‘Dog Man' Stays No. 1 With $13.7 Million at Super Bowl Box Office
Universal/DreamWorks' 'Dog Man' will easily hold on to the No. 1 spot on Super Bowl weekend, a good result for Universal as another one of its films, 87North's 'Love Hurts,' is facing an uphill battle to turn a profit against its $18 million budget, as is Sony/Spyglass' 'Heart Eyes.'
'Dog Man' will take No. 1 with $13.7 million, a stiff 62% drop from its $36 million opening. With a 10-day total of approximately $54 million, it will still be a theatrically profitable release, though it faces tough competition next weekend for family attention with 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'Paddington in Peru' on the way.
'Heart Eyes' is in second with $8.5 million from 3,102 theaters against an $18 million budget. In a theatrical market loaded with horror films like 'Nosferatu' and last week's New Line release 'Companion,' the Screen Gems slasher is hoping to leg out as a Valentine's Day-themed offering for couples looking for a horror date night film.
Word-of-mouth has been generally positive, earning a B- on CinemaScore along with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 84% critics and 79% audience.
The outlook is much less rosy for the action film 'Love Hurts,' which has opened to $6 million from 3,055 theaters. Critics have panned Ke Huy Quan's leading role debut with a 16% Rotten Tomatoes score while audiences are mixed with a C+ on CinemaScore and a 68% RT audience score.
With an $18 million budget before a marketing campaign that included TV spots during NFL broadcasts to promote Quan's co-star Marshawn Lynch, Universal isn't facing a significant loss. But 'Love Hurts' is looking like it will join 'Wolf Man' as the second Universal release in the past month that will have to rely on premium on-demand and other post-theatrical revenue to break even.

Despite his string of hit roles in everything from Good Will Hunting and The Bourne Identity to, most recently, Oppenheimer, not everything Matt Damon stars in is as successful. However, one of his biggest bombs is finding a new life after becoming a smash hit on Netflix. Released in 2017, Downsizing wasn't well received. It has just 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and was a box office bomb after its $55 million earnings failed to match its budget. However,in the UK, it was added to Netflix on Thursday, May 22, and it's been steadily climbing Netflix's rankings and gaining viewers. At the time of writing two weeks later, it's the streamer's most-watched movie. Living in the US? Downsizing is free via Hoopla and Kanopy but is only available to buy or rent digitally beyond those options. Downsizing is part romance, part comedy and part sci-fi story. It's set in a world in which humans invent 'downsizing', a process by which people are irreversibly shrunk to about five inches, which makes them more space efficient thereby solving overpopulation and the climate crisis. Damon plays Paul, who decides to go through the process with his wife Aubrey (Kristin Wiig)... until she pulls out at the last minute and leaves him. Stuck in his small form, and seeing his life fall apart, Paul goes on a voyage through the small 'Leisureland' in order to find himself and redefine his life. Critics of 2017 criticized Downsizing for being a bit muddled in its focus, though it's worth pointing out that certain reviewers really loved it. As someone who watched the movie in cinemas back then, it's safe to say that the movie was mis-marketed in a way that hurt it: posters and adverts made it look like a standard American comedy, but it's anything but. In a way, Downsizing is an exploration of the climate crisis and humanity's longevity, dealing with themes of class struggles and impending extinction events. It can get dark and melancholy at times, which isn't what audiences would really expect from a Matt Damon rom-com. That's likely why Downsizing was received so poorly eight years ago. It's not a bad film, but if you're expecting a lighthearted comedy, you're going to be disappointed. The movie was directed by Alexander Payne, also known for The Descendants and The Holdovers, and if you've seen those fantastic movies, you'll have your expectations better aligned for Downsizing. Downsizing climbing up Netflix's rankings makes sense: people have probably forgotten any expectations created by marketing 8 years ago, the streamer's thumbnails make it seem more of a sci-fi story than a comedy, and its genre tags are "cerebral" and "imaginative" which better fits the movie. The movie isn't actually the only pre-Covid Hollywood flop on the top-10 movies list and if you want something more action-packed, the Taron Edgerton and Jamie Foxx Robin Hood from 2018 is at #4 after being added on Sunday, June 1. Rounding out the list is Netflix Original A Widow's Game at #2, Channel 4 doc Accused: The Hampstead Paedophile Hoax at #3, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning at #5, stalwart The Super Mario Bros. Movie at #6, another Netflix movie The Heart Knows at #7, The Cat in the Hat at #8, Netflix doc A Deadly American Marriage at #9 and yet another kids movie Minions at #10.

