KUCHING (July 9): The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) today launched its MD Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI) in Sarawak, marking its first rollout of the initiative in East Malaysia.
This strategic move aims to accelerate inclusive digital growth by equipping micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with innovative tools to boost productivity, streamline operations, and future-proof their businesses.
The event was officiated by State Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.
Introduced under the Madani Government, the BDI adopts a whole-of-nation approach to empower businesses across all states, including Sarawak, with the tools, expertise, and support needed to succeed in the fast-growing digital economy.
The initiative is delivered in collaboration with the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and the State Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment.
Deputy Minister of Digital, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, in his address, underscored the significance of the initiative in boosting Sarawak's economic resilience.
'The Ministry of Digital remains committed to supporting every corner of the nation in this digital journey. Sarawak's MSMEs play a vital role in driving regional economic growth.
'By embracing digitalisation and e-invoicing, they are positioning themselves for greater efficiency, transparency, and global competitiveness,' he said.
Wilson added that Sarawak's strength in renewable energy, coupled with its digital ambition, creates a unique platform for innovation.
'We are proud to work hand-in-hand with the state government to realise this vision as long-term partners.'
He also noted that with Sarawak's Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 in full swing, collaboration between the ministry, MDEC, and the state is expected to intensify in the coming months, for the benefit of MSMEs and the people of Sarawak.
MDEC Chief Executive Officer Anuar Fariz Fadzil highlighted the importance of federal-state cooperation to support local business growth.
'Sarawak is a vital part of Malaysia's digital future, and we are committed to supporting state-level transformation, fostering innovation, and creating long-term economic opportunities,' he said.
'This initiative is about building a future-ready business ecosystem and ensuring no MSME is left behind in the digital economy.'
The launch featured exhibitions, digital advisory sessions, and showcases from MDEC-accredited Digitalisation Partners to help MSMEs adopt solutions tailored to their needs.
Participating businesses gained access to digital advisory services, live product demos, and customised solutions from over 404 accredited partners.
A key feature of the initiative is the Digital Maturity Assessment (DMA) – a structured tool to help MSMEs evaluate their current digital capabilities and chart the next steps for transformation.
The event also spotlighted the National e-Invoicing Initiative, led by the Ministry of Digital and implemented by MDEC, to modernise how businesses issue and exchange invoices in real-time via the Peppol framework, enabling seamless interoperability between systems and compliance with LHDN tax regulations.
To ease e-invoicing adoption, MDEC introduced a suite of Freemium and Affordable Solutions from accredited providers, including Malaysia Digital (MD) status companies such as Xero and Big Ledger Sdn Bhd.
These tools are designed to offer MSMEs a smooth and cost-effective path toward digital compliance.
The BDI launch in Sarawak reaffirms MDEC's commitment to building inclusive, sustainable, and practical digital ecosystems that benefit local businesses and ensure Malaysia's digital economy remains robust and accessible to all.

People-centric initiatives boost MSME sector in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Recent government measures aimed at easing financial burdens on Malaysians are expected to provide significant relief to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcements include continued fuel subsidies for RON95 at RM1.99 per litre and a postponement of toll rate increases on 10 major highways. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick highlighted the direct benefits for MSMEs, particularly those reliant on transportation and logistics. 'Many businesses, especially in rural areas, depend on travel between urban and rural locations for sourcing materials and product deliveries. These measures will help reduce operational costs,' he said during an interview on Bernama Radio's Reaksi segment. Additional support comes in the form of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme, which provides a one-off RM100 cash aid to Malaysians aged 18 and above. The government has also increased funding for the MADANI Rahmah Sales initiative, aimed at stimulating domestic spending. Ewon encouraged Malaysians to take advantage of the newly announced public holiday on September 15, coinciding with Malaysia Day, by exploring local tourism. 'Support rural tourism and cooperative-run destinations. There is immense potential in our local economy waiting to be tapped,' he said. The ministry is actively promoting cooperative-based tourism, with events like the National Cooperative Day celebration in Melaka running from tomorrow until Sunday. - Bernama

India's leather, footwear exports to UK could exceed USD 900 mn as FTA opens new opportunities for small artisans

New Delhi [India], July 24 (ANI): India's leather and footwear exports to the UK could exceed USD 900 million, marking a major leap forward for the sector. This growth is expected as the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) opens up new opportunities for small artisans and businesses across the country. The FTA offers duty-free access to the UK's USD 23 billion market, giving Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) a strong advantage over other countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Pakistan in labour-intensive sectors such as leather and footwear, textiles and clothing, gems and jewellery, furniture, and sports goods. This is expected to unlock vast new opportunities for Indian exporters. The agreement is also likely to enhance the financial stability of small businesses, particularly for artisans, women entrepreneurs, and craftsmen. By providing them with access to a large market like the UK, the FTA enables these groups to support their families and communities while becoming key players in global value chains. The FTA includes provisions that encourage MSMEs to utilise digital tools, adopt e-commerce, and transition to more sustainable production methods. These changes will not only enhance efficiency but also enable Indian products to reach a broader international audience. With stronger intellectual property rights (IPR) and geographical indication (GI) protections included in the deal, MSMEs' unique and traditional products are expected to gain better recognition globally. This can increase the value of their goods in foreign markets. Increased export opportunities in labour-intensive industries, such as textiles, leather, and footwear, are expected to raise demand for skilled artisans in hubs like Tirupur and Kanpur. This, in turn, could create more jobs and boost local economies. As exports rise, private sector players in India are also expected to increase their production capacity. This is likely to lead to increased employment and improved income for individuals involved in these industries. India is now well-positioned to become one of the top three suppliers of textiles, leather, and footwear to the UK. SMEs across different states are expected to expand their production, hire more workers, and contribute to the development of their communities. In addition to leather and textiles, MSMEs in other sectors, such as marine products, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, electronics, engineering, oilseeds, alcoholic beverages, and soft commodities, are also expected to benefit from the FTA by increasing production and innovation.
