Pakistan eyes $850mn annual revenue from Gwadar Port via fisheries, dates

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, on Friday said that with consistent investment, strategic policymaking, and improved infrastructure, Gwadar Port has the potential to generate over $850 million annually through value-added fisheries and date exports.
Chairing a high-level meeting on Gwadar Port operationalisation attended by officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and representatives from relevant ministries and organisations, including Gwadar Port Authority, Commerce, Industries, and Communication through Zoom, the minister laid out a comprehensive strategy to boost economic activities in Gwadar, read a statement.
Gwadar Port is a deep-sea port located in Gwadar, a coastal city in Balochistan. It holds strategic and economic significance for being a vital part of the multi-billion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.
During the meeting, Junaid emphasised that fisheries and dates are the key economic drivers of the region. '
Poor connectivity, security issues hinder Gwadar Port usage: PDP
Gwadar has a rich fish catch potential, and we must focus on local value addition to maximise benefits,' he said.
He pointed out that 34 fish processing units are currently operating in Balochistan, but most require technological upgrades to meet export standards. 'Transforming these units to add value through packaging and processing before exporting is critical for uplifting the sector,' he added.
The minister pointed out that Balochistan's coastline makes up 76.2% of Pakistan's total coastal length, yet its fish production significantly lags behind its actual potential.
'Balochistan has an estimated annual fish catch potential of around 300,000 tons. With proper value addition, this could generate approximately $645 million each year. However, current production is nearly half of that due to limited fishing capacity, obsolete technology, and regulatory hurdles,' he shared.
Stakeholders told to promote Gwadar trade routes
Turning to dates production, the minister stated that Panjgur and Turbat (Kech) districts together produce over 225,000 tons of dates annually—more than half of Pakistan's total. 'With value addition, the sector can generate up to $200–$205 million in revenue each year,' he said.
To support business and connectivity in the region, the minister announced steps to improve air travel. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will increase its weekly flights to Gwadar from one to three, he said.
'Two weekly flights between Gwadar and Karachi and one between Gwadar and Islamabad are under consideration.'
Furthermore, the possibility of introducing a chartered flight mechanism to facilitate travel for businesspersons and investors is also under consideration, the minister added.

StanChart sets $1.3 billion buyback as first-half profit outstrips forecasts

HONG KONG/LONDON: Standard Chartered (StanChart) reported on Thursday a higher-than-expected 26% jump in first-half pretax profit, as a strong performance in the wealth, markets and global banking businesses boosted revenue at the lender. Emerging markets-focused StanChart also announced a further $1.3 billion share buyback that it said would start imminently. The London-headquartered lender said the reported pretax profit for the first six months of this year hit $4.38 billion. That compared with $3.49 billion a year earlier and the $3.83 billion average of 15 analyst estimates compiled by the bank. Despite the strong results, StanChart kept its key performance targets largely unchanged, saying the global economy could suffer from the broader fallout of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade wars. The bank, which earns most of its revenue in Asia and Africa, slightly raised its guidance for income this year, saying it now expected growth to be at the bottom of a 5%-7% range rather than below it. StanChart's trading business, its second-biggest revenue driver, registered a 28% rise in operating income to $2.4 billion, propelled by buoyant client trading amid rising market volatility following the U.S.-initiated trade talks. Wealth management income shot up by 24% as efforts to boost fee revenue paid off with inflows and the number of new accounts rising due to demand for wealth advice amid the market volatility. The bank has said it will target $200 billion in new assets and double-digit growth in income from its wealth business over the next five years, as part of a wider strategy to shift to higher fee-earning businesses. It said 135,000 new affluent clients joined the bank in the first half of 2025, bringing in $28 billion of net new money. The lender also appeared to dodge the multi-billion dollar China-related write-downs which blighted rival HSBC's results announced on Wednesday, with StanChart reporting an impairment charge for the first half of $336 million, mainly from its wealth and retail banking unit. The bank said its exposure to Hong Kong's troubled commercial real estate sector was $2.1 billion, less than 0.5% of its total book, with provisions rising $34 million in the second quarter of the year to $116 million. The lender, however, warned that cash constraints on borrowers could lead to more impairments.

Pakistan, US strike ‘win-win' trade deal, says Aurangzeb

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Thursday termed the trade deal struck between Pakistan and the United States a 'win-win' situation for both countries. 'Today marks the culmination of the journey that we started a few months back,' said Aurangzeb in a video message released by the Ministry of Finance. The finance minister shared that the authorities on both sides had 'a very constructive final round of discussions, which then led to finalising the trade deal.' Aurangzeb heads to US to finalise trade talks The breakthrough was reached during a meeting of Pakistan's Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and United States Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. Secretary of Commerce Jawad Paul and Pakistan Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, were also present during the meeting. 'From our perspective, we were always going beyond the trade imperative,' said Aurangzeb, adding that trade and investments 'have to go hand in hand'. The finance minister lauded his economic team, including the role of the private sector, in reaching the trade deal. Aurangzeb shared that investments in various sectors were discussed. 'We will start with energy. Then there is mineral and mining, IT, and the new economy that we are talking about.' 'We are in a good place today in Pakistan, in terms of where we have arrived before August 1. We have come a long way in terms of our overall strategic partnership between Pakistan and the United States,' he said. The remarks come after US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday his administration struck a deal with Pakistan in which Washington would work with Islamabad in developing the South Asian nation's oil reserves. 'We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves,' Trump wrote on social media. 'We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they'll be selling Oil to India some day!' Pakistan faced a potential 29% tariff on exports to the United States under tariffs announced by Washington in April on countries around the world. Tariffs were subsequently suspended for 90 days so negotiations could take place. Under Trump, Washington has attempted to renegotiate trade agreements with many countries that he threatened with tariffs over what he calls unfair trade relations. Many economists dispute Trump's characterisation. US total goods trade with Pakistan was an estimated $7.3 billion in 2024, according to the website of the Office of the US Trade Representative, up from around $6.9 billion in 2023. The US goods trade deficit with Pakistan was $3 billion in 2024, a 5.2% increase over 2023.