George Clooney Previews Saturday's Live Telecast Of ‘Good Night, And Good Luck' on CNN: 'Some Networks Aren't Really Up For Doing This Right Now'
Decades before CNN agreed to a live telecast of Broadway's Good Night, and Good Luck on June 7, George Clooney had originally envisioned it as a special for CBS, not a movie for theaters and a play on Broadway. 'But then there was that mishap with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl,' recalls Clooney to Deadline. 'And suddenly I got a call from the head of CBS saying, 'we're out of the live TV business.' So we wrote it as a movie.' For the penultimate performance of Good Night, and Good Luck — which opened in April and has since become the highest-grossing production in the history of the Shubert Organization — Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre will be equipped with 21 cameras for the live broadcast that's set to kick off at 7 p.m. ET Saturday on CNN and CNN International. It will also stream live on and via CNN's apps on connected TVs and mobile devices, without requiring a cable login, as well as on Max across all subscription plans. 'This is just the natural gestation,' says Clooney of Good Night, and Good Luck's trajectory from a 2005 film to a first-ever live telecast of a Broadway play. 'Obviously some of the networks aren't really up for the idea of doing this right now. I think they're all a little shellshocked from tariff talk and lawsuits and everything else.' That's where Warner Bros Discovery came in. In early May, Clooney called CEO David Zaslav about finding the right platform for the play that recently received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for Clooney. 'I have a little bit of a history with doing live television,' says Clooney. 'I talked NBC into doing ER as a live show, and then I did a live movie called Fail Safe for CBS. Saturday is a good night for us because it's our last evening performance. Our run is over so it's not costing the play anything anymore. Why don't we open it up and show people how fun it is to come to New York to see a play?' CNN anchors Anderson Cooper and Pamela Brown will lead special live coverage that begins at 6:30 pm ET outside of the Winter Garden Theatre. Immediately following the broadcast, Cooper will host an exclusive special to discuss the production and state of global journalism. Den of Thieves is producing the live show. Executive producers are Clooney, Grant Heslov, Deena Katz, Jeff Skoll and Todd Wagner, as well as Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski. The plan isn't to infringe on the audience who bought tickets a long time ago, insists Clooney. Cameras with long lenses will be perched in the back of the house while others will be hidden in speakers and TV monitors so viewers can get up close and personal shots of the action. 'We're not re-blocking the play,' says Clooney of the drama that he co-wrote with Heslov, who will serve as co-director of the telecast with Micah Bickham. 'We made this play from a movie. We don't need to do another movie. We're not doing that kind of coverage. It's still a play and we want people to see the audience and we want people to see big wider shots, to see how sets are changing and then to get in closer. So it's a bit of everything. We want it to feel like a very unique theater experience.' The only instructions for the theater audience that night will be to get their butts in the seats before curtain. 'It's going to get a little ugly if you come walking in once the show starts. There are no commercial breaks or anything,' says Clooney. 'It's a funny thing that happens in a live show. I remember the Obamas were here the other day and everybody was so excited. The play was four minutes shorter than it normally is. So I expect having done live television before with ER and with Fail Safe, I expect the show will pick up a little pace. But we'll get into a groove.' If there's one message that Clooney hopes to get across to viewers, it's the importance of a free press and speaking truth to power — one of the key tenets of the Clooney Foundation for Justice that the actor has run with his wife, Amal, since 2016. 'Murrow was taking on McCarthy at a time when people were afraid. And you could see fear permeating in the law firms and in the networks and in the universities,' says Clooney. 'It's a good thing to remind ourselves that we've been afraid before and we survive these things and we will get through it. The most important thing you can do is to constantly challenge people in power. You have to or they win.' Good Night, and Good Luck closes its theatrical run with a matinee performance on Sunday, June 8. There is talk about taking the show to London — which Clooney addressed recently on Late Night with Seth Meyers — but it doesn't sound like the actor plans to keep his hair tinted black for a new run across the pond. 'We have a home there and it might be fun to do something in London, but I think there should be someone else involved in it first and then maybe I could come in for a while afterwards,' he tells Deadline. 'It's fun to see other people take a turn with it to see what they do with it.' Until then, he's sorry to say goodbye to Broadway but is looking forward to putting his feet up and getting back to normal. 'I feel very lucky to be part of the person giving that message out, and I will miss that terribly,' he says. 'But I'm ready to grow some gray hair out, that's for sure.'
