Arsenal transfer target's awkward Instagram post after £70m bid was rejected

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had the vision of pairing Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo in midfield, but his plans were scuppered after Brighton rejected two bids for the Ecuadorian star
Moises Caicedo previously took the unusual approach of going to Instagram to force a move away from Brighton, after having seen a bid rejected for his services from Arsenal. Prior to his British-record £115million transfer to Chelsea in the summer of 2023, the midfielder was subject to interest from Mikel Arteta's side in the January transfer window of that year.
Desperate to get his man mid-season, the Gunners boss sanctioned two bids to acquire the Ecuadorian worth £65million and £70million. But both were swiftly rejected by the Seagulls.

Despite playing less than 30 games for Brighton at the time, the then-21-year-old impressed massively as he himself made it publicly known that he was already wanting to move on from the club.

In a strange move, Caicedo took to Instagram and wrote a message directly to Brighton chairman Tony Bloom following the opening bid to first offer his gratitude to the executive then pleading for him to allow the sale to go through.
"I am grateful to Mr. Bloom and Brighton for giving me the chance to come to the Premier League and I feel I have always done my best for them," he wrote.
"I always play football with a smile and with heart. I am the youngest of ten siblings from a poor upbringing in Santa Domingo in Ecuador. My dream is always to be the most decorated player in the history of Ecuador.
"I am proud to be able to bring in a record transfer fee for Brighton which would allow them to reinvest it and help the club continue to be successful.
"The fans have taken me into their hearts and they will always be in my heart so I hope they can understand why I want to take up this magnificent opportunity."

Caicedo's poignant message ended up falling on deaf ears as Brighton remained firm and kept onto him for the rest of the season. His Instagram account 'moises_caicedo55' was also nowhere to be found on the social media platform weeks after his message but has since returned.
The season ended up being Caicedo's last at Brighton as he ended up the centre of a bidding war between Liverpool and Chelsea in the summer.

Despite the Reds having a bid of £110m accepted by the club, the midfielder had given his priority to the west London club who offered a British record of £115m – including add-ons – which was subsequently accepted.
Having just finished his second season at Stamford Bridge, Caicedo was the only Chelsea player to start all 38 Premier League games and ended the campaign by scoring in their 4-1 win over Real Betis to win the UEFA Conference League.

Aaron Ramsey agrees surprise transfer as Cardiff manager hunt thrown into chaos

The former Arsenal and Juventus star is desperate to lead Wales into battle at next year's World Cup and a move to Mexico would be the perfect way to acclimatise to the demands of next summer's tournament Aaron Ramsey has agreed a deal to sign for Pumas UNAM in Mexico - taking himself out of the race to be the next Cardiff City manager. He would become the first high-profile British player to play in the Mexican league should the formalities of the move be completed. Ramsey was appointed Cardiff interim manager for the final three games of the Championship season after the club sacked Omer Riza. But the 34-year-old was unable to prevent Cardiff from being relegated to the third tier. ‌ He had been eager to discuss the opportunity of taking the role on and combining it with playing duties and, at one point, had been heavy favourite with bookmakers. But the ex-Arsenal and Juventus star had also made it clear that he wants to continue his playing career and lead Wales at the World Cup next summer. ‌ 'There's a lot to play for and that World Cup is a massive carrot being dangled,' Ramsey said in April. According to the Press Association, Ramsey has agreed a deal to sign for Pumas - also known a Club Universidad Nacional. They finished sixth in the 2024-25 Mexican standings and qualified for the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Ramsey returned to his boyhood club Cardiff in 2023, but injuries have restricted his game time and he is currently recovering from hamstring surgery. Cardiff are continuing their quest to find a permanent replacement for Riza, having seen top target Nathan Jones agree a new long-term contract with Championship new boys Charlton Athletic. Des Buckingham, Brian Barry-Murphy and Ian Evatt have all been previously considered.

