Ringgit opens marginally firmer vs US dollar

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the greenback on Monday amid cautious sentiment over the trajectory of the United States (US) interest rates, said an analyst.
At 8am, the local note was slightly higher at 4.2050/2260 from Friday's close of 4.2085/2155.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said expectations for a September rate cut are gaining momentum, with the US Federal Reserve anticipated to implement its first interest rate reduction of the year.
"Given that consumer spending accounted for more than two-thirds of the US economy, the case for a September rate cut is gaining more steam," he told Bernama.
The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index (CSI) fell to 58.6 points in August versus 61.7 points in the prior month. Other measures such as the Current Condition Index and the Expectation Index also declined during August.
"This suggests that consumer spending will likely weaken, while higher prices due to increased import tariffs may prevent them from splurging," he said.
Against this backdrop, the ringgit may revisit the psychological level of RM4.20 today.
The impression that the Fed might be behind the curve in cutting interest rates lower seems to weaken the US dollar in the near term. The US Dollar Index (DXY) is hovering at 97.850 points.
At the opening today, the ringgit was higher against major currencies, but depreciated vis-a-vis the euro to 4.9224/9470 from Friday's closing of 4.9185/9267.
It strengthened versus the Japanese yen to 2.8557/8701 from Friday's close of 2.8653/8702 and gained against the British pound to 5.6999/7283 from 5.7050/7145.
The ringgit also traded firmer against regional peers.
It appreciated versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2777/2944 from 3.2820/2877 at Friday's close and rose against the Thai baht to 12.9361/13.0091 from 12.9760/13.0032.
The local currency also improved against the Philippine peso to 7.36/7.41 from 7.37/7.39 previously and was almost flat against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.0/261.4 from 260.2/260.8.

Flexi Parking Honoured With Two Malaysia Book Of Records Titles

SHAH ALAM, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Flexi Parking, a smart parking payment system, has been recognised with two Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) titles. The app earned the honours for being the most widely adopted integrated smart parking application by local authorities (PBT), and for recording the highest number of daily parking payment transactions in Malaysia. Leading Innovative Technologies and System (LiTS) chief executive officer Lai Thiam Sin said since its launch in 2016, Flexi Parking has secured support from 46 PBTs nationwide, making it the largest integrated smart parking app in the country. These include 15 PBTs in Perak, 11 in Selangor, seven in Kelantan, four in Kedah, two each in Sabah, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang, and one each in Terengganu, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Putrajaya Corporation. 'Flexi Parking also set the record for the most transactions per day with 461,265 transactions on May 7, covering hourly parking, monthly passes, in-app credit top-ups, and summons or compound payments. 'Since then, the daily transaction volumes have continued to rise, reflecting strong support nationwide. These recognitions affirm Felxi Parking as a local innovation that has digitally and efficiently transformed the public parking system in Malaysia,' he said in a statement today. Lai added that the app has simplified parking payments for vehicle owners, who no longer need tickets or cash, as all transactions can be managed via smartphone. The certificates were presented by MBR representative Megat Faris Hussein Megat Muzaffar Shah to Lai at a ceremony here, witnessed by Selangor Islamic Religious Affairs and Innovation Culture Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah. -- BERNAMA

Guigang's 15th Lotus Culture Series Blooms, Driving Tourism, Smart Cultural Growth

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Guigang, Guangxi in China, has officially launched the 15th Lotus Culture Series, a multi-month celebration that blends tradition, culture, and technology to fuel the city's booming tourism sector. Running from July to October, the event will feature theatrical performances, poetry contests, and the selection of 'Top Lotus-Viewing Spots', all aimed at deepening visitor engagement and cultural pride. Endowed with exceptional ecological strengths, Guigang is building an ecotourism destination serving the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and ASEAN, with its "Three Mountains, One Gorge, One Culture" as the core. Currently, the city boasts 52 national A-level tourist attractions, 37 rural tourist areas rated four-star or above, and 17 themed tourism camps, while its brand "Camping Paradise, Carefree Guigang" is gaining increasing acclaim. According to the Publicity Department of Guigang City in a statement, Guigang welcomed over 32 million tourists in the first half of 2025, generating 30.121 billion Chinese yuan in tourism revenue, up 12.88 per cent and 13.87 per cent year on year, respectively. (100 Chinese yuan = RM58.82) To extend its reach, the city is leveraging performances and events to boost urban development, which include the Guangxi division of the "Village Basketball Association", the "Douyin Football Carnival", the "Gangren Gangye Concert", along with the hosting of the 15th National Games Basketball Qualifiers, highlighting its reputation as a "City of Sports, Capital of Leisure". The Douyin event alone earned 1.83 billion online exposures, pushing Guigang into the top three of Douyin's city search rankings. These events generated significant spikes in hotel stays and local consumption, demonstrating a clear 'event-driven, extended-stay' tourism pattern. To sustain this momentum, Guigang is stepping up its three-year intensive campaign for the cultural and tourism industry, signing 22 new projects worth 2.401 billion Chinese yuan and accelerating 42 key cultural and tourism projects in the first half of 2025. The city is also pushing forward with 'culture-tourism + AI' integration, recently launching an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered interpretation system at the Pingnan County Museum.

Malaysian MotoGP contract extension hinges on data, says Hannah Yeoh

THE extension of the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) contract at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) hinges on detailed economic data, says Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. She emphasised that the event's success must be backed by clear financial returns to justify government investment. 'The SIC must provide data proving the event boosts tourism, the economy, and job opportunities for Malaysians,' Yeoh said. She highlighted that the MotoGP generates around 4,500 temporary jobs annually but stressed the need for skill development among locals. Yeoh spoke after officiating the Jalur Gemilang handover ceremony for the national contingent to the 2025 SEA Deaf Games. Negotiations between SIC and Dorna Sports, MotoGP's rights holder, are ongoing for a contract renewal beyond 2026. Meanwhile, Yeoh expressed optimism for Malaysia's badminton squad at the upcoming World Championships in Paris. She urged players under the Road To Gold (RTG) programme to manage fatigue and avoid injuries. The RTG squad includes top pairs like Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah. Malaysia will send 80 athletes to the SEA Deaf Games in Jakarta, competing in six sports. The contingent comprises 53 athletes and 27 officials, aiming for success in futsal, athletics, and more. Indonesia, as the host, leads with 100 participants. - Bernama
