Lions plan to release Jalen Reeves-Maybin
Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Lions plan to release Reeves-Maybin heading into the new league year. The move will clear nearly $1.9 million in cap space for the 2025 season.
Reeves-Maybin was a Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro special teamer in 2023 and signed a two-year deal with the team around this time last year. He missed seven games with a neck injury in 2024 and finished the year with 14 tackles and a forced fumble.
A return to Detroit at some point would not be unprecedented. Reeves-Maybin, who is also the president of the NFL Players Association, played five seasons for the Lions before leaving for the Texans in 2022 and returning to his initial team the next year.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Charlie Morton gave up two hits and struck out five over six innings and the Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the first inning of a 7-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. Dillon Dingler hit a two-run single in the first, in which the Tigers batted around against Twins starter Pierson Ohl (0-3), who was making his fifth career start. An error by Minnesota second baseman Luke Keaschall led to four unearned runs. The was enough for 41-year-old right-hander Morton (8-10), who bounced back after a rough start against the Angels his last time out. Ohl, who faced Detroit earlier this month, lasted only 2 1/3 innings. Four of the seven total runs he surrendered were unearned. Dingler drove in his third run of the game with a double in the third. Javier Báez also drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers, who are leading the AL Central. Spencer Torkelson reached base three times and scored twice for Detroit. The start of Friday's game was delayed 26 minutes due to rain. Key stat Friday was Morton's second start of the year in which he did not allow a run. He also put up a zero in a five-inning start against Baltimore in June. Up next RHP Casey Mize (11-4, 3.50 ERA) starts the third game of the series for the Tigers and looks to win his third straight outing. The Twins counter with RHP Zebby Matthews (3-4, 5.11), who beat Detroit in his prior start against the Tigers this season. ___

Buffalo Bills, running back James Cook agree to 4-year, $48M extension
Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The Buffalo Bills agreed to a four-year, $48 million contract extension with James Cook, the Pro Bowl running back confirmed Wednesday on social media. The pact includes $30 million guaranteed, the most paid to a running back in the last five years. Cook, 25, was entering the final year of his rookie contract. The fourth-year running back totaled a career-high 1,567 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns over 17 games in 2023. He totaled 1,267 yards from scrimmage and scored 18 times, including a league-high and franchise record-tying 16 rushing touchdowns, over 16 starts in 2024. Cook was in full uniform and a full participant in practice Tuesday, ending a four-day hold-in. He also missed the Bills' first preseason game. The Bills will participate in a joint practice with the Chicago Bears on Friday in Chicago, and the Bears will host the Bills in their second preseason game at 8 p.m. EDT Sunday in Chicago. They will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their preseason finale Aug. 23 in Tampa, Fla. Cook and the Bills will host the Baltimore Ravens in their regular season opener Sept. 7 in Orchard Park, N.Y.

The Seattle Seahawks may have found their quarterback of the future this offseason, signing Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract in free agency. ESPN's Seth Walder clearly does not think all that highly of Darnold and is expecting the Seahawks to have a different player under center as soon as 2027. As a matter of fact, Walder is predicting Seattle to even make it all the way to the Super Bowl that season ... sans Darnold. But does Darnold have enough support around him to replicate his 2024 campaign? Or is he doomed to failure in the Pacific Northwest?
