David Leitch Is Going Into Battle Directing ‘Gears of War'

The 'John Wick' filmmaker has signed on to helm the movie based on the hit Xbox video game franchise. Netflix's long-anticipated film adaptation of Xbox's premier video game franchise, Gears of War, is finally gathering some momentum. Filmmaker David Leitch (The Fall Guy) has signed on to helm the blockbuster take on the Gears of War game series for Netflix. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that he and his production company 87North will be partnering up with the Coalition Studio, the video game's developers, for the movie. The script will be written by Dune scribe Jon Spaihts. The game is based in a universe where the planet Sera is close to total societal collapse and humanity faces a new monstrous threat: the Locust. The franchise follows the Delta Squad, a regiment under the command of Sergeant Marcus Fenix, who hopes to clear his name and the ragtag army by taking on the threat through gratuitous chainsaw-gunning. They're humanity's last line of defense against invasion. Netflix has had the rights to make the games into a franchise since 2022. Leitch's involvement begs the question if some of his frequent actor collaborators might take part in the action. The film follows Netflix's past video game adaptations which include Castlevania, Sonic Prime, and the upcoming Resident Evil and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Generate Key Takeaways Amazon MGM Studios announced the release date for How to Rob a Bank, a crime action thriller from director David Leitch starring Pete Davidson and Nicholas Hoult. When is the release date for How to Rob a Bank? Per Deadline, How to Rob a Bank scored a Labor Day weekend release and will hit theaters on September 4, 2026. How to Rob a Bank stars Davidson, Hoult, and Emmy winner Anna Sawai as bank robbers who share their heists on social media while eluding the police. Leitch will direct from a screenplay by executive producer Mark Bianculli. Leitch and his wife, Kelly McCormick, will produce through their 87 North banner alongside Imagine Entertainment. Additional producers include Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum. How to Rob a Bank is Leitch's first movie since 2024's The Fall Guy, an action comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. The Fall Guy focused on a stuntman (Gosling) who must find the missing lead actor (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) of a major Hollywood production being directed by his ex-girlfriend (Blunt). Despite its underperformance at the box office, The Fall Guy received mostly positive reviews and praise for its action sequences. Because of his experience as a stunt coordinator, How to Rob a Bank will likely include intricate and highly choreographed action sequences. These stunts have become staples in Leitch's previous movies, including Bullet Train, Hobbs & Shaw, Deadpool 2, and Atomic Blonde. Davidson recently appeared in Riff Raff, a crime comedy starring Jennifer Coolidge and Bill Murray, and Dog Man, an animated superhero comedy. Davidson recently wrapped production on another heist movie, The Pickup, starring Eddie Murphy. Hoult is coming off a strong 2024, with starring roles in The Garfield Movie, The Order, Juror #2, and Nosferatu. Hoult will play Lex Luthor this summer in James Gunn's Superman. ‘Dog Man' Stays No. 1 With $13.7 Million at Super Bowl Box Office

Universal/DreamWorks' 'Dog Man' will easily hold on to the No. 1 spot on Super Bowl weekend, a good result for Universal as another one of its films, 87North's 'Love Hurts,' is facing an uphill battle to turn a profit against its $18 million budget, as is Sony/Spyglass' 'Heart Eyes.' 'Dog Man' will take No. 1 with $13.7 million, a stiff 62% drop from its $36 million opening. With a 10-day total of approximately $54 million, it will still be a theatrically profitable release, though it faces tough competition next weekend for family attention with 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'Paddington in Peru' on the way. 'Heart Eyes' is in second with $8.5 million from 3,102 theaters against an $18 million budget. In a theatrical market loaded with horror films like 'Nosferatu' and last week's New Line release 'Companion,' the Screen Gems slasher is hoping to leg out as a Valentine's Day-themed offering for couples looking for a horror date night film. Word-of-mouth has been generally positive, earning a B- on CinemaScore along with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 84% critics and 79% audience. The outlook is much less rosy for the action film 'Love Hurts,' which has opened to $6 million from 3,055 theaters. Critics have panned Ke Huy Quan's leading role debut with a 16% Rotten Tomatoes score while audiences are mixed with a C+ on CinemaScore and a 68% RT audience score. With an $18 million budget before a marketing campaign that included TV spots during NFL broadcasts to promote Quan's co-star Marshawn Lynch, Universal isn't facing a significant loss. But 'Love Hurts' is looking like it will join 'Wolf Man' as the second Universal release in the past month that will have to rely on premium on-demand and other post-theatrical revenue to break even.
