspector-General Vidhi Kumar Birdi told reporters that the joint operation by the military, paramilitary, and police was still ongoing. Officials did not give any other details. The Associated Press could not independently verify the details. Nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan each administer part of Himalayan Kashmir but both claim the territory in its entirety. Terrorists in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir have been fighting New Delhi's rule since 1989. Many Muslim Kashmiris support the terrorists' goal of uniting the territory either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country. Tens of thousands of civilians, terrorists, and government forces have been killed in the conflict. Monday's incident is the second major gunfight since a gun massacre in the region in April that killed 26 people, mostly Hindu tourists, in Indian-controlled Kashmir. That led to tit-for-tat military strikes by India and Pakistan that brought the nuclear-armed rivals to the brink of their third war over the region. The Indian army also said in May that its soldiers killed three suspected terrorists in a gunfight. Before the April gun massacre in the Kashmiri resort town of Pahalgam, the fighting had largely ebbed in the regions Kashmir Valley, the heartland of anti-India rebellion, and mainly shifted to mountainous areas of Jammu in the last few years. The massacre increased tensions between India and Pakistan leading to the worst military confrontation in decades and the death of dozens of people until a ceasefire was reached on May 10 after US mediation. The region has simmered in anger since New Delhi ended the regions semi-autonomy in 2019 and drastically curbed dissent, civil liberties, and media freedoms while intensifying counterinsurgency operations.
