
HAL to get ₹62,000 crore order for 97 more light combat aircraft Mk-1A jets
This is the second order for LCA Mk-1As --- the IAF ordered 83 Mk-1A fighters for ₹48,000 crore in February 2021. To be sure, none of the fighters ordered four years back has been delivered yet. The IAF could get the delivery of the first of the 83 jets already ordered in October, the officials said, asking not to be named.
The LCA Mk-1As will replace the IAF's MiG-21 fighter jets. The IAF, the world's fourth largest, is set to retire the last of its iconic MiG-21 fighter jets in September, bringing the curtain down on a 62-year journey. The decommissioning ceremony will be held in Chandigarh.
The first LCA Mk-1A built at HAL's new production line in Nashik is set to make its maiden flight shortly. The state-owned plane maker is targeting to deliver the first LCA Mk-1A produced in Bengaluru to the IAF in September after a delay of around 18 months, HT has learnt.

HAL can build 16 Mk-1As every year in Bengaluru, and the Nashik production line will help it ramp production to a total of 24 jets.
The IAF is concerned about the current pace of the LCA Mk-1A programme because of the possible risks a delay in the induction of new fighters could pose to its combat effectiveness.
HAL has so far manufactured seven LCA Mk-1As to execute the 83-aircraft order. One of these, equipped with GE's F404-IN20 engine, is expected to be delivered to the IAF next month. GE Aerospace delivered the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to HAL in March, and said it will speed up further deliveries.
The US firm had then explained why the engine supply was delayed and assured HAL that production was being ramped up to execute the Indian order. In 2004, the F404-IN20 engine was selected for the older LCA Mk-1, which has been inducted by the IAF. By 2016, GE Aerospace had delivered 65 F404-IN20 engines for the Mk-1 aircraft.
With no additional engine orders, the production line for F404-IN20 in the US was shut down. However, when HAL ordered an additional 99 engines in 2021 for the LCA Mk-1A, the US firm began the complex task of restarting the production line, which had been dormant for five years, and re-engaging the engine's global supply chain.
In May, the IAF voiced its frustration over the delays in key projects.
The chief of the air staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh then put the spotlight on the armed forces' agonising wait for new weapons and systems, saying he could not recall a single instance of a project being executed on time, in what was seen as a wake-up call for the country's defence production sector.
'Timelines are a big issue,' Singh said. The air force is grappling with a shortage of fighter jets and operates around 30 fighter squadrons compared to an authorised 42.5.
Singh has often publicly flagged concerns about a worrying erosion of IAF's capabilities and called for urgent measures to fix it. In February, he questioned the ability of HAL to meet the air force's critical requirements in the backdrop of the lingering delay in the supply of new Mk-1A fighter jets, saying he had 'no confidence' in the plane maker.
HAL chief DK Sunil then responded by saying that his company's focus is on delivering the LCA Mk-1A to the IAF at the earliest rather than spending time on countering criticism of the indigenous programme.
The LCA is set to emerge as the cornerstone of IAF's combat power as it is expected to operate around 350 LCAs (Mk-1, Mk-1A and Mk-2 variants) in the coming decades.