Chelsea to agree £15m transfer deal for top target over coming hours

Chelsea are set to wrap up the signing of Mike Maignan from AC Milan over the coming hours. The Blues ended their campaign on a high after winning the Europa Conference League and securing Champions League football for next season with a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League. But determined to make up ground on their rivals, Chelsea's hierarchy quickly turned their attentions to the summer transfer market, completing deals for Sporting midfielder Dario Essugo and Ipswich striker Liam Delap. Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens is expected follow the duo to Stamford Bridge in due course and the west London giants are also closing in on an agreement for Maignan, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. It's claimed the final details of the proposed deal of Maignan will be ironed out by Tuesday, with Chelsea set to shake hands on a fee of €18million (£15m) for the France international. The report states that Maignan has been saying his goodbyes to his team-mates in Milan and the 30-year-old shot-stopper will soon be a Chelsea player, 'barring any surprises'. Chelsea had floated the idea of including one of Djordje Petrovic to Kepa Arrizabalaga in the agreement but Milan had no interest, favouring a cash-only agreement. The Blues hope to have Maignan ready and available for their Club World Cup campaign, which kicks off against Los Angeles FC at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium on June 16. Maignan, who has made 163 appearances in all competitions for Milan, has just one year remaining on his current contract at the San Siro. Milan bosses have already begun scouring the market for Maignan's possible replacement, identifying Roma's Mile Svilar as their top transfer target. Enzo Maresca has been intent on bringing in a new goalkeeper after desperately poor season for Robert Sanchez, who lost his place to Filip Jorgensen midway through the 2024/25 campaign. ''Magic Mike' is his nickname because he's so exceptional,' ex-Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf told ESPN FC when asked about a proposed move for Maignan last week. More Trending 'But as much as I like him and I think he would fit perfectly to Chelsea… Chelsea have decided to give an exception in their trading business system. 'I think they should [make an exception] where you need a new Thiago Silva. 'It would be more interesting to have somebody as a centre-back. That would be my decision, but if they decide to go for Mike that's a very good decision because the guy is a really good goalkeeper. 'I know him, I appreciate him and I think he will be very useful to Chelsea.' Chelsea see sensational swap transfer offer 'rejected by Barcelona'

Both Chelsea and Barcelona are expected to be active in the summer transfer window, but the Blues have suffered a blow to their plans thanks to the La Liga champions Barcelona have rejected a sensational swap deal that would have seen their star Fermin Lopez and Chelsea's Christoper Nkunku exchange clubs. Both sides are expected to be active in this summer's transfer window and are looking to strengthen ahead of next season. Barca will be looking to defend their La Liga and Copa del Rey titles, while Chelsea will be hoping to build on their qualification for the Champions League. ‌ Nkunku has struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge since his arrival in 2023. The Blues paid RB Leipzig a fee of £52million to sign the Frenchman, but his debut campaign was severly disrupted by injury. This term he has fallen behind Nicolas Jackson in the pecking order, starting just nine Premier League games. ‌ Nkunku had built a reputation for being one of Europe's most promising attackers during his time with Leipzig. His standing has taken a knock since he moved to London though, with Chelsea having added Liam Delap to their squad already this summer. With Delap arriving for £30m from Ipswich, the Blues are ready to see Nkunku depart. Despite him having four years to run on his contract, Chelsea chiefs are shopping the attacker around to rival clubs. According to Mundo Deportivo, one of those clubs was Barca. It is said that Chelsea proposed a swap deal, with Nkunku and Lopez exchanging clubs, as Blues boss Enzo Maresca is a big fan of the attacking midfielder. While Barca are keen to add a striker to their squad this summer, the La Liga champions 'flatly rejected' the offer. Both club president Joan Laporta and manager Hansi Flick are in agreement on that decision. Lopez has been something of a perfect 12th man for Barca under Flick, appearing in 46 matches albeit mostly as a substitute in their biggest games, scoring eight goals and notching eight assists as they won the Spanish double. Flick is also not a fan of Nkunku so was happy to reject the deal. ‌ In fact, Barca would only be open to selling Lopez if the player himself requests a transfer. That is a situation that the club are prepared for, with the midfielder hoping for a place in Spain's squad for next summer's World Cup. But with Frenkie de Jong, Dani Olmo, Gavi, Pedri and Raphinha ahead of him in the pecking order, he may well need to move on. Former Chelsea star John-Obi Mikel has urged the Blues to part with Nkunku. He told GiveMeSport: 'Injuries haven't helped and you can see he doesn't like being played out of position. He's not a striker, he's a number ten. But of course, when you have [Cole] Palmer in that position, you can't just take him out the side. 'It's time to sell Nkunku, get some money and then invest in a wide attacker. I am not so sure replacing Nkunku with another striker is wise because it's not good to have three established strikers all fighting for one position.'
