Grok Vision unveiled: Elon Musk's AI ‘sees' the world through your camera

Economic Times23-04-2025

Billionaire Elon Musk's xAI has unveiled a new feature for its Grok chatbot that gives it the ability to 'see' the world in real-time using a smartphone's camera, much like Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT.
On Tuesday, xAI said that Grok Vision enables users to point their phone at everyday items—such as products, signs, or documents—and immediately ask questions about what they're seeing. The chatbot can then provide instant explanations and context.
Taking to X, Grok posted: 'I'm all ears (and eyes). Share your world with me.' Influencer and entrepreneur Mario Nawfal shared a video demonstrating its usage and wrote: 'Users can scan anything—products, signs, documents—and Grok will break it down with context and info on the spot.' Grok Vision launches alongside new features, including real-time search in voice mode and multilingual audio support.
Currently, the feature is available on iOS through the Grok app, while Android users will need to subscribe to the premium SuperGrok plan—costing $30 per month—to access the same tools, as reported by TechCrunch.
This comes shortly after xAI introduced a memory function for Grok, allowing the assistant to retain information from previous conversations with the chatbot to give a more personalised user experience.

"Doesn't Change..." How White House Reacted To Musk's Attack On Trump's Bill

Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. Elon Musk publicly criticised Trump's spending bill, calling it a "disgusting abomination" that would worsen the budget deficit. The White House dismissed his comments, stating they did not change the president's view of the bill. Elon Musk, the South African-born tech billionaire has had his first public disagreement with US president Donald Trump, since leaving the government abruptly last week. He hit Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' with "This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong," in one of his X posts. I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 3, 2025 However, the White House does not seem too worked up about his comments, as the press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Musk's stand does not change the president's opinion about it. "The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn't change the President's opinion. This is one big beautiful bill and he is sticking to it,' Leavitt told reporters. In another series of posts, he also added that the bill would "massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion" and that "Congress is making America bankrupt." This is not the first time Musk has spoken against the bill. "I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing," Musk, who recently stepped back from running the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), said. "I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful but I don't know if it can be both. My personal opinion," he added. Musk, who is close to the President but appears to remain at odds with him over the issue, made the remarks during an interview with CBS News. There has been a lot of criticism going around about the bill, with Republican fiscal hawks saying that the country is careening toward bankruptcy, and independent analysts warning it would increase the deficit by as much as $4 trillion over a decade. The White House Council of Economic Advisers has, however, made hugely ambitious projections, well outside the mainstream consensus, that the package will spur growth of up to 5.2 percent. Leavitt claimed the bill "does not add to the deficit," and would actually save $1.6 trillion through spending cuts. In a Friday press conference, Trump praised the legislation and called the bill "an unbelievable bill" that "cuts your deficits'. He also suggested that he would prefer "a bigger cut in taxes'. Musk who was present in the press conference, did not speak against the topic then. Per a Politico report, a Republican close to the White House said, 'When businessmen criticize legislation, journalists don't take them at their word, they look at how the legislation would impact their business interests. They should be doing that in this case.'

'Disgusting Abomination': Elon Musk Criticises Donald Trump's Tax Bill, White House Reacts

Last Updated: The tech billionaire's remarks come shortly after his abrupt exit from the administration last week. Elon Musk has sharply criticized President Donald Trump's flagship tax and spending legislation, calling it a 'disgusting abomination". Reacting to Musk's comments, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president remains unfazed and he already knew where 'Elon Musk stood on this bill". The controversial bill—passed by the House of Representatives in May—includes multi-trillion-dollar tax breaks, increased defence spending, and provisions that expand the federal government's borrowing capacity. 'Shame on those who voted for it," Musk posted on X on Tuesday. I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 3, 2025 The tech billionaire's remarks come shortly after his abrupt exit from the administration last week, following a 129-day stint leading a cost-cutting initiative through his advisory group, Doge. Musk doubled down on his criticism in a series of follow-up posts, warning that the bill would 'massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to USD 2.5 trillion" and claiming that 'Congress is making America bankrupt." Officially titled the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act," the legislation builds upon Trump's 2017 tax cuts while significantly boosting funding for the military and border security. However, it also proposes cuts to key social programs including Medicaid, food assistance, and other welfare schemes. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that the bill would add around USD 3.8 trillion to the federal government's current USD 36.2 trillion debt over the next ten years. Senate deliberations on the bill are ongoing, with Trump reportedly making direct calls to senators to secure backing for his landmark legislative effort. White House Dismisses Musk's Criticism The clash highlights ongoing tensions between Musk and the administration over fiscal policy, even as the bill continues to polarize opinion across political and economic circles. At a Friday press conference held in the Oval Office, President Trump hailed the legislation as 'an unbelievable bill" that 'cuts your deficits," while adding that he would have liked 'a bigger cut in taxes." Musk did not revisit his criticism of the bill during the event. First Published: June 04, 2025, 06:56 IST

Trump-led White House formally asks Congress to rescind $9.4 billion in approved spending

The White House on Tuesday officially sent its request to the Congress to claw back $9.4 billion in approved spending, which would take away funding from programs targeted by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The $9.4 billion package, known as 'recissions' on Capitol Hill, requires President Trump to take approval from the Congress in order to return the money which had been previously appropriated. And the move to cancel the funding via Congress route would also insulate the Trump administration from legal blockades. Trump aides have said the spending cuts are targeting programs which have liberal ideologies. If the said request passes from the House and Senate, it would formalise several spending cuts and freezes suggested by DOGE. NEW: Today, we sent the first rescissions package to Capitol Hill. This package contains BILLIONS in wasteful foreign aid and federal funding for NPR and PBS. Here's just some of the waste, fraud, and abuse identified: 🧵 — Office of Management and Budget (@WHOMB) June 3, 2025 The development comes when Elon Musk has officially exited DOGE and White House but heavily criticized Trump's tax cut and spending plan, calling it on Tuesday a 'disgusting abomination' for increasing the federal deficit. $1.1 billion for the left-wing Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which uses your taxpayer dollars to fund PBS and NPR. — Office of Management and Budget (@WHOMB) June 3, 2025 The White House spending cuts would target the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (funding cuts for NPR, PBS), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as well among others. Congress needs to clear the White House request in 45 days and it can through simple majority, meaning no Democratic support would be needed in both House and Senate. In a statement House Speaker Mike Johnson said, 'This rescissions package reflects many of DOGE's findings and is one of the many legislative tools Republicans are using to restore fiscal sanity. Congress will continue working closely with the White House to codify these recommendations,' CNN reported. Meanwhile, White House budget director Russ Vought said that more recissions package and spending cuts would follow the suit, if the current effort succeeds in the House. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called Vought 'a 'well-respected fiscal hawk,' and said that White House budget director has tools to produce more savings.