Online Gaming Bill, 2025 : Encourages legitimate gaming & safeguards against predatory gambling
India's digital revolution in the last 11 years has transformed our country. From UPI payment system to 5G connectivity and the semiconductor ecosystem, Digital India is empowering crores under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But with these advances come new threats, especially in the online gaming industry, whose unbridled expansion has promoted addiction, financial devastation and even death. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, brought on August 20, 2025 is a bold and much-needed measure to utilize the potential of gaming while protecting society from its dangers. The timeliness of this bill cannot be overemphasized. Predatory online money gaming applications, usually based in offshore tax havens, have targeted vulnerable Indians, particularly our young, with deceptive plans and hollow promises of instant wealth. The fallout is catastrophic: A man in Bandipora lost Rs 1.5 crore, leaving his family homeless; in Mysuru, a father and two sons took their lives after devastating gaming losses. Karnataka saw 32 suicides of gamers in merely 31 months which was a public health emergency. These websites don't only hurt people; they facilitate financial fraud, money laundering and even terror financing, putting the nation's security at risk. The 2025 Bill acts upon these threats with fineness and restraint. It prohibits online money games encompassing betting, gambling, fantasy sports and lotteries with stringent punishment: 3-5 years imprisonment and Rs 1-2 crore fines for operators, advertisers and facilitators of finance. The Online Gaming Authority, vested with power under the Information Technology Act, 2000, will block unlawful sites and enforce compliance. The important point is that this is not an assault on gaming itself. The Bill is a champion of e-sports as a legitimate sport, setting up training academies and incentives, and encouraging social and educational games that promote skill-building and cultural values through the Ministries of Electronics & IT and Information & Broadcasting. This bill is a protector of India's youth, who constitute more than 65 per cent of our population. Through age verification, limiting expenditure, and grievance redressal systems, it safeguards families from the psychological as well as economic burden of addiction. Data localisation and synchronization with the Financial Intelligence Unit stamp out illicit trade, bringing digital gambling laws into line with physical-world legalities such as those in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Such provisions establish a secure digital community, technology working for people, not predators. Key provisions of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 1. Promotion and recognition of e-sports -e-sports recognised as a legitimate form of competitive sport in India. -Ministry of Sports to frame guidelines and standards for conduct of e-sports events. -Establishment of training academies, research centres, and technology platforms for advancement of e-sports. 2. Promotion of social and educational games -Central Government empowered to recognise, categorise, and register online social games. -Facilitation of platforms for development and distribution of safe, age-appropriate social and educational games. -Awareness programmes on the positive role of social games in recreation, skill-development and digital literacy. -Support for cultural and educational gaming content aligned with Indian values. 3. Prohibition of harmful online money games -Complete ban on offering, operating, or facilitating online money games, irrespective of whether based on skill, chance, or both. -Ban on advertising and promotion of money games across all forms of media. -Ban on financial transactions linked to online money games; banks and payment systems barred from processing such payments. -Empowerment to block access to unlawful gaming platforms under the Information Technology Act, 2000. 4. Establishment of an online gaming authority -Central Government to establish a national-level Authority or designate any existing Authority or Authorities or any agency for oversight. From an economic perspective, the Bill is the driving force for wholesome growth. India's gaming industry, set to expand to Rs 25,000 crore by 2028, has the potential to create more than 2 lakh jobs. By offering a transparent regulatory environment, the Bill promotes ethical investment and innovation, especially in tier II and III cities, making India a gaming export leader in the world. It's a reflection of Modi government's 'Minimum Government, Maximum Governance' ethos, with an extension of digital payments and data protection reforms to create a safe, innovation-led Digital India. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 is not policy—it's a matter of conscience to safeguard our children and ensure our country's future. In checking exploitation while fostering ingenuity, it ensures gaming as a force for good without falling prey to addiction and trap laid by gambling platforms. (File) Tejas MK1A: In a significant development that would provide a major boost to indigenous defence manufacturing, the Narendra Modi government Tuesday approved the purchase of an additional 97 Tejas Mark 1A fighter jets for Rs 62,000 crore from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to aid efforts by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in phasing out its MiG-21 fleet. Why Tejas MK1A deal is a major boost of homegrown defence tech? The approval, which will allow HAL to start manufacturing, was cleared at a high-level meeting on Tuesday, defence officials said, according to news agency ANI. Notably, this is HAL's second major order for the LCA Tejas Mark 1A fighter jets, the first being the Rs 48,000 crore order for 83 aircraft, placed a few years ago. Notably, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a vocal supporter of HAL and boosting India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. The Tejas fighter jet program, backed by the Ministry of Defence and Air Force Headquarters, is seen more than as a military upgrade, but a major push forward for the ambitious Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, that aim to make the country self-reliant in defence manufacturing. Additionally, the HAL's Tejas program will create thousands of jobs in numerous small and medium enterprises (SMEs) who are involved in manufacturing defence components across India. How powerful is Tejas MK1A fighter jet? The Tejas MK1A fighter jet is equipped with a wide array of offensive and defensive armaments, including the the indigenously-built Astra Mk1 BVR air-to-air missile with 100+ km range, the ASRAAM missile for close aerial combat, the Rudram anti-radiation missile, SAAW Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon, in addition to laser-guided bombs for precision ground strikes. The aircraft is powered by a General Electric F404-IN20 engine, which churns out 84 kN thrust, enabling the Tejas MK1A to reach a speed of up to Mach 1.8 and altitude of 52,000 feet. The warplane also has mid-air refuelling capability, which increases its flight duration and range. Tejas MK1 has a maximum takeoff weight of 13,500 kg, and is capable of carrying up to 8-9 tons of weapons.
